Exciting news from KU Leuven's partner university! From 13 to 17 March, an International Week was held with the motto "On the path towards energy-wisdom".
During this week, 65 students, including 25 international students from Dortmund, Bilbao, Porto, Bolzano, and Udine, worked with real figures on energy production and consumption in seminars and assignments to gain a realistic overview of sustainable energy, projected energy shortages, and related problems. The aim of the block week was to develop a good understanding of numbers to have a voice in the debate based on science to lead to wise and sustainable energy policies.
In addition to gaining knowledge, students had an opportunity to meet and collaborate with other students and professors from different countries and universities in an international and multicultural environment.

At the same time, the Automotive Systems Block Week led by Björn Schäfer was held in Dortmund, covering the entire process of automotive system engineering from requirements elicitation to system qualification. The block week was attended by 11 international students from KU Leuven and UPV/EHU Bilbao.
We are proud to see students from different parts of the world coming together to learn and collaborate towards a sustainable future!

On May 19, 2023, Warsawa will host the IV International Workshop “IT Project Management” (ITPM 2023), organized by the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (Warsaw, Poland), Ukrainian Association of Project Management (Kyiv, Ukraine), Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine), Ternopil National Technical University named after I. Pulyuya (Ternopil, Ukraine), Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts ( Dortmund, Germany); AGH University of Science and Technology ( Krakow, Poland), International University of Information Technology (Almaty, Kazakhstan), IT Astana University (Astana, Kazakhstan).

The materials of the Workshop are planned to be published on the platform in proceedings with ISSN, which will be indexed in the Scopus database. The theme of the workshop reflects current problems in the field of IT portfolio management, programs, and projects. On December 15th the ProDiT partner AEIPRO – IPMA Spain will open the TechTalk series with the webinar “What are the competences for digital transformation?”.

The speakers are Jesus Martinez Almela, IPMA Chairman of the Council of Delegates, and Nargiza Mikhridinova, Coordinator of Erasmus+ KA2 ProDiT Project. The webinar and three following TechTalks (first half of 2023) with the ProDiT project partners will be delivered in English. On November 3rd 2022, ProDiT team members from NTNU, FH Dortmund, and UPV/EHU met with Spanish ProDiT industrial partners AgLa4D, MainStrat, IHOBE and AEIPRO in Bilbao, Spain.

The objective was to provide feedback on the progress of ProDiT research in the respective OpenCops and to follow up on how the partners can continue contributing to the ongoing research in the remaining period of the project. Several topics were covered in the discussion from the respective OpenCops topics, i.e., digital maturity models, competences management in the context of digital transformation, and sustainability aspect of digital transformation.

The industrial partners provided insights on their current digital transformation initiatives, challenges, and success factors enabling them to undertake such projects successfully. With such discussion, the partners obtained insights on the lessons learnt from such projects as input to the knowledge database in the frames of ProDiT.

The Train-the-Trainer event with the topic «English as Medium of Instruction» has taken place at FH Dortmund on 14-18th of November.

The event was organized in 2 thematic streams, offered by different organizations:
- Effective teaching using English as a Medium of Instruction “A practical approach”, offered by the Language School Stevens;
- Effective English Medium Instruction– tools and principles for academic faculty, held by the Norwich Institute for Language Education (NILE).

Among the participants of the training were representatives of such universities as Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University(NU-ZP), Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUCA), Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and other partner universities.

During the 5 days of full-time training, the participants have been learning about the advantages of English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) in higher education, strategies to facilitate comprehension, ways of managing a multilingual classroom, and other aspects of teaching in a sphere, where the English language is neither the mother tongue of the teachers nor in many cases the mother tongue of their students.

International Week is taking place for the 14th time from 14-18th of November at FH Dortmund!

During the week, our University will present its international offers and the internationalization of studies and teaching. Representatives of the partner universities are going to come to FH Dortmund to present the opportunities for the students, give open lectures, as well as to get to know their colleagues.

The visitors will have a chance to learn more about Chinese calligraphy and Sacreal architecture , listen to the lecture about artificial intelligence from the guest professor from Netherlands, get the information about studying abroad and much more!

The Sustainability and Quality Block Week started on the 4th of November at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Bilbao, Spain.

