🏠 Standing looms were primarily indoors, contrasted by lying looms on rooftops.
✨ Did you know? Wool naturally repels water due to its greasy coating—so you'd have greasy fingers after weaving!
👚Mostly women took care of weaving at home. Men who worked as tailors were looked down upon.
🔖 The famous "robe without seam" that Jesus wore could likely have been crafted on such a vertical loom, woven in one continuous piece.

🚣‍♂️🔨Let's build a boat! Did you know that in the Sea of Galilee, a boat from Jesus' era, often referred to as the "Jesus Boat," was discovered in 1986? Although not actually Jesus' boat, it was preserved in silt and could be recovered at low water.
This allows us to recreate such a boat as historically accurate as possible.
🌲 The original "Jesus Boat" was primarily constructed from Lebanese cedar and non-local oak. It had also undergone repairs with cheaper Galilean wood. Before the base became so unusable that it was eventually sunk.
👥 Interestingly, such a boat could accommodate up to 16 people!

Why is this Roman Curule chair in ancient Galilee? This seat of authority. It's featured in our game as the chair of the tax collector Levi in Capernaum. Dating back to ancient Rome, the Curule Chair was a symbol of power and prestige. In "ONE of 500", it represents both the worldly status and the moral complexities of its occupant. Levi is Jewish, but both culturally and politically his activities are strongly influenced by Roman and Hellenistic culture - not always to the delight of his peers.

Was macht ein römischer Stuhl im antiken Galiläa? Dieser sogenannte kurulische Stuhl dient in unserem Spiel als der Stuhl des Zöllners Levi in Kapernaum. Ursprünglich aus dem antiken Rom stammend, war der kurulische Stuhl ein Symbol für Macht und Ansehen. In "ONE of 500" repräsentiert er sowohl den weltlichen Status als auch die moralischen Komplexitäten seines Besitzers. Levi ist Jude, doch sowohl kulturell als auch politisch ist seine Tätigkeit stark von der römischen und hellenistischen Kultur beeinflusst - nicht immer zur Freude seiner Mitmenschen.

Since colors were an important part of social, religious, and political attitudes in the 1st century, it's no surprise that we at ONE of 500 are spending our time getting them right for our game! What do you think of it? And what do you think was the most expensive color in the 1st century? Take a guess! Heute geben wir einen kleinen Vorgeschmack auf unsere Recherchearbeit und darauf, was ihr im Spiel erleben könnt.

Da Farben ein wichtiger Bestandteil der sozialen, religiösen und politischen Einstellungen im 1. Jahrhundert waren, ist es keine Überraschung, dass wir bei ONE of 500 unsere Zeit damit verbringen, sie für unser Spiel richtig einzusetzen! Wie findest du diese ersten Eindrücke? Und was glaubst du, war die teuerste Farbe im 1. Jahrhundert? Wir sind gespannt auf deinen Tipp! Im Laufe der Woche zeigen wir euch ein paar Beauty Shots von einem besonderen Schauplatz unserer Story, bei dem sich alles um Farben dreht!

Although we don’t know for sure what fancy footwear Jesus walked with, we do know that footwear in the first century is more mysterious then you would expect. With theories ranging from the idea that the majority of the population likely walked barefoot, to those that argue that people started crafting just ANYTHING to protect their feet.

Now what we do know for sure is that for those who had the money, a pair of leather sandals is what you wanted. And that is exactly what we just finished for our game: ONE of 500

Not owning any footwear would certainly suck. But what is something you would most definitely miss if you were to live in the first century?🤨

Obwohl wir nicht mit Sicherheit wissen, mit welchem ausgefallenen Schuhwerk Jesus unterwegs war, wissen wir, dass Schuhe im ersten Jahrhundert geheimnisvoller sind, als man erwarten würde. Die Theorien reichen von der Vorstellung, dass ein Großteil der Bevölkerung wahrscheinlich barfuß lief, bis hin zu denen, die behaupten, dass die Menschen schon bald anfingen, einfach ALLES zu basteln, um ihre Füße zu schützen.

Sicher ist, dass die Menschen, die das nötige Geld hatten, ein Paar Ledersandalen haben wollten. Und genau das, haben wir gerade für unser Spiel fertiggestellt.

Kein Schuhwerk zu besitzen, wäre sicherlich nicht schön. Aber was würdest du auf jeden Fall vermissen, wenn du im ersten Jahrhundert leben würdest? 🤨

😉 Spoiler: It plays a role in more AAA games than you think

As promised, here comes the follow-up post with the details behind the idea of our belt.

While nowadays a belt is mainly used to hold clothes in their place, in the first century belts had several functions at once.

