Champloo is the first single to be lifted from the debut EP by Leon Raum, and one that found its source of inspiration from Japanese anime series Samurai Champloo, as well as its theme tune performed by Japanese producer Nujabes. Insistent piano stabs and swinging drums build tension throughout the track as Leon explains:
“I was watching a lot of Samurai Champloo, and I visualised a hectic yet collected sword fight scene while making this. ”

To See You Again is the new single by Jono McCleery and it was written just days before the death of his pianist brother, Stephen.
“I spontaneously sang it with my daughter before putting her to bed and it felt like a prayer for him to let go. I recorded it on my phone as a demo and later asked Matt Kelly & Fybe to expand the sound. The three of us had worked together before on my first album with Ninja Tune, and this felt like a great time to reunite”

RAH & The Ruffcats new album "Orile to Berlin" is an album steeped in Afrobeat and Highlife but with funk sensibilities and a hip hop attitude. Produced by Jochen Ströh, producer for Ebo Taylor and mixing engineer for Pat Thomas and Kwashibu Area Band, it has a strong production pedigree. It represents the band’s own version of Afrobeat within the unwritten laws of this music.

The final single to be taken from Lovexpress77 is the laid back yet club friendly Arzu. It’s another track that conjures up the atmosphere of TTeo’s sultry southern Italian home, combining sprightly pianos with warm electronics and rhythmic
percussion - the latter coming directly from a conga solo from his father during a live Lovexpress show.
The piano was recorded on TTeo’s iPhone 📱, capturing that moment in a very natural and simple way, as he explains, “sometimes things just happen.. It’s easy.” And in this almost effortless fashion, brings samples from today and half a century ago together - introducing his father’s original club sounds to a whole new audience.

We would like to wish a HUGE Happy 20th Anniversary to !
There’s so much we could say but nothing could have more meaning than words of the man himself:
Can’t hold back - my first album - turns ✨20✨ today.
20 years is a long time and it actually feels like a long time. In 2003 there were CDs, music magazines printed on paper, no streaming, no smartphones, no social media.
To me, releasing an album felt like a privilege, the epitome of musicianship plus like a personal bucket list achievement. It was a lot of work & back then I needed the help of a lot of people to make it happen.
Just before the album came out I had my (usual) doubts here & there but generally felt good to go. Critics in magazines, especially the US, were positive, my first three singles „When I’m With You“, „(I got) Somebody New“ & „In Your Car“ did well in the club scene. I was even in Japan with & on its release day for interviews. BUT…. it sold rather poorly.
There were a lot of reasons I guess.. people in my musical bubble expecting a dance album, the music industry in free fall, very little gigs & very little gig experience, me naively thinking that the songs alone would do the trick, that promo person in charge of Germany who seemed to actively hate it, the in-between style of the music itself (it was filed under "Soul", "Electro", "Pop" and even "Techno")… lots of reasons. Suddenly everything felt too much to handle & I couldn’t listen to it for a long time. I focussed on things that were lying ahead & tried to forget about it.
However, over the many years I have noticed that there actually were people from different walks of life who connected with it .. some saying that it was some kind of soundtrack for them at the time & that it is still important to them today. And I am more than grateful for that.
I am also grateful for all the producers, label people, musicians & friends involved (& that all of them are still alive ... & active!)
Today’s show is dedicated to the love for DISCO, BOOGIE and HOUSE music. We’re broadcasting live from the Sonar Kollektiv office from 11h-13h, to Twitch & YouTube.
Leading up to our LOVEDANCIN‘ X THE SPACE IN BETWEEN party going down at OXI on Monday, Oct 2nd, we’ve invited of kickin_updust & .tone of and they’ll be dropping a mix of freshies and classics including some special goodies from the party’s lineup , , and
Tune in and then come party with us on Monday!

Our Story
Sonar Kollektiv was founded in 1997 by Jazzanova. Designed as a platform for own releases it soon attracted numerous new discoveries and like-minded musicians to lead their trumps right here. Still it was never the intention of Sonar Kollektiv to pursue one specific sound or provide an already existing scene. Each and every release on the label (250 and counting) was at all times meant to illustrate the musical taste of the collective, its flavourful development and recollection of past sounds. The various compilations and label showcases played a big part of it. From the renowed „Secret Love“ compilation (No. 6 will be released these days), the „Computer Incarnations For World Peace“ edition, the „...Boadcasting“ and „....Mixing“-series to the „Romanian Jazz“ label showcase Sonar Kollektiv continuously cares about broadening its own and the horizon of any type of music lovers. How broad this horizon can be expanded showed the release of Âme’s „Rej“ in 2005. Shorthandly minimal techno was redifined and at the same time the sublabel Innervisions (runned by Dixon) was leveraged to worldwide fame. Other milestones in the eventful history of Sonar Kolletiv were the discovery of the New Zealand reggae soul combo Fat Freddy’s Drop (2005), the debuts by Micatone (2003), Benny Sings (2005), Clara Hill (2003) and Eva Be (2004), the first releases by Dimlite (2003), Tricksi (2006), Christian Prommer’s Drumlesson (2007), as well as Georg Levin (2005) and his collaborative project with Dixon, Wahoo (2004). Also for some of today’s legends of more sophisticated electronic music, like Ulrich Schnauss, Ben Klock and Marcin Kozlowski (now a member of Whitest Boy Alive) Sonar Kollektiv offered a stepping stone to their international careers. And in 2003 a certain Eric Wahlforss released his first record here, just before founding Soundcloud.
When at the end of 2009 the rate of fire ceased some thought the label is running on empty or lost touch to contemporary sounds. But the releases of this year so far should prove doubters wrong. The remix album „Jazzanova Upside Down“ (released in January) gathers the who’s who of the currenty most happening and game-changing DJs and producers (Henrik Schwarz, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Filippo Moscatello, Manuel Tur, Mark E, and more) to catapult Jazzanova classics into the future. By signing Phil Gerus from Moscow, the new project Hot Coins out of the UK, EnaWadan from South Africa and the pan-Geman duo Paskal & Urban Absolutes four of the most promising new acts slantingly offside the dancefloor have been added to the already impressive roster. And once again all true pop aficionados with an addiction for soul and a genuine craft in songwriting are pierced to the heart with the brand new albums by FETSUM („The Colors Of Hope“) and Micatone („Wish I Was Here“).
But what is the formula of success of the Berlin based label? A dance music imprint that – with a few exceptions – actually doesn’t release club music? Is it even after all exactly this? Delievering music for prior to, succeeding and one day after a club night?
There’s no other German record label that can boast such an adventurous range of styles: reggae, folk, electronica, jazz, funk, calypso, house, techno and now also chillwave, dubstep, dream pop, and so on. At Sonar Kollektiv there’s somehow room for everything. Still, all of the 250 and counting releases have one common denominator: It’s music made out of passion - from and for music lovers.
