Industrial or cosy? Why choose when you can have both?
In this unique interior design, industrial elements merge with cosy details to create a harmonious whole. Exposed concrete walls are complemented by cosy rugs, soft cushions and stylish decorations, creating an exciting and versatile ambience. Plants and natural materials bring freshness and vibrancy to the space, while carefully selected artwork and accessories add a personal touch.

This fusion of styles demonstrates that opposites not only attract, but can also complement each other perfectly. The result is an innovative and comfortable living space that combines the best of both worlds, providing an ideal environment for creative work and relaxed living. 🌿🏡

Red is one of the strongest signal and warning colours. It symbolises confidence, strength, vitality, activity, dynamism and passion. It is the colour of life and love, but also of rivalry, anger and aggression. 🔴

It is no coincidence that many prohibition signs are red. The colour stands out and makes a statement. Even in furniture and interior design. If you want to draw attention to certain objects, choose red. Red elements create an emotional connection to the living space.

Oak wood is versatile due to its many positive characteristics:
It is hard, tough and weather resistant. It has a regular grain and is grey to light brown, darkening with time. The distinction between hard and soft oak is based on the growth rings, which give the wood a different weight and workability. 🪵

Oak is dried slowly and carefully to avoid cracking and discolouration, and is easy to work and maintain. It is commonly used for veneer, flooring, wall panelling, doors, windows, framing, stairs and furniture. Its weather resistance makes white oak particularly suitable for outdoor and hydraulic engineering applications. Oak is also used to make the barrels that add flavour to wine, cognac and whisky. 🍷

Special designations such as beam oak, knotty oak or wild oak refer to the appearance and growth characteristics of the wood, not to specific oak species. Bog oak, which has spent centuries in bogs, is particularly hard and sought after for high quality furniture. 🌳

What is your favourite wood?

Orange represents youth, energy and joie de vivre. Even warmer than yellow, it represents a thirst for adventure, optimism and sociability. 🟠

It can even help with loss of appetite or depression. It is therefore particularly suitable for the dining room or other rooms where people spend a lot of time. Orange is also an extravagant colour. It is often used by extroverts as a highlight in interiors. 🪄

Furniture glass is a widely used material for bringing light, elegance and communication into the home. For this reason, there are different types of furniture glass.🪟

Starting with glass for interior doors, there are transparent glass doors on the market that meet the requirements of brightness, or frosted glass doors that allow a more opaque opacity that meets the requirements of privacy in the environments where they are used.

In addition to the various types of architectural glass, there is also glass for partitions. Glass partitions are characterised by their modern aesthetics and their great thickness, making it possible to separate two spaces while maximising the amount of light entering and increasing the width of the visible spaces. 🪞

Glass, in particular, is a material that, from an aesthetic point of view, conveys a sense of lightness and delicacy, without sacrificing solidity, and at the same time has high material resistance.

Yellow represents warmth and good humour. Associated with the sun, this colour helps to create a developing, open and freeing atmosphere. Yellow is ideal against depressive moods and can even increase the ability to concentrate, making it particularly suitable for rooms where a lot of time is spent, such as the office. As a particularly lively colour, it is seen as fun, playful and cheerful. 🌞

It is very difficult to feel comfortable in a room if the light is not right. Paper lamps are particularly good at creating a pleasant atmosphere. The solution is so simple because it has been around in Japan for centuries. 💡

The versatility of the paper lamp makes it an ideal choice for a wide range of interior styles - whether minimalist, Scandinavian or boho. They create not only a harmonious light, but also an optical lightness that makes the room seem larger and airier. 🌬️

Woven upholstery fabrics often have a certain elegance about them. Experts distinguish between flat woven fabrics and pile fabrics. 🧵

1️⃣ Flat woven fabrics consist of two sets of threads, the warp and the weft, which cross at right angles. There are two types: dobby and jacquard, which differ in the way they are made and the patterns they can produce. Dobby weaves produce plain or small patterned fabrics as well as stripes, diagonal patterns and checks.

2️⃣ In addition to the basic warp and weft thread systems, pile fabrics have a third thread system that forms the pile. They are available with cut pile loops (e.g. velvet and velour) and closed loops (e.g. epinglé). Due to their construction, pile fabrics are more resistant to abrasion than flat fabrics, as the vertically integrated pile yarns protect the base fabric and can withstand wear and tear.