There were various ways to wear clothes and often one had to organize quite some fabric, so that it was on the one hand functional and on the other hand looked good! For work, often short clothing was worn that did not restrict movement. This could also be achieved by rucking up the garment, which was then put into place with the belt.

Another important purpose of the belt was the transport of small objects such as coins or tools.

Wie versprochen kommt hier der Folge-Post mit den Details hinter der Idee unseres Gürtels.

Während ein Gürtel heutzutage hauptsächlich dazu dient, Kleidung zu fixieren, hatten Gürtel im ersten Jahrhundert gleich mehrere Funktionen.

Es gab verschiedenste Wege Kleidung zu tragen und oftmals hatte man einigen Stoff entsprechend zu organisieren, damit es zum einen zweckdienlich war und zum anderen gut aussah! Zum Arbeiten wurde oftmals kurze Kleidung getragen, die die Bewegung nicht einschränkte. Das konnte man auch durch das Hochraffen eines Gewandes erreichen, das man im Anschluss mit dem Gürtel fixierte.

Ein weiterer wichtiger Zweck des Gürtels war der Transport von kleinen Gegenständen wie Münzen oder Werkzeugen.

After our progress with clothing and materials, we can now focus on some of the more fun accessories. First up: The average person's belt. Mainly used for storage, certainly helpful to equip yourself with some must-have belongings.

Wozu braucht man einen Gürtel, wenn man keine Hose trägt?!

Nach unseren Fortschritten bei der Kleidung und den Materialien können wir uns jetzt auf einige interessante Accessoires konzentrieren. Als erstes: Der Gürtel eines durchschnittlichen Bürgers. Er dient hauptsächlich zur Aufbewahrung und hilft dabei, sich mit einigen unverzichtbaren Gegenständen auszustatten.

In one of our first demos, there is a character skeptical of the movement around this new teacher, Jesus from Nazareth. Though living in a world full of hostility, she is struck by the idea of what a world would look like in which everyone loved their enemies. It occupies her mind and sets a process in motion, which she shares with the player character. We can see that such impulses have lost none of their relevance over the past 2000 years.

For this reason, our team works with such a passion and commitment on our game ONEof500 in the hope of making a positive impact on a personal and a even bigger level.

In einer unserer ersten Demos gibt es eine Figur, die der Bewegung um diesen neuen Lehrer, Jesus aus Nazareth, skeptisch gegenübersteht. Obwohl sie in einer Welt voller Feindseligkeit lebt, ist sie beeindruckt von der Vorstellung, wie eine Welt aussehen würde, in der jeder seine Feinde liebt. Sie setzt damit einen Prozess in Gang, den sie mit der Figur des Spielers teilt. Wir sehen, dass solche Impulse in den letzten 2000 Jahren nichts an Relevanz verloren haben.

Aus diesem Grund arbeitet unser Team mit so viel Leidenschaft und Engagement an unserem Spiel ONEof500, in der Hoffnung, einen positiven Einfluss, auf persönlicher oder gesellschaftlicher Ebene, zu haben.

Walls are certainly nothing new! Especially not in Capernaum where we literally took hundreds of reference pictures of them😆 Let's travel back in time to examine these stone walls, which can still be seen today, even though they are from 1st-4th century CE. We are giving our best to build them back up in glorious detail for our game ONE of 500!🔥

What is going through this person's mind?
Character-creation for ONEof500 is a fun but humbling experience.
Apart from the biblical characters, such as Simon Peter or the tax collector Levi, we also populate the Capernaum of Jesus' time with all kinds of fictional characters. We try to think ourselves into all kinds of roles: a poor day laborer, a rich cloth merchant, the father of an average fisherman's family. As we create backstory and personality, all sorts of questions come up, like: What are the person's desires and goals? What are fears or worries? What is on the person's mind? Suddenly it makes you feel very close to 2000 year old fictional characters.

You decide: What is going through this person's mind? Or: Who is he?

How did people cook in the time of Jesus? - Our Quest to recreate ancient Capernaum continues.
Today we look at the Tabun, the usual oven in the time of Jesus. It was used to bake bread by clapping it against the inner wall. Or with a cooking pot that was placed on the Tabun to cook. The most common fuel was animal dung, but people also used the remains of olives after pressing.

Wie haben Menschen zur Zeit Jesu gekocht? - Unsere Mission das antike Kapernaum zu rekonstruieren geht weiter.
Heute sehen wir uns den Tabun an, den üblichen Ofen zur Zeit Jesu. Mit ihm wurde Brot gebacken, indem man den Teig an die Innenwand drückte. Zudem konnte man einen Kopftoch oben auf den Tabun stellen. Der gängigste Brennstoff war Tierdung, aber die Menschen benutzten auch die Reste von Oliven nach dem Öl-Pressen.

Welche antiken Gegenstände freut ihr euch am meisten im Spiel zu sehen?
