Let's celebrate 2024 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and THE LEGEND OF ZELDA! Video game music is a genre in its own right. With its own laws, its own composers. In any case, it's music that's influenced by the great film soundtracks, and before that by composers such as Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss. Majestic, opulent, colorful! And it's music with its own fans, some of whom are willing to travel a long way to hear it, and who celebrate their musical heroes like Star Wars fans celebrate Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda or Princess Leia. Our heroine today is ZELDA! This legendarily successful series of games from Nintendo not only impresses with its stories, but also with its particularly beautiful compositions by Manaka Kataoka, Yasuaki Iwata and Hajime Wakai. The game's music weave a rich tapestry of exploration, melody and a touch of classic "hey, listen!". It's like creating a musical opus with every swing of the sword and every note of the iconic themes.

I've arranged and orchestrated some of the most beautiful themes for the BBC Symphony Orchestra. What you hear is the mockup I created in Logic Pro and performed with Spitfire Audio's BBCSO Pro library.

Yesterday we attended a fantastic concert by the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn (BOB) conducted by Dirk Kaftan. Mozart's Jupiter Symphony (Symphony No. 41 in C major, KV 551) was played.

This evening was the last (for the time being) in the "Pur" format, in which before the concert Kaftan and co-presenter Tilmann Böttcher related the Viennese period and Mozart's life to the work and also drew parallels to Beethoven's later works. The orchestra played the appropriate musical excerpts. An insightful and enjoyable evening!

Eine erfolgreiche Premiere unserer Pilotepisode „HEIMAT SAARLAND“ mit dem Titel „UNSERE KINOGESCHICHTEN“ fand am 25. März in Saarbrücken in der Camera Zwo statt. Wir konnten uns über ein volles Haus und jede Menge positives Feedback und interessante Gespräche freuen. Wir danken allen Beteiligten. Ganz besonders unseren Unterstützern und Gesprächspartner:innen, ohne deren Geschichten diese Dokumentation nicht möglich gewesen wäre.

Eine wunderbare Doku mit viel Charme und Leidenschaft für die Magie des Kinos! Es war mir eine große Freude, die Musik hierfür schreiben zu dürfen.

„HEIMAT SAARLAND – UNSERE KINOGESCHICHTEN“ stellt die erste Episode einer geplanten Reihe dar, die sich intensiv mit der saarländischen Vergangenheit und der resultierten Gegenwart auseinandersetzt. Während der Spurensuche haben wir festgestellt, dass es vor allem die Geschichten jener Zeitzeuginnen und Zeitzeugen sind, die bewahrt werden müssen.

I did it again... And even though I've done it a few times before... it's always exciting to participate in a film composing contest!

The score for this action-packed short film is set up as a hybrid composition that is clearly meant to feel a bit retro with its synth sounds. The main theme at the beginning and end of the film clip is laid out plain and bold - in keeping with this steam punkish style of the spaceship and its pilot. It consists of just the first three notes of C minor in descending order: E-flat, D and C. Of course, there's some counterpoint (woodwind, brass). Harmonically we have (a little enriched) Cm, B-flat and F in some repetitions before it ends pathetically on A-flat. With fragments and variations of this theme, string ostinati, as well as the woodwinds and brass in the middle section, are busy using orchestral devices to build the tension arcs. Again supported by snyth sounds. Another additive between the existing sound design and the score are some supplementary sound elements, such as the sounds of the scene transitions in space (1:16 - 1:22), as well as the ticking clock at the beginning and end of the clip - as an allusion to the film title.

I hope the jury and all viewers enjoy my score as much as I enjoyed composing it.

I wish all my fellow composers an interesting and stimulating competition. I will now - after my submission - enjoy looking at the contributions of the others.