This year 22 master students from EuroMPM, MDT, and ESE master programmes are participating in the block week, and they have an intensive week ahead of them. This year the students are going to have 6 studying days, combined with 3 days of pure social programme. The studying sessions are going to be focused on the EFQM Excellence Model, including the work on real cases, Life Cycle Thinking, and Product Life Cycle Management.

Along with studying, the students will visit the incredible cities of Getxo and San Sebastián, a beautiful island Gaztelugatxe (Dragonstone), and of course a must-have of every Bilbao visit programme- the Guggenheim Museum.

The second project meeting of the WORK4CE project and a Pilot Teaching were held in Azerbaijan, Baku on 26-28th of October.

Three intensive days were organized in three universities: Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU), Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction(AzUAC), and Academy of the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ASCCA).

Consortium members had meetings with the Rector of Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University Prof. Mustafa Babanli, Vice-Rector for International relations of Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction Dr. Prof. Nargiz Abdullayeva, and Rector of the Academy of the State Customs Committee Prof. Gulu Novruzov.

More than 50 students and 20 academicians were able to take part in the lectures provided by representatives from the partner universities: «Life cycle thinking and sustainable management» by Erlantz Lizundia, «Open Educational Resources» by Galyna Tabunshchyk, «Digital twins» by Tjahjowidodo and Peter Arras, «Constructive communication in business» by Olena Verenych, «Managing Digital Change» by Carsten Wolff, and «Embedded Systems and Technology Trends» by Asif Ganbayev.

As a result of the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Academy of the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ASCCA) and the Ukrainian partner universities, including the Western Ukrainian National University (WUNU), Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University(NU-ZP), Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUCA), and Lviv Polytechnic National University (LPNU) was signed.

Less than one month is left until the end of the paper submission period for the 2023 IEEE European Technology and Engineering Management Summit (IEEE E-TEMS 2023)!

IEEE E-TEMS 2023 is addressing the challenge of achieving quality of life in smart cities through projects and digital ecosystems. This year it will take place on 20-22nd of April and is being organized by the Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania.

It will be the fourth IEEE E-TEMS Conference in Europe and the third in the 5-year’s E-TEMS Conference Series and is supported by the European Partnership for Project and Innovation Management (EuroPIM) Consortium. Its’ goals are to promote and explore the topics and relationships between Project Management, Digital Transformation, and Smart Cities.

Over the years, Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts and KU Leuven have been collaborating in the student- and teacher exchange, as partners in several European educational projects (ProDiT, ManDEE, WORK4CE), in common research, and in the organization of winter- and summer schools. At the beginning of November, the next step in the relationship between the universities will be done.

On 7-8th of November, the members of the EuroPIM community from FH Dortmund and KU Leuven will meet in order to discuss the preparation of possible double degree study programmes between the universities. Professor Lauwers, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Technology of KU Leuven, is going to visit FH Dortmund on these days.

As a result of this two-days meeting the next steps will be clarified, which will lead to the final purpose- the creation of double degree possibilities for students from both universities, who will get the opportunity to combine the unique advantages of both programmes.

The questions of learning in the age of digital transformation were discussed from 28-30th of September in Vienna, Austria, during the 25th International Conference on Interactive Collaborative Learning (ICL2022) "Learning in the Age of Digital and Green Transition" (ICL 2022).

During the conference, our colleagues Nargiza Mikhridinova and Carsten Wolf (FH Dortmund), Bertha Ngereja (NTNU), Bassam Hussein (NTNU), Wim Van Petegem (KU Leuven), and Jose Ramon Otegi-Olaso (UPV/EHU) got a chance to present the paper "Competence-based Support for Project-based Learning in Virtual Settings».

The core concepts of the paper were devoted to the implementation of the educational resources within the virtual Master School of the EuroPIM consortium, which was supported and validated by the first ProDiT pilot teaching session (conducted fully online).

The pilot teaching was conducted within the educational package “Agile & Projectized organisations in the digital era” (in terms of the module “Agile Management in Virtual Project Environments”), which used cross-border projects conducted by students from different countries in a purely online setting, involving 3 teachers, 2 PhD students, and 42 students from Spain and Germany.

