Works from the series Wee Muckers, Youth of Belfast are part of the
current exhibition.

After the Brexit referendum, Toby Binder focused in this series his work on Belfast in Northern Ireland where Protestant Unionists and Catholic Nationalists live in homogeneous neighborhoods that are divided by walls till today.
In this long-term project he accompanies teenagers from six different neighbourhoods in Belfast and provides an intimate and direct view of the everyday life of a generation.

With great sensitivity, he depicts impressions of the reality of individuals in his photographs, using his own clear and artistic visual language.

In 2021 Toby Binder started his project " kids 053" in Duisburg -Hochfeld, an industrial area. It Is is a long-term documentary about teenage life, social injustice and questions about own identity and belonging. While kids often neither know their parents‘ home country nor feel accepted in Germany, they use the digits 053 of the postcode of Duisburg-Hochfeld for identification. It‘s the only place they really feel belonging to. These are the "053kids".

Im Jahr 2021 startete Toby Binder sein Projekt "kids 053" in Duisburg-Hochfeld, einem Industriegebiet. Es ist eine Langzeitdokumentation über das Leben von Teenagern, soziale Ungerechtigkeit und Fragen nach der eigenen Identität und Zugehörigkeit. Während Jugendliche oft weder das Heimatland ihrer Eltern kennen noch sich in Deutschland akzeptiert fühlen, nutzen sie die Ziffern 053 der Postleitzahl von Duisburg-Hochfeld zur Identifikation. Es ist der einzige Ort, dem sie sich wirklich zugehörig fühlen. Das sind die "053kids".

In his photographs, Toby Binder impressively depicts the lives of young people in crisis-ridden regions of the world with a sensitive and individual visual language.

The title of the exhibition, ‘Where is my place?’, reflects the difficulties that many people experience in a modern world characterised by constant change, diversity, conflict and uncertainty. Young people in particular are faced with the question of where they feel at home and how they relate to their living space. Home is increasingly becoming a place of longing that has either been abandoned or has changed so much that an emotional connection and identification seems difficult.

In seinen Fotografien schildert Toby Binder mit einer sensiblen und individuellen Bildsprache eindrucksvoll das Leben junger Menschen in krisengeschüttelten Regionen der Welt.

Der Titel der Ausstellung „Wo ist mein Platz?“ spiegelt die Schwierigkeiten wider, die viele Menschen in einer modernen Welt erleben, die von ständigem Wandel, Vielfalt, Konflikten und Unsicherheit geprägt ist. Vor allem junge Menschen stehen vor der Frage, wo sie sich zu Hause fühlen und wie sie sich zu ihrem Lebensraum verhalten. Heimat wird immer mehr zu einem Sehnsuchtsort, der entweder aufgegeben wurde oder sich so stark verändert hat, dass eine emotionale Bindung und Identifikation schwierig erscheint.

Viewed from a distance, this photograph resembles to an abstract painting.
While travelling through Morocco and Spain, Kris Scholz was fascinated by the patterns of floors in old palazzi and other places. The fine traces on the floor break up the strict geometry. This creates a wonderful aesthetic space that moves between plane and three-dimensionality. The artist creates here an abstraction that moves secretly between ‘nothing’ and matter. When looking at the image, the perception seems to float above it, or in other words, the alternating effect of spirit and matter.

Aus der Ferne betrachtet, denkt man eher an ein abstraktes Gemälde als an eine Fotografie.Während einer Reise durch
Marokko faszinierten u.a. Muster von Fußböden in alten Palazzi den Fotografen. Der Künstler schafft hier in seiner Fotografie eine Abstraktion, die sich geheimnisvoll zwischen „Nichts“ und Materie bewegt Die feinen Spuren auf dem Boden brechen die strenge Geometrie auf. So entsteht ein wunderbarer ästhetischer Raum, der sich zwischen Fläche und Dreidimensionalität bewegt.. Beim Betrachten des Bildes scheint die Wahrnehmung darüber zu schweben, oder anders gesagt, die Wechselwirkung von Geist und Materie.
Die Ausstellung je suis ist noch bis zum 11. Mai 2024 zu sehen.

"I have always felt that, in a sense, the image “takes” me; in other words, I am drawn to something, or someone that I see, which, or who, somewhere strikes a note of familiarity to which I must respond. In this sense, every photograph we make is a part of a self-portrait, although often we do not either understand or admit this for a long time after the image has been made. Invariably it tells a great deal more about ourselves than it does about our subject. To me, a photograph is a kind of waking dream, one that does not vanish in the morning, is not censored, is not forgotten; it is there, to be looked at again and again over time, until one is ready to mine it for all its deeper meanings".

