The third issue of e-flux Index is now available in print and for digital download. 540 pages long, this volume includes contributions from 76 authors, artists, architects, filmmakers, poets, and theorists from many parts of the world. Ulysses Carríon once declared that “In the new art every book requires a different reading”—an attitude which the Index here adopts in its approach to contemporary culture.

Ranging from short articles and reviews of exhibitions, books, and films, to extensive interviews, long-form essays, and new theoretical vernaculars, the new kaleidoscopic issue of e-flux Index reflects in eleven chapters on topics ranging from the technology of remembering in a forgetful era, to the saturation of contemporary imagery and the current state of photography, moving image, and appropriation art. In fast-changing times, Index 3 also responds to the current climate of cultural censorship over Palestine, and explores the fault-line between diversity and homogenization—from global food monocultures to architectural uniformity.

In two stand-alone chapters, the issue presents the first English translations of feminist writings from the 2022 Jina Uprising in Iran, and elsewhere explores the metabolic rifts of the climate crisis, from the curious origins of autotune in Exxon oil extraction to speculative essays on post-fossil fuel architecture. Index 3 also focuses on the role of notation in musical scores and performance scripts, eventually ending with a section that turns everything inside out to consider the potential for code-switching and the subversion of binaries in art and life.

Published five times a year, e-flux Index recomposes content commissioned across e-flux’s Journal, Architecture, Criticism, Education, and Notes platforms, organizing texts thematically to draw out today’s most vital strains of inquiry.

e-flux Index is available to purchase at e-flux Shop and in select bookstores worldwide. It is distributed by (Canada), (USA), (UK, Europe), (Europe), (East Asia), and (Germany, Austria).

In this extensive historical and contemporary analysis of shame and its power, artist Andrea Büttner probes the definitions and representations of shame. ‘Shame’ (Koenig Books, 2023) includes close readings of Sigmund Freud’ writings on play and fantasy, challenges theoretical approaches to Andy Warhol’s q***r performativity on film, and frames Dieter Roth’s representations of shame in his writing and moving image work.

Allana Clarke’s first monograph An Infinitive Breath has recently been published and offers a comprehensive insight into the artist’s work to date. The book traces her practice, which moves fluidly between sculptural and text-based approaches as well as photography, video and performance. An interview between and as well as essays by and explore some of the central themes in Clarke’s work.

“When people encounter a body, they immediately try to deconstruct it and make connections to things they already know or think they understand. They immediately reduce it because the way we understand bodies in the world is very reductive: we judge them by race, class, gender; we make all kinds of associations, it’s an automatic process. My works with hair bonding glue counteract these associations: they are bodies. They have weight. They have gestures and movement.“ — Allana Clarke

Allana Clarke: An Infinitive Breath is edited by Thomas Zander and published by , Cologne.

ANNA JERMOLAEWA - BIENNALE VENEDIG, ÖSTERREICHISCHER PAVILLON
Catalogue ed. by Gabriele Spindler. Venice 2024. Contrib. by Aleida Assmann, Boris Groys & Gabriele Spindler. 16 x 23 cm. 224 pp. with 182 (170 farb.) mostly coloured mostly full- our double-page ill., softcover – Text in German & English.

The artist Anna Jermolaewa, who fled from Russia to Austria, still has a bone to pick with Putin. In 1989, the KGB had her studio flat in St Petersburg, where he was working at the time, searched - she never saw the confiscated works again. It was the year of her first invitation to the Biennale. „I resent that personally,“ she told an interviewer on the occasion of her return to Venice. For us, her Austrian pavilion is one of the great discoveries. The generously presented catalogue celebrates her multifaceted conceptual art. The art philosopher Boris Groys diagnoses the precipitation of „political radiation“ in her works.

MARTIN WONG: MALICIOUS MISCHIEFS - MADRID, MUSEO CA2M CENTRO DE ARTE DOS DE MAYO - Catalogue ed. by Krist Gruijthuijsen & Agustín Pérez Rubio. Madrid/Berlin u.a.O. 2022/23

Martin Wong is recognized for his depictions of social, sexual, and political scenographies from the American 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Poetically weaving together narratives of q***r existence, marginal communities, and urban gentrification, Wong stands out as an important countercultural voice at odds with the art establishment's reactionary discourse at the time. Heavily influenced by the artist's immediate surroundings, Wong's practice merges the visual languages of Chinese iconography, urban poetry, graffiti, carceral aesthetics, and sign language. His work offers a valuable insight into decisive periods of recent American history.

CY TWOMBLY – INSCRIPTIONS

2.280 pages with more than 1.000 coloured illustrations in six cloth-covered volumes in slipcase

Itemn-No.: 1624218 subscription price € 998,--
as of November 1st 2022 € 1.298,--

From 1953 onwards, Cy Twombly (1928-2011) began to add texts and literary quotations from poets from antiquity to the present day to around 40% of his paintings, including Sappho, Praxilla, Rumi, Keats, Rilke, Abbas ibn al-Ahnaf, Bachmann and others.

In five volumes - catalogue raisonné - all 901 works annotated are illustrated. Each inscription is transcribed and cited with the literary source in the variant translation used by the artist.
Additional diagrams explain the often difficult identification of the quotations. In fact, the author succeeds in attributing all 901 works to 109 authors.

The catalogue raisonné is supplemented by a monographic sixth volume, "A Collaboration of Image and Words".

It has been known for years that the author, a habilitated art historian and staff member at the International College Morphomata at the University of Cologne, is working on this unusually interesting reference work. The edition will be delivered at the end of October 2022.

Please send your order for subscription to [email protected].

The Golden Book of Words. Diese Briefe, die die Welten der Konzeptkunst, des Postminimalismus, des Feminismus, der New York School, der Sprachpoesie und mehr vereint, verdeutlichen die Bande der Schwesternschaft durch einen intimen Austausch über Kunst, Beziehungen und das tägliche Leben.

Tsukioka Yosh*toshi (1839–1892) was the last great woodblock print master of the Ukiyo-e tradition. With his distinctive style of dramatic lines and use of gorgeous colours, Yosh*toshi was soon recognised by his contemporaries as the most outstanding woodblock artist of his time. 𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘏𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘈𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯 is regarded as his greatest achievement. The series brings to life the history and mythology of ancient Japan. In all 100 prints the moon figures prominently, either clearly visible in the design itself, or else referred to in the beautiful poem in the text cartouche.

The subjects of the prints range from historical figures such as the novelist and court lady Murasaki Shikibu from the Heian period (794–1185) and samurai warlords like Takeda Shingen (1521–1573) to mythological creatures and scenes related to the Japanese theatre forms kabuki, no and kyogen. The series not only strongly refers to Japanese literature and culture, it also includes many references to the literary traditions of China, which were of major influence on the cultural developments of classical Japan.
