We are looking for both bachelor and master students from all majors, especially biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science. Previous experience is appreciated, but we also welcome first-year students and can’t wait to open the door of the biotechnological world for you. Besides, we would like to have new members who are interested in website building, graphic design, and social outreach as well.

This year’s project will focus on the extraction of lanthanides, 15 elements with similar properties.
Okay, we admit, that does sound very chemical (or perhaps geological) and it does migrate into those fields. However, we’re gonna explain more on the biotechnical aspects of our project very soon.
First though, we’d like to introduce you to the application of lanthanides. Or to put it a little differently, why are we even interested in lanthanides in the first place?
Everyone knows metals like copper or aluminium as they fulfill crucial functions in our everyday life. Lanthanides however are widely unknown, as they are usually used in very small concentrations. That does not make them less crucial though: lanthanides are an essential component to almost every part of our smartphones – be it the screen, the speakers or the battery. They are used as catalysts to create f.e. gasoline from crude oil and serve as heat sources in satellites and space probes. They absorb neutrons in nuclear power reactors and are often found in alloys, because they make steel easier to process. Lanthanides are also used in medicine, for example as a contrast medium in MRI examinations or in cancer therapy.
By now it is safe to say that though very few people know about lanthanides, almost all of us are largely dependent on them. Have you heard of lanthanides before? Let us know in the comments.
