Wilhelm Lehmbruck und Joseph Beuys sind überzeugt, dass Kunst die Kraft hat, die Welt zu erklären und zu verändern: »Skulptur ist das Wesen der Dinge, das Wesen der Natur, das, was ewig menschlich ist.« Diese Einsicht Lehmbrucks nimmt Beuys zum Ausgangspunkt seiner Sozialen Plastik. Das plastische Gestalten - das Kunst Machen - bezieht sich nicht mehr nur auf das Formen von Material, sondern auf das Formen von Ideen, auf das Formen des sozialen Gefüges in seiner Gesamtheit. Unter dem Leitspruch »Alles ist Skulptur« widmet sich die Ausstellung der besonderen Beziehung zweier der bedeutendsten deutschen Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Wilhelm Lehmbruck and Joseph Beuys are convinced, that art holds the power to explain and change the world: "Sculpture is the essence of things, the essence of nature, that which is eternally human." This insight of Lehmbruck becomes the basis of Beuys' Social Sculpture. Sculptural modeling - the making of art - no longer refers to the forming of materials, but the forming of ideas, the forming of the social framework as a whole. Under the motto "Everything is Sculpture" the exhibition focuses on the special relation between two of the most important German artists of the 20th century.

Die Unsichtbare Skulptur
Zeche Zollverein / Ruhr Museum
Die Ausstellung fokussiert die gesellschaftspolitische Dimension in der Arbeit von Joseph Beuys und diskutiert deren Bedeutung für Gegenwart und Zukunft. Dafür werden unveröffentlichte Materialien und zentrale Werke des visionären Künstlers gezeigt. Beuys‘ Engagement für Demokratie und Ökologie war zukunftsweisend und hat die internationale Vorstellung von Kunst neu definiert. Im Rahmen aktueller Diskussionen um gesellschaftliches Zusammenleben und das Verhältnis des Menschen zur Natur, wirft die Ausstellung einen neuen Blick auf sein Werk. Darüber hinaus wird Beuys Verbindung zum Ruhrgebiet vor allem im Rahmen der Gründung der beiden Zweigstellen seiner Freien Internationalen Universität in Gelsenkirchen und Essen beleuchtet.

Invisible Sculpture

The exhibition focuses on the socio-political dimension in the work of Joseph Beuys and discusses its significance for the present and the future. To this end, unpublished materials and key works by the visionary artist will be on display. Beuys' commitment to democracy and ecology was forward-looking and has redefined the international concept of art. In the context of current discussions about social coexistence and the relationship between man and nature, the exhibition takes a new look at his work. In addition, Beuys' connection to the Ruhr region is highlighted, especially in the context of the founding of the two branches of his Free International University in Gelsenkirchen and Essen.

Technoschamanismus
HMKV Hartware Medienkunstverein
Ausgehend von der Figur des Schamanen, die Joseph Beuys Zeit seines Lebens kultivierte, widmet sich die Ausstellung aktuellen »technoschamanistischen« künstlerischen Positionen. Diese verstehen Schamanismus nicht nur selbst als Technologie, sondern suchen nach schamanischen Kräften mittels des Einsatzes von (spekulativer) Technologie. Zahlreiche der von Beuys so ikonisch eingesetzten Tropen zur Heilung und Verwandlung der Gesellschaft, zur Kultivierung eines spirituellen Zugangs zur Umwelt, zur Überwindung der Macht wie der Logik des Kapitals werden von zeitgenössischen Künstler*innen eingesetzt, welche auf diese Weise Beuys’ Strategien und Fragestellungen für das digitale Zeitalter aktualisieren.

Starting with the figure of the shaman, which Joseph Beuys cultivated throughout his life, the exhibition is devoted to current »techno-shamanistic« artistic positions. These understand shamanism not only as technology itself, but search for shamanic powers by means of the use of (speculative) technology. Many of the tropes that Beuys so iconicly employed to heal and transform society, to cultivate a spiritual access to the environment, to overcome power as well as the logic of capital are used by contemporary artists who in this way update Beuys’ strategies and questions for the digital age.

Die interdisziplinäre Ausstellung zeigt erstmalig Werke von Joseph Beuys zusammen mit ethnologischen Objekten schamanischer Lebenswelten aus dem zirkumpolaren, eurasischen Raum. Die Figur des Schamanen verkörpert für Beuys grundlegende Manifestationen spiritueller Zusammenhänge. Es handelt sich um die zukunftsorientierte Idee, durch ganzheitliches Denken und Handeln Heilung für die Gesellschaft zu erwirken.

The interdisciplinary exhibition presents for the first time works by Joseph Beuys together with ethnological objects from shamanic living environments in the circumpolar, Eurasian region. For Beuys, the figure of the shaman embodied fundamental manifestations of spiritual connections. At the core of this is the future-oriented idea of healing society through holistic thought and action.

Ausgehend vom Jubiläum des 100. Geburtstages von Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) wird das MKK den Fokus seines Interesses auf die Dimensionen und zeitgeschichtlichen Kontexte des Frühwerks des Künstlers, also die Zeit seiner Rückkehr aus dem II. Weltkrieg bis zur Berufung als Professor für Monumentale Bildhauerei an die Kunstakademie Düsseldorf 1961, richten. Diese sowohl gesellschaftlich als auch kunstgeschichtlich und biografisch ungemein prägenden Jahre eröffnen eine Vielzahl von ausstellungsrelevanten Themen, mit deren Hilfe eine sinnlich wahrnehmbare und zugleich kritisch-reflexive Herangehensweise an das Jahrhundertphänomen Beuys ermöglicht werden soll.

To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Joseph Beuys' birth (1921-1986), the MKK will focus on its interest in the dimensions and contemporary contexts of the artist's early work. This period spans the time from his return from WWII up to his appointment as Professor for Monumental Sculpture at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art in 1961. These years, that leave their indelible mark on society, in art history as well as biographically, bring to light a multitude of topics relevant for an exhibition with whose aid a sensually perceptible and also critically-reflective approach to Beuys as a phenomenon of the century is opened up.
