⁣Last chance: only today and tomorrow!⠀

The artists William Klein (1928-2022) and Shelly Silver (1957) are not only united by their⠀
birthplace New York, but also by their great interest in the multi-layered relationship between⠀
humans and their urban environment. Both William Klein’s photographs and films⠀
and Shelly Silver’s films and video installations tell of the diverse interactions within urban⠀
environments and their effects on individuals and communities.⠀

Boa-basedonart is presenting the two outstanding artistic positions in a joint exhibitionfocusing on the multi-layered narratives and different experiences of people in theirurban environments.⠀
In this context, we will present a selection of early lifetime prints⠀
by William Klein with motifs from New York, Rome and Tokyo and films by Shelly Silver,⠀
such as the video essay – “What I’m Looking For” which tells of a woman sets out to⠀
photograph moments of intimacy. On an Internet dating site she writes: ‘I’m looking for⠀
people who would like to be photographed in public revealing something of themselves…⠀
“What I’m Looking For” documents this adventure; the connections formed at⠀
this intersection between virtual and actual public space. The video is a rumination on⠀
the nature of photography and the persistence of vision. It is a short tale of desire and⠀
control. – Shelly Silver⠀

The artist Shelly Silver is known for her subtle film essays and documentaries. She studied European intellectual history and mixed media. Her work critically explores the emotional and psychological dimensions of urban life. The introspective and contemplative nature of her films allows the viewer to take an intimate look at the personal narratives and experiences of her protagonists. The subtly differentiated alternation between public and private spheres illuminates the individual and collective experiences that determine people’s urban lives.Shelly Silver’s work has been exhibited internationally and has won numerous awards.Shelly Silver lives in New York and is Professor and Director of Moving Image at Columbia University. ⠀

Famous above all for his photographs and photo books, William Klein initially studied sociology, but then turned to art. In the beginning, he focused on painting, before later turning to photography and film. His photographs are characterized by an exceptionally sensitive view of his subjects. He had an extraordinary ability to capture emotions and experiences in the vibrant chaos of cities in his photographs. Klein’s images reveal a deep understanding of the socio-cultural dynamics of the places where he found his motifs, such as New York, Paris, Rome and Tokyo. William Klein’s iconic photo books merge the artistic diversity of his work. Unique layouts combine image and text to create unusual narratives and views of the urban landscapes he photographs and their inhabitants. William Klein Klein’s work has been honored with various awards and international exhibitions. William Klein died in 2022 in Paris.⠀

⁣Come by and lose yourself in the intense paintings of Julie Oppermann.⠀
Trained as a neuroscientist, she captures the sensual depths of human experience and sensation. Her perception-challenging paintings foster the viewer's introspection.⠀

Julie Oppermann’s formally abstract paintings move to the level of visual illusions, but clearly transcend the boundaries of the Op-Art genre. Unlike other Op-Art artists who avoid the unplanned and uncoordinated through meticulous planning and ex*****on, Oppermann leaves room for coincidence. Seen up close, the artist’s handwriting becomes recognizable through traces of the painting process on the surface. This element of spontaneous expression corrupts the illusory impressions created by her compositions when viewed from a distance. Thus, her paintings become a metaphor for the importance of ruptures and contradictions in perception.⠀

⁣For all bibliophiles and Andrea Tippel enthusiasts: Until 22.10.23 you can visit the exhibition "Bibliomania - The Book in Art" at Städtische Galerie Bietigheim-Bissingen.⠀
Andrea Tippel is represented with her impressive 108 piece work "THE PHILOARS LIBARY".⠀

THE PHILOARS LIBARY” could be described as the condensate of Tippel’s reflections on literature and philosophy as well as on the book as a medium of preservation and distribution. The fictitious library comprises about 2000 books that have never been written.⠀
The titles are sometimes academic (“Post Neo Platonism nowadays – an a**lysis of the perception of ‘position’”), sometimes popular science (“the death of art”), sometimes satirical (“sunstroke, bee sting, copperplate engraving – about the equivoque of art”).⠀

