Does cultivated meat need a regulatory definition or different labeling?
The question is, what is cultivated meat?
Is a product, that contains 10 % muscle cells real meat? And what does that mean for labeling?
Read more about this in an article from last year.
„There are also questions around labelling, with the old definition of meat in law being that it’s part of an animal intended for human consumption. ‘Do we need to adapt the definition here?’, he says. The current definition ‘doesn’t include anything about cultures. That’s a little bit outdated.“
Food law: regulatory frameworks play catch up on cultivated meat products Cultivated meat is, according to Philip Lymbery, Chief Executive of animal welfare charity Compassion in World Farming, ‘humanity’s version of something that nature has already given us’. Noting that it’s produced in a bioreactor ‘from stem cells harmlessly drawn from donor animals’, Lym...
🥩 The scale-up production of cultivated meat is often criticized as being potentially too expensive. However, this ignores the fact that every new technology is initially more expensive and becomes cheaper over time.
💲 To support this, there is a theory called "Wright´s Law" that shows that upscaling will bring significant cost savings for innovative technology. This is also and especially true for the production and development of 100 % cultivated meat that we focus on at MyriaMeat.
✅ "Wright´s Law", also known as the learning curve effect, is an economic principle stating that for every doubling of production, the cost of manufacturing a new unit typically decreases by a constant percentage.
✅ This law has been observed across various industries and technologies, indicating that increased production leads to improved efficiency and reduced costs. It is particularly noted in the context of technological advancements, where it helps predict how quickly costs will decrease as production scales up.
So don´t worry too much about the costs. The global development of the cultivated meat industry will definitely mean that cultivated meat can be offered at market prices after the manufacturing processes have been scaled up.

🐄 🐖 It is obvious that cultivated meat helps to improve animal welfare.
Moreover, cultivated meat is rightly referred to as food tech.
However, far too little attention is paid to the fact that cultivated meat is likely to have the potential to reducing the CO2 footprint of global meat production.
This means that cultivated meat also deserves to be called CleanTech, ClimaTetech or GreenTech.
Of course, there are challenges in the production process, but these are likely to be overcome by scaling up cultivated meat production on an industrial scale.
On the other hand, you have to look at what is being eliminated. Very few people are aware of the CO2 footprint that factory farming really entails, especially when the meat produced is also transported around the world.
There are so many negative touchpoints with the environment, from the land used to raise the animals and feed to slaughter, transportation and processing, that it should be clear to everyone that we need to reduce the proportion of meat produced from mass farming in the future.
It is therefore important to recognize the role that cultivated meat can play for the environment.
Reducing it to just the product or positioning it as an alternative to conventional meat is correct in terms of content, but otherwise falls short.
🥩🌱 So, cultivated meat = climate tech!