The Train-the-Trainer event on the topic «English as Medium of Instruction (EMI)» will take place at FH Dortmund on 14-18th of November.

It is aimed at teachers, PhD students and academic staff from our partner universities with an English level of C1 and higher and is conducted by the Norwich Institute for Language Education (NILE).

During the Train-the-Trainer week the teachers and academic staff will have the opportunity to attend a training on English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) allowing them to gain insights on how to teach using English as a common language between teachers and students.

The participation is free of charge. Please note that the event will only take place on-site.

20 students participated in the workshop on TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework)* methodology, hosted by FH Dortmund.

During the workshop, the students were given two case studies from FH Dortmund and IHK-GfI (Chamber of Commerce and Industry), which they have been working on after completing the introductory lectures. As a result of the workshop, the students not only applied all the knowledge, received during the lectures, on the case studies, but also got a chance to network with their colleagues and develop important connections.

Today’s hero of the series is Mathias Fritzen, who teaches the «Self Management and Social Competences» course for the EuroMPM students.

💬 Hi Mathias, thank you very much for doing this interview! Tell us please a little bit about yourself. What’s your background and what do you do now?

«I grew up in a small town not far from Dortmund. I had an amazing circle of friends and married a wonderful woman. I was one of the first Parkour athletes in Germany doing shows for Adidas and being featured on all major TV channels. I studied communications design and had the privilege to create award-winning campaigns together with amazing teams for clients such as Lufthansa, DHL, and Telekom. I moved away. I lost contact with most of my friends. I got divorced. I injured myself badly and almost lost my arm. I no longer work in design.

Would I do all of it again if I had the chance to? Yes, definitely! Life is my teacher and I pass on the skills that life taught me: how to overcome obstacles, how to build mental strength, conflict-management, communication, self-reflection, goal-setting, and more.»

💬What’s your favorite course of those that you’re teaching and why?

«I am only teaching one and that’s my absolute favorite: Self Management and Social Competences. Why? Because the topics in this course are more relevant than ever before and yet so-called «soft skills» are rarely taught at universities at all. I see this as a great chance for my students to prepare for a challenging, exciting, and interconnected work environment.»

💬What do you like the most about teaching?

«I love being in touch with young, energetic, and brilliant minds. It inspires me and I learn as much as my students in the process.»

💬What do you think are the advantages of studying EuroMPM?

«One word: diversity. The EuroMPM attracts students from all over the world. Every student adds their own story, beliefs, culture, and unique ideas to the mix. That creates growth and learning opportunities on a daily basis. I see studying in such an environment as a great privilege.»

💬Who do you think the programme suits the most?

«Open-minded global thinkers.»

💬Please, give one piece of advice for students that you wish you were given at their age!

«That’s easy! Find something that you genuinely love to do - something that you are excited about. Work in that field and you’ll accomplish great things!»

FH Dortmund has received the project funding to support the students and teachers of the Ukrainian partner universities.

Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts has been cooperating with three Ukrainian universities for several years, primarily in the area of Master's degree programmes and doctoral student exchanges: the West Ukrainian National University (WUNU) in Ternopil, the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUCA), the National University "Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic" (NU-ZP) and recently Lviv Polytechnic National University (LPNU).

In order to maintain the teaching of the Master's programmes in Ukraine in the winter semester and to support the Ukrainian teachers with digital infrastructure, teaching materials, and fees or salaries, both in Dortmund and in Ukraine, the EuroPIM Virtual Master School Ukraine (EU-ViMUk) has been developed.

In terms of the project, up to 16 new teaching modules will be converted into e-learning modules, which will be taught online in the winter semester for Ukrainian students who do not have the opportunity to participate in face-to-face teaching in Ukraine. In addition, scholarships will be allocated to help students and doctoral candidates.

Up till this point, already 21 students have received online scholarships. 6 scholarships are planned for long-term-stay, so the students, who are currently located in Germany, have a chance to continue studying in their universities. Other fundings are also being allocated for PhD long-term research stays and for Ukrainian teachers, who continue offering courses in their universities.

As a result, we strive to promote the integration of Ukraine into the European Higher Education Area and to create all the conditions for the students to continue their educational process.