„Ich hatte schon immer das Gefühl, dass mich das Bild in gewisser Weise ‚ergreift‘, d.h. ich werde von etwas oder jemandem angezogen, den ich sehe und der oder die irgendwo einen vertrauten Ton anschlägt, auf den ich reagieren muss. In diesem Sinne ist jedes Foto, das wir machen, ein Teil eines Selbstporträts, auch wenn wir das oft lange Zeit nach der Aufnahme nicht verstehen oder zugeben. Es sagt immer viel mehr über uns selbst aus als über das Bildmotiv. Für mich ist ein Foto eine Art Wachtraum, der am Morgen nicht verschwindet, nicht zensiert und nicht vergessen wird; es ist da, um im Laufe der Zeit immer wieder angeschaut zu werden, bis man bereit ist, es auf all seine tieferen Bedeutungen hin zu untersuchen.

Let’s take a closer look at the mysterious photographs of Corina Gertz being part of the exhibition – je suis. The artist captures the quieter sides of women’s portraits: The back views. In all her works the magnificent fabrics and lavish embroidery become the main carriers of the information. A deep black background creates the perfect setting for the ornamented garments.

The material as a protagonist itself can tell the story about the traditions, customs and practices of a specific culture or environment. We are highly delighted show Gertz’s reflections on world, culturality and selfness in “je suis”.

In der Ausstellung wird eine Werkauswahl der Künstler Michaël Aerts, Corina Gertz, Christian Megert, Eva Rubinstein und Kris Scholz präsentiert.

Der belgische Künstler Michaël Aerts ist für seine monumentalen Skulpturen, die auf antike Vorbilder rekurrieren, bekannt.
Klassische Formen dienen dabei nicht einfach einer nostalgischen Erinnerung. Vielmehr wird die Historizität auf eine reflexive, kritische und konzeptuelle Weise thematisiert. In seinen Arbeiten changiert er oftmals zwischen Adaption, Zitation und Isolation tradierter Prinzipien.
In der Ausstellung wird seine Skulptur "Every Idea"(2015) zu sehen sein. Dabei wurde eine antike Büste mit Hilfe von Schrumpffolie abstrahiert, danach in weißer Bronze gegossen und mittels Silberpolitur in ein glänzendes und reflektierendes Objekt verwandelt.

"Alles wird hier reflektiert, auch die Betrachtenden. Der Raum, in dem sich die Skulptur befindet, spiegelt sich im Raumobjekt selbst."

"Alle meine Arbeiten sind Ausschnitte. Das ist auch die Art und Weise, wie wir die Dinge betrachten."

The exhibition presents a fine collection of works by the artists Michaël Aerts, Corina Gertz, Christian Megert, Eva Rubinstein and Kris Scholz.

The Belgian artist Michaël Aerts is famous for his monumental sculptures based on antique models. Aerts doesn’t simply use classical forms as a sort of nostalgic memento but views history in a rather reflexive, critical and conceptual way. In his pieces he is alternating between adoption, citation and isolation of archaic principles.
In his sculpture “Every Idea” (2015), which is part of this show, a classical bust is transformed and abstracted by using shrink film and then turned into a shining and reflecting object with white bronze and silver polish.

"Everything is reflected including the viewer. The space in which the sculpture is located is reflected in the spatial object itself."

"All my works are cut outs. That`s also the way how we look at things."

Wir freuen uns sehr, Sie bei unserer neuen Ausstellung "je suis" mit Werken von Michaël Aerts, Corina Gertz, Christian Megert, Eva Rubinstein und Kris Scholz begrüßen zu dürfen!

Wenn man in die Spiegelobjekte von Christian Megert schaut, begegnet man unweigerlich sich selbst und dem umgebenden Raum. Dabei entstehen je nach Blickwinkel und Lichteinfall immer wieder neue Ansichten und Spiegelungen.

"Ich möchte einen neuen Raum bauen, einen Raum ohne Anfang und Ende, in dem
alles lebt und zum Leben eingeladen ist; der gleichzeitig leise und laut, unbewegt und bewegt ist. [...] Ich versuche, einen Raum ohne Anfang und Ende und ohne Grenzen zu finden.
Wenn man einen Spiegel gegen einen Spiegel hält, findet man einen Raum mit
unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten, einen metaphysischen Raum."

Christian Megert ist einer der Hauptvertreter der Künstlerbewegung ZERO, die bis Ende der 1960er Jahre eine weltweit einflussreiche Avantgardebewegung war.

Today we focus on the outstanding artist Christian Megert.
When you look into his mirror objects, you inevitably encounter yourself and the surrounding space. Depending on the perspective, new images and reflections emerge again and again.

"I want to build a new space, a space without beginning and end, in which
everything lives and is invited to live; that is simultaneously quiet and loud, motionless and moving at the same time. [...] I try to find a space without beginning and end and boundaries.
If you hold a mirror against a mirror, you will find a space with
unlimited possibilities, a metaphysical space."

Christian Megert is one of the main representatives of the ZERO artists' movement, which was worldwide an influential avant-garde movement until the end of the 1960s.
