ARKET NOTES | Olga Prader is a Swiss-born, Paris-based illustrator and graphic designer, schooled at ECAL in Lausanne and at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. She’s a good friend of ours, and to our great joy, she’s also the artist behind the drawings featured in our new ARKET CAFÉ collection, depicting the cycle of the seasons through lifelike, humouristic characters from the field, forest, and garden.

'Illustration was always a side project for me. When I was in school, I did some drawings on the side and printed my own fanzines and stuff. And then when I started working, I made drawings for friends to tell stories and make them laugh. It was never something I thought I could do professionally.

Drawing is very different from my other work, in that it’s very personal. Whatever I make, it’s about telling stories related to myself or about how I feel. Whether I’m making a joke or I’m sad or a bit melancholic, I put that in the drawing as well,' Olga says over the phone from Paris.

'I mean, you draw with your body and your hand and the way you move, so the drawings are like an extension of yourself. I have a round, strong body and really wide hands, and I love drawing hands and feet. I think you can feel my body shape and movements in the way I draw.

I really try to tell stories. They’re silent but very present. So even if I draw fruit and vegetables, there will be tiny details or movements that make you feel that there are some interactions between the characters. They’re maybe talking to each other or just waiting for something to happen.

When I depict them, they’re excited, or in love, shy, or envious. They look a bit voluptuous and sensual, a little naughty. I think it’s just a little reminder that pure virtue doesn’t exist. I’m very interested in that. That’s why they look like characters, somehow. Does that make sense?'

ARKET NOTES | A few months ago, we asked Stockholm’s Studio Kleiner to create a series of still lifes interpreting the concept of seasonality in Nordic cuisine, which not only represents our culinary heritage but also serves as the foundation for ARKET CAFÉ.
Flowing with the cyclical rhythm of the seasons — and saving for later — lies at the heart of Nordic cooking. While not exclusive to the Nordics, the extremes of daylight and temperature have made the interconnectedness of food, culture, and nature a fundamental aspect of how our dishes are prepared and enjoyed. The abundance of the fields and forests during the short fertile season must be preserved to make the most of the ingredients and ensure they last throughout the year, becoming memories of sweetness and light during the darker months. Grains, in particular, have served as an essential staple — a perfect storage medium for the solar energy of summer — making the flavour of dry bread one of the most distinctive characteristics in Nordic recipes.
From spring to early autumn, our local ingredients reach peak ripeness, encouraging a deep connection with nature and allowing us to play with vibrant flavours with a minimum of processing. From nettles, ramson, and asparagus via strawberries and courgettes to mushrooms, plums, and kale, these seasonal ingredients are enjoyed fresh or preserved through techniques such as pickling, drying, and fermentation.
While deeply rooted in Nordic traditions, the New Nordic food movement, originating the early 2000s, seeks to reinterpret classic methods and ingredients in innovative ways. It embraces modern influences and elements from culinary traditions worldwide, contributing to the dynamism of the contemporary food scene through the interchange between new and old, local and global.
Above all, though, it represents a philosophy that has dramatically changed the way we eat and drink in the last decades. Reintroducing a focus on the origin and production of our everyday food, the ambition is to try to reconnect our meals with the environment that produces them after a century of increasing separation between land and food.