⁣forget the weather tonight we have a mood lifter for you.⠀
The DC Open weekend begins and we open with the fantastic work of artist Julie Oppermann.⠀

⁣⠀
Julie Oppermann's artistic work operates at the interface between science and visual art. At first, encountering her works is an intense physical experience, which as a result opens up the possibility to reflect on one's own reception. With a focus on perception as such, the trained neuroscientist captures the sensory depths of human experience and sensation.⠀

Already during her bachelor's degree in art, Julie Oppermann was fascinated by neuroscience, as it linked the young art student's interest in psychology with the biology of the brain.⠀

Today, the artist explores visual phenomena in her works. Using moiré patterns, she manages to make the tension tangible between perception and cognition as part of the visual experience. Superimposing wavy lines, rows of circles, and other repeating geometric figures, she creates an intense sense of depth and movement in an image that is essentially completely flat.⠀

Julie Oppermann's formally abstract paintings move to the level of visual illusions, but clearly transcend the boundaries of the Op-Art genre. Unlike other Op-Art artists who avoid the unplanned and uncoordinated through meticulous planning and ex*****on, Oppermann leaves room for coincidence. Seen up close, the artist's handwriting becomes recognizable through traces of the painting process on the surface. ⁣back from the vacations straight into reality!⠀
last saturday we met .stevenett at a coffee shop at Kottbusser Tor before his weekly photo session to discuss our exhibition project on canadian photography. On this day everything was different. While we were in chat with him and his project partner Ioana, unexpectedly, the traffic was blocked by people who wanted to draw attention to the climate crisis. Within minutes we found ourselves in the harsh and aggressive reality. The majority of the car drivers reacted frighteningly violently and aggressively towards the mainly elderly protesters. Thus began a photo shooting of a very different kind.⠀

⁣After a great opening with lots of visitors you now gave the chance tonhave a closer look at the exhibition „Au 79 - Scheisse und Gold“.⠀

Gold the chemical element with the element symbol Au and ordinal number 79 – only a few metals have played such an influential role in the history of mankind. As an element of sacred heightening, a guarantee of value, and an embellishing material, it has served people for centuries. Gold has always been imbued with a multi-layered spiritual context. The precious metal has engaged alchemists, launched explorers, decided the fate of civilizations, dominated the world economy, and fascinated artists for millennia. Ancient legends about the material have survived into the modern era, cementing the idea of gold as a symbol of power and wealth.⠀
Also for centuries, there has been a close connection with a completely different material, s**t. Long before Sigmund Freud’s famous treatise “Character and A**l Eroticism,” in which Freud locates the development of our relationship to money primarily in the a**l phase of childhood, s**t and gold were closely linked in human perception. The Aztecs called gold the dirt of the gods -Teo cuital, the Babylonians called it the excrement of hell.⠀

06/05/2023

⁣Don't miss it! The exhibtion "Does Anybody Here Speak Japanese?" with works by Shigeko Kubota, Ben Patterson and Takako Saito is on view only until May 13.⠀

Takako Saito is a tireless worker, even at the ripe old age of 94 she gives several performances a year and manages major museum exhibitions. The perfection of the craftsmanship with which she creates objects, books, and her performance dresses point to the Japanese tradition of craftsmanship, but also to the fact that she has always had to do the production herself for reasons of cost. This enforced frugality, the use of trash and everyday materials is often attributed exclusively to the Fluxus context, but is equally due to her lack of financial means.⠀
Language is a great artistic potential with which Takako Saito repeatedly defies barriers and overcomes boundaries. In her works, for example, she uses English, German, French, Japanese, and Italian, among other languages. In her performances, she often uses a kind of phonetic language that, if one opens oneself to this process, is universal and understandable to all. In her works, Takako Saito connects the world and creates a space for herself and the viewers and co-performers in which nationalities and language barriers no longer play a role.⠀

⁣Are you interested in very moving and poltically meaningful works then come by and check out the works of Ben Patterson in our current exhibition "Does Anybody Here Speak Japanese“.⠀

