Volker Havlik (1956–2024)
Somewhere in the southernmost outskirts of Hamburg, there was Volker’s post-krautrock / post-punk / post-industrial sonic laboratory.
His guitar would never go naked; it was always draped in a cloud of wires, little boxes, toys and spikey things.
Volker had way more ideas than a 24-hour day could suffice for… which didn’t always make it easy for him to link up to other people, especially since his pace at doing and organizing things on the practical side was excessively laidback.
In the late 1990s, he found two perfect spots for socializing and exchanging, in the parallel society of laidback sonic hyperactivity … the legendary Hörbar in St. Pauli and the tiny Matrix in Eimsbüttel.
The latter (no, the name was NOT inspired by some film that came out in 1999) was a lovely cosy-messy little rabbithole in the space-time continuum and hasn’t been in existence for very long, but hosted some of the most remarkable intimate micro-happenings that a world yet without touchscreens could come up with.
Berlin, you might still be cool and inspiring to some extent, but you never had no Matrix like this.
It was here that Volker met two young inspiration-seekers from beyond the northernmost outskirts, obscurity aspirants from the tidal wetlands carrying rucksacks full of wires, toys and spikey things. One of them had a 75kg Ensoniq sampler in his tiny car’s trunk, the other one had a bass clarinet and a ghetto blaster in his bicycle basket and the latest hot s**t in the digital audio world: a portable minidisc recorder.
The three had an orange juice together and decided to lock themselves in at the post-everything laboratory for one and a half years, not really expecting that the internet would ever become a big thing in which ‚new’ musical genres and sub-genres and hybrid-sub-sub-genres would be framed and labelled, out of long-existing amorphous experiments that shy away from daylight, and especially from vanity and compulsive self-exposure.
The music project Fluxtrat was probably too early for the world, maybe by a couple of months.
It was obviously too late to ride the Fluxus wave. It took place in the eternal interzone.
Volker never departed from that name, Fluxtrat, when he moved on with ideas that could fill up 24 lifetimes.
He had exactly one, and in this lifetime there were remarkable micro-happenings that fully grabbed people’s attention … and that didn’t include any touchscreens.
What more to ask for.

Irgendwo in den südlichsten Randgebieten Hamburgs befand sich Volkers Post-Krautrock- / Post-Punk- / Post-Industrial-Sound-Laboratorium.
Seine Gitarre zeigte sich niemals n***t; sie war stets in eine Wolke aus Kabeln und Drähten, kleinen schachtelförmigen Geräten und Spielzeugen, kantigen und dornigen Dingen gehüllt.
Volker hatte bei weitem mehr Ideen als jemals in einem 24-stündigen Tag umsetzbar gewesen wären, und das machte es nicht immer einfach, sich mit anderen Menschen zu verknüpfen … zumal sein Tempo in der praktischen Umsetzung und im Organisatorischen exzessiv entspannt war.
In den späten 1990ern fand er zwei perfekt geeignete Orte für Austausch und Socializing, in der Parallelgesellschaft der relaxten Klang-Hyperaktiven. Zum einen war das die legendäre Hörbar in St. Pauli, zum anderen das kleine feine Matrix in Eimsbüttel.
Letzteres (nein, die Namensgebung war NICHT von einem gewissen 1999 veröffentlichten Kinofilm inspiriert) war ein zutiefst sympathisches, gemütlich-rümpeliges Kaninchenloch im Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum und hat leider nicht sehr lang existiert… es fanden dort jedoch, in intimer Atmosphäre, einige der eindrucksvollsten Mikro-Happenings statt die in einer Welt ohne Touchscreens denkbar waren.
Berlin, du magst immer noch cool sein und in einem gewissen Maße inspirierend, aber du hattest niemals ein Matrix wie dieses.
Dies war der Ort, an dem Volker zwei junge Inspirationssuchende von jenseits der nördlichsten Randgebiete traf, zwei Obskuritäts-Aspiranten aus den Marschland-Feuchtgebieten, mit Rucksäcken voller Kabel, Drähte und kantiger dorniger Dinge. Einer von ihnen hatte einen 75kg schweren Ensoniq-Sampler im Kofferraum seines Kleinwagens, der andere hatte einen Bassklarinettenkoffer und einen Ghettoblaster in seinem Fahrradkorb sowie den neuesten Heißen Scheiß aus der Digital-Audio-Welt: einen tragbaren Minidisc-Recorder.
Die drei hatten einen gemeinsamen Orangensaft und trafen die Verabredung, sich zusammen für eineinhalb Jahre im Post-Everything-Laboratorium einzusperren. Sie hatten keinerlei Erwartung, dass das Internet das nächste große Ding werden würde, das ‚neue‘ musikalische Genres und Subgenres und Hybrid-Sub-Subgenres ausrufen und etikettieren würde – aus dem Fundus der seit langem existierenden amorphen Experimente die stets vor dem Tageslicht zurückscheuen… und vor allem vor Eitelkeit und zwanghafter Selbstdarstellung.
Das Musikprojekt Fluxtrat kam wahrscheinlich zu früh für diese Welt, vielleicht nur um einige Monate.
Offensichtlich kam es zu spät, um auf der Fluxus-Welle mitzuschwimmen. Es fand in der ewigen überzeitlichen Zwischenzone statt.
Volker hat sich nie von dem Namen Fluxtrat verabschiedet, während der Jahre in denen er weiteren Ideen nachging, Ideen die 24 Leben hätten ausfüllen können.
Er hatte genau eins, und in jenem Leben gab es eindrucksvolle Mikro-Happenings die die Aufmerksamkeit der Anwesenden für einige Momente fesselte. Ohne dass irgendwelche Touchscreens im Spiel waren.
Was bliebe da noch zu wünschen übrig.