➡️ Which fabric would you choose for which piece of furniture? Let us know in the comments.

In colour psychology, blue is the colour of the sea and the sky. It symbolises both depth and vastness. Blue stands for well-being and truth, seriousness, honesty and creativity. It is the most popular colour in the world - for all genders. Because many people associate it with loyalty, reliability, empathy and trust, it is often used in marketing and corporate logos. However, depending on the shade, blue can also be cool and aloof. 🔵

➡️ What do you think of the colour in interior design? Yes or no?

🤓 A little deep dive into cork:

Cork is a natural material derived from the bark of the cork oak tree. Cork oaks are not cut down to obtain cork. Instead, the bark is harvested, which does not harm the tree and allows it to continue growing. This makes cork a renewable and environmentally friendly material.

The advantages of using cork for furniture are numerous:

➡️ Lightness: Cork is very light, which makes it easier to transport and handle.

➡️ Elasticity and flexibility: Cork can be compressed and then return to its original shape. This characteristic makes it resistant to pressure and wear. Due to its elasticity, cork offers a pleasant sitting comfort and can adapt to the contours of the body, which is particularly advantageous for chairs and seating furniture.

➡️ Insulating properties: Cork has excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties, making it ideal for use in the home.

➡️ Variance: Cork can be processed in different shapes and sizes, offering a wide range of design possibilities, from minimalist to complex structures. Cork has a warm, natural texture and color that can be integrated into many home styles, creating a natural, organic look.

Are you a fan of cork? Let us know in the comments!

Comfortable seating invites you to enjoy longer, more relaxed meals where you can feel at ease and enjoy the company of others. A comfortable dining area encourages longer conversations and companionship and can have a big impact on social life. 🛋️

Lower seating positions not only offer more comfort, but also create a more harmonious overall look in open plan living spaces by blending in with the overall design of the living room.

Organic, flowing shapes that convey a sense of comfort and warmth: this soft aesthetic can be found in various areas of design, be it furniture, lighting, accessories or even architecture.

Rounded contours, gentle curves and sweeping lines have replaced strict geometries. These designs create an atmosphere of relaxation and comfort. 🧘✨

At imm cologne 2024, it also became clear that soft shapes allow for a greater variety of materials and textures. Fabrics, upholstery and organic materials such as wood and stone are particularly effective in these designs, giving them an additional sensuality and tactility.

In our last article on the psychology of architecture, we looked at the effect that colours, shapes, textures and light have on our emotions. But what exactly does architecture and interior design do to people?

In addition to emotions, these aspects also determine our physical well-being. A well-designed environment can help us stay healthy and productive. Adequate natural light, good ventilation, green plants and calming colours are just some of the things that can help.

The size and type of space can also affect a person's productivity. For example, architecturally designed spaces can increase concentration and creativity and reduce stress and distraction.

In everyday life, this means that green plants in the workplace can have a positive effect on employees' concentration, productivity and well-being. At home, living spaces with large windows and plenty of light - preferably overlooking a green space - promote psychological well-being.

Have you considered architectural psychology in the design of your offices and private spaces?

Although everyone is different and has their own personal perception, there are aspects of life that cultural and geographical groups have in common: it is the agreement in the perception of architectural factors.

But what does that mean? It means, for example, that colours are perceived in the same way all over the world: Red is associated with love and yellow with joy - on all six continents. This is the result of a study carried out in 2020 with people from 30 nations.

Architectural psychology picks up on this phenomenon and says that certain colours, shapes, textures and light have a uniform emotional effect on most people. This has important implications for effective architectural design.

To find out which components trigger which emotions, take a look at our slides. New build vs. remodelling

Refurbishment is particularly worthwhile from an environmental point of view. During and after refurbishment, everyone involved in the value chain can contribute to the circular economy. This also applies to the furniture industry. Old objects, construction waste or leftover building materials can often be reused for housing.

Did you know that?

🏠 New buildings consume a lot of grey energy (energy used in construction, manufacturing, transport, storage and disposal).
🏚️ Refurbishment and energy efficiency upgrades are often more cost effective. Demolishing and rebuilding houses in Germany is only worthwhile for around twelve per cent of houses.

Read more about circular construction in our magazine article:
