🧐 Some events and dates do not only mark a pivotal change in history books, but also in all our lives. One is the year 1989: the year of the fall of the Iron Curtain. This part of history is personal: https://historycampus.org/2014/history-personal-interview-children-revolution-importance-1989/.
💭 We asked five people from Slovenia to Denmark who having one thing in common: they were born in 1989.. What do they think about their special year of birth?

🗨️❔ "Words Don't Matter Anymore": that's how our author Haris entitled his article about the Srebrenica Genocide: https://historycampus.org/2015/words-dont-matter-anymore/. But what must have happened to make words meaningless in the face of such an atrocious crime?
🗣️ From political speeches to everyday conversations, words are supposed to carry meaning. But when actions fail to follow, the power of words crumbles...
😓 The Srebrenica Genocide stands as a haunting reminder of what occurs when words don't matter anymore...

🤝 On 3rd October 1990, the German Treaty of Unification came into force. After 28 years of political and physical separation, Germany became one country again: https://historycampus.org/2024/football-flags-feeling-german/.
☝️ What does the youth think about "being German"? What is German identity? Is German patriotism allowed despite the heavy burden of a nationalistic past?
👀 Our EUSTORY History Campus authors Marlene and Yannis look deeper into the matter and ask: why do we see so many black-red-gold flags at football events, but not on German Unity Day?

👗 Have you ever wondered what the dress your grandmother wears on the photos has gone through? María looked closer into her grandmother's wardrobe: https://historycampus.org/2023/stitching-tradition-spanish-history-through-my-grandmothers-dress/.
⌛ Clothes are silent witnesses of the past. The way people dress reveals a lot about political systems and societies. So does the purple dress of María's grandmother which went through the decades of transition from Spanish Francoism to democracy.

🌉 More than a bridge in the middle of the Sound: Everyday, more than 70,000 people cross the Øresund Bridge connecting Sweden and Denmark. But it was only in 2000, when the bridge was completed, that the border between the two countries became blurred. Find out how it changed lives on both sides: https://historycampus.org/2023/love-across-the-sound/!

🗨️ When in Ireland, you hear English - but also Gaelige! What's this? -> https://historycampus.org/2020/irish-language-deep-rooted-or-force-fed/
🙌 For our author Neasa it's obvious: Gaeilge is part of the Irish cultural identity! But the language is rusty and spoken by less than 4% of the Irish people on a daily basis.

⌨️ Everyone's talking about ChatGPT & Co, but its impact on education is more or less a mystery. How to deal with AI writing seemingly perfect texts? And what if students let AI write their homework? But how to include AI in research in a transparent way: https://eustory.org/headlines-detail-norway/norway-s-test-how-to-deal-with-ai.
💬 Our organiser of the Norwegian History Competition, Karsten Korbøl, took on this uprising challenge. He opted for something a bit different and decided against an AI policy. There were no rules for the participants how to use AI!
🔎 Did Korbøl's approach work out in the end?

🕊️ Today, we remember the victims of all totalitarian regimes in Europe.
🧐 23 August is the European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Stalinism and N**ism. It marks the signing of the Molotow-Ribbentrop Pact on 23 August 1939. This agreement between the Soviet Union and N**i Germany divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence - and paved the way for WW II.
😧 For many people this meant suffering under the Fascists as well as the Communists. Both regimes committed severe atrocities against the civil population and their dissidents – the number of victims is estimated to be in the multiple millions.
👉 One of those who survived both oppressive regimes: Lev Alexandrovic Netto. He was imprisoned in a German camp and later in a Soviet Gulag. Join our two History Campus authors, Camilla and Jorge, as they delve into this dark history from the personal perspective: https://historycampus.org/2015/the-personal-side-of-history-meeting-with-lev-alexandrovic-netto/.

🧱 63 years ago, the construction of the Berlin Wall started. Families and friends were seperated into a communist-socialist east and a democratic-capitalist west for over 28 years.
🎙️ What does this mean for German society? And what does "German" even mean? Find all the answers in our History & Politics-Podcast: https://koerber-stiftung.de/mediathek/the-new-germany-s03e05-social-transformation-what-is-german/!
🚦Even though the Wall has fallen in 1989, a non-physical border keeps existing: Until today, around 60% of the population still see more divison than unity between Germany's East and West. Differences in socio-economic aspects, but also in political representation are still visible .

😓 Since 867 days, life for young people in Ukraine has not been the same. The Russian war deprives the young generation of their future. The bombing of a Ukrainian children's hospital is the latest proof of these cruelties and still leaves us stunned.
🖌️ In student's drawings, recently collected by colleagues of the Ukrainian EUSTORY history competition, the youth's fears, but also their never ending hope become visible: https://koerber-stiftung.de/en/projects/eustory/war-and-dreams-childrens-drawings-from-ukraine/
