🌱🍇Spring has sprung, and for wineries in the northern hemisphere, it's planting season!

Pictured here is some Sauvignon Blanc I helped plant with .am.stein in Germany a few years ago.

How it works:

Grape vine clones are typically grown in nurseries using a process called grafting. Grafting is the process of taking a piece of a grapevine, called a scion, and attaching it to the rootstock of a different vine.

First, a piece of the desired grape vine clone is taken from a mature vine (in this case, Sauvignon Blanc) that has proven to produce high-quality grapes. This piece is called a scion. The scion is then carefully cut to match the diameter of the rootstock, which is the base of the new plant.

Next, the rootstock is cut, creating a flat surface where the scion will be attached. The two pieces are then joined together using a special type of tape or wax to keep them in place.

Over time, the scion and the rootstock will grow together, forming a new grapevine. This new vine will have the same genetic characteristics as the original vine from which the scion was taken.

Once the grafting process is complete, the newly created grapevine is carefully nurtured in the nursery until it is ready to be planted in the vineyard.

Overall, grafting is an important and precise process that allows wineries to replicate and preserve the unique characteristics of high-quality grape vines, like these Sauvignon Blanc clones, ensuring a consistent and delicious wine year after year.