Benjamin Patterson, the musician, composer, performance and visual artist who was born in Pittsburgh in 1934 and who passed away in Wiesbaden in 2016, played a central role in the founding of Fluxus, it took him a long time to receive the artistic recognition in the United States that he and his work deserved. Already disadvantaged as a Fluxus artist by the predominantly commercial exhibition and acquisition policies of museums, he was doubly disadvantaged as an African American artist. Even in the close environment of his Fluxus colleagues he experienced an irritating exclusion, the root of which was located in the unsolidary attitude towards the Black Power movement. ⠀

It is not surprising that the artist addressed these experiences in his work. Known primarily for his performative and sound-based pieces, Ben Patterson has created a variety of images and objects that mostly focus on issues of social inequality, racism, and politics in a very immediate way.⠀
Social exclusion is the central theme of his series „Diasters and Catstrophies“. In 2010, Patterson created this series of portraits of various megacities, including Tokyo, New York City, New Delhi, Mumbai, Mexico City, and São Paulo. Assemblages of photocopies, network maps of public transportation and texts on which are placed alongside “dioramas of misery”. By means of photographs and marzipan bodies formed by the artist himself, these dioramas give us a glimpse of the darker sides of these megacities. ⠀

Other works in the exhibition are by Shigeko Kubota and Takako Saito. ⠀

Does Anybody⠀
Here⠀
Speak Japanese?⠀
Shigeko Kubota⠀
Ben Patterson⠀
Takako Saito⠀

The three artists Kubota, Saito and Patterson are united by an artistic strategy of the intermedial, which was and is also influenced by their transnational experiences. This cosmopolitanism of the three can quickly be romanticized as a new, enriching or otherwise positively occupied potential to dive into other cultures again and again. However, on closer inspection, these shifts between continents and countries must at least be classified as ambivalent: Patterson, for example, has had experiences with racism throughout his life, up to and including professional exclusions as a professional musician and thus forced changes of country, and has repeatedly addressed these experiences anew in his works, while Kubota and Saito, with their move, left a narrow, patriarchal Japanese culture and were seeking in New York the possibility of exploring their self-empowerment as women and artists. But here, too, all three encountered limitations-Ben Patterson the New York avant-garde’s lack of interest in supporting the concerns of black people, Shigeko Kubota and Takako Saito the structural limitations not only of immigration laws but of Western varieties of chauvinism.⠀

⁣The preparations for the Art-Düsseldorf are in full swing!⠀
Instead of freezing outside in the Berlin winter - a studio visit at Julie Oppermann that brightens our mood.⠀

“Every image embodies a way of seeing” wrote the British art critic John Berger in his seminal text “Ways of Seeing” (1972).⠀

The way of seeing Julie Oppermann’s works is enigmatic, inviting the viewer to reflect on his or her perceptual relation to the world. An encounter with the artist’s paintings and videos is primarily an intense physical experience. In playing with the dynamics of visual perception, the studied neuroscientist captures our immediate sensorial attention, penetrating deeply into the heart of emotion and consciousness.⠀

We are looking forward to present you the impressive works of Julie Oppermann at the fair.⠀

⁣Are you fed up with the eternal gray? ⠀
Are you plagued by the February blues, then we have a remedy for you that will cheer you up!⠀
Come by and enjoy the wonderful and very humorous drawings and artist books by Andrea Tippel.⠀

Tippel’s drawings are steeped in personal thoughts and ideas, allowing viewers to deeply engage with her mental processes. Part of Tippel’s idea generation is the production of sketches, calculations, diagrams, and drafts. These come to represent what is pondered, interrupted, started, finished and left undone. Sometimes her drawings tell a unique story or represent a piece in a very musical sense. Other times they are grouped together conceptually in large cycles of up to 2,000 works. Each drawing excudes complexity, meaningfulness and philosophical depth coupled with a sense of cheerfulness and fearlnessness about corny jokes. ⠀

The brilliant interplay of humor and poetry in Andrea Tippel’s work is not only evident in her drawings, but also shines through in her idiosyncratic and exquisitely designed artist books. The edition “Auf Blesshuhnfüßen”, which was published in 1987 by her longtime artist friend Dieter Roth, is just one striking example to name.⠀
