Improving the microclimatic situation of public spaces is a concern for many cities and municipalities. Shading measures can make urban spaces more pleasant and attractive, integrate themselves into their surroundings, even enhance their appearance and invite people to linger.

If you want to welcome guests or the public in places that are exposed to the weather, you need to offer protection. Whether on market squares, in restaurants, parks or on waterfront promenades – the comfort and well-being of those who visit these places must be the top priority. The aim is not just to make spaces available, but to make them truly usable and lively. Convertible umbrellas are the ideal solution for these requirements. Up in the air: at a height of around 600 metres, the world's largest crescent is enthroned at the top of the Mecca Royal Clock Tower. The surface of the 23 metre high crescent, including the spire, is decorated with over 1000m² of gold mosaic tiles. As a monocoque structure, it contains no internal support frame. The 107-tonne crescent is used for functional purposes and is the highest prayer room in the world. The insights into the installation process illustrate the scale only too well.

This year we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of our umbrellas at the Renaissance Castle in Wasseralfingen, Germany. The 4 umbrellas each shade an area of over 50 m² and make the inner courtyard of the castle usable at all times. As a design & build company, we were involved in the project from the first sketch through to realisation and are particularly proud of one of our few projects in our home country. The atmosphere in the inner courtyard benefits enormously from the structures and the venue is enhanced both climatically and visually. We hope that the umbrellas will fulfil their purpose for a long time to come.

The interplay of light and shadows creates a calming environment on the piazza of the Holy Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The umbrellas offer shelter from the sun and add to the peaceful mood of the square. It is fascinating how the atmosphere of a place can be transformed by something as simple as a shade. At this magical place, many believers will again find protection during the current Ramadan. A blessed holy month to all muslims celebrating.

In the middle of last year, after some preparation time for our team, it was time to pack our boxes and move to Stuttgart-Plieningen. Our cherished old building in another part of Stuttgart has been home to us for many years; many guests, customers and partners have come and gone, we have been able to work on numerous projects and have experienced a lot. However, it was getting more and more outdated, so that a renovation became necessary. We needed an alternative to bridge the gap, but it wasn't easy to find one. After a few viewings, we came across the Hanselmannmühle (a mill) in Stuttgart-Plieningen, which immediately captivated us. SL Rasch as a design & build expert in the field of lightweight architecture has been selected to feature in The Future of Engineering initiative by the British Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in collaboration with the publishing and communications company St. James House. Therefore, we are part of the documentary "Putting the Smart Into Cities" about the contribution of technology to sustainable urban development. Recently published, it focuses on cities of the future and shows companies that can contribute to their sustainable design from an engineering perspective.

Ibrahim Aydin is a civil engineer and has deepened his knowledge in the master's programme "Computational Engineering". During his time at the Ruhr University Bochum, he participated in a research project of the Chair of Steel and Construction and decided to write his Master's thesis on the topic "Structural Optimisation of Truss Structures with a Parametric Design Approach". The search for a suitable practical partner led him to SL Rasch. In the meantime, he is a permanent engineer with us and regularly applies the results of his thesis in our projects. For the State Garden Show 2023 in , Germany, SL Rasch designed and constructed a awning that fits perfectly into a framing willow dome designed by the building arts group Sanfte Strukturen. In the middle of the extensive grounds of the show, the structure has been created as a place where events and lectures can take place on hot summer days in a naturally air-conditioned environment or where guests can relax. 13th Real Estate Development Summit in Milan – we appreciate the opportunities and versatility offered at this event. We heard great presentations and discussions on the topics of urban development, intelligent building solutions, AI in design or BIM, had super interesting meetings with potential partners and gained insights into current and future building projects, to which we can optimally add our expertise and structures. We are celebrating the 10th anniversary of our umbrella group at Sundance Square in Fort Worth, Texas. The convertible umbrellas give the square a unique character and radiate their charm not only during the day, but also illuminated in the brightest colours at night. They allow parts of the square to be used regardless of the weather. Visitors are protected during concerts, market strolls or simply while sitting outside and enjoying a cup of coffee. We have projects in many different countries around the world, as well as clients, partners and employees of many different nationalities. At the same time, we are located in the small town of Oberaichen near Stuttgart in Germany. And just as we have our history, so does the building in which our office has been located for over 30 years now and where we go in and out every day. The charm of the old woodworking factory that operated here before us can still be felt in many corners. This company has also been internationally active and has won many awards for its design.
