REVIEW
Notstandskomitee – The Doomsday Layout (Album – Block 4)
Genre/Influences: Minimal-Electro, Experimental, Cinematic.
Format: Digital, CD.
Background/Info: Block 4 owner Malte Steiner strikes back with a new album of his legendary Notstandskomitee project. The German Electro-Experimentalist got instant fame during the 90s and never stopped composing new material. “The Doomsday Layout” features sixteen tracks that have been composed between 2009 and 2023.
Content: For all of those who’re familiar with the work of the artist it will be rather easy to recognize his sound and approach. Notstandskomitee remains first of all devoted to the creation and experiment of sounds. It feels once more like sounds have been assembled in a sonic frame and getting more accessible by slow rhythms. The tracks are revealing endless effects but also deep bass lines and blasts, bombastic sound arrangements and a few vocal effects.
+ + + : Malte Steiner remains a true sonic architect; a studio engineer transposing sounds and noises into a new shape. Some tracks have a visual appeal while other are getting back to early Minimal-Electro experiments. A few other -and more accessible, cuts have this Kraftwerk-touch on top but Notstandkomitee remains first of all Experimental and even Abstract. The minimalism also becomes visionary when listening to the funny entitled song “Watch People Reacting To Music By Notstandskomitee” which has something Techno-like for future generations. The last track “Big Drama In Small Cities” is another great attention grabber for its sensual rhythmic, deep bass line and evasive sensation.
- - - : A very few spoken samplings and/or vocals would be a little bonus.
Conclusion: Music from a true Electro-scientist!
Best songs: “Watch People Reacting To Music By Notstandskomitee”, “Big Drama In Small Cities”, “Expertensysteme”, “Rules Replacing Trust”, “Planning The Unplannable”.

RIP Dave Smith, founder of Sequential Circuits and DSI, synthesizer pioneer and one of the creators of the MIDI standard.
A Sequential Circuits Six-Trak was the core of the sound of Notstandskomitee at its beginning 1991, including the song 'Gebärmutter'. The synthesis was rather basic but it was 6 times multitimbral, means it provided 6 different midi controllable analog sounds at the same time, like 6 monophonic synths. Multitracking and overdubbing was not in my reach in that time due to the lack of money. Multitracking was in the composition and sequencing, all audio was mixed down in one go and recorded on stereo. In that time the Six-Trak, originally from 1984, could be bought cheaply second hand, and it was Claus of PNE who suggested it to me.
The Six-Trak is now in storage, but these days in the block 4 studio there is a DSI Tempest drumsynthesizer and the Smith/Oberheim collaboration OB6 synthesizer, which is one giant sweetspot synth.

nice review by Side-Line of the Notstandskomitee / THX 1971 splitalbum Elektrofusion, released on Minimalkombinat. Some vinyl records still available from the block 4 shop.
REVIEW
Notstandskomitee / THX 1971 – Elektrofusion (Album – Minimalkombinat)
Genre/Influences: Electro, Electro-Wave, Experimental.
Format: Digital, Vinyl.
Background/Info: “Elektrofusion” is a split album between famous German artist Notstandskomitee (aka Malte Steiner) and the less familiar German project THX 1971 (driven by Thomas Meier-Goldau).
Content: Notstandskomitee doesn’t need any further introduction for lovers of Minimal/Experimental-Electro. Malte Steiner composed 5 tracks, which are immediately getting the listener into an intimate, minimal and robotic Electronic music universe. The last track is the darkest one and still features space-like sound treatments.
THX 1971 sounds also minimal, but definitely more ‘pop’ orientated. The 6 songs are bringing us back to 80s nostalgia and are driven by robotic vocals.
+ + + : I’m not that often fond of split albums, but this is one I highly recommend. It’s an opportunity to get back to Notstandskomitee, which according to me remains an essential artist in the history of Electronic music while it’s also a way to discover a new and talented artist THX. Nodstandskomitee didn’t take me by surprise, but it sounds good to hear new stuff from this artist. Both last tracks are brilliant for their sound treatments. THX 1971 sounds like a good surprise; melodic, minimal and danceable. This is great vintage electronic music.
- - - : I only wish to hear more music from THX 1971 and new stuff by Notstandskomitee.
Conclusion: Robotic Electronic music with attitude; original old-styled music by two talented artists.
Best songs: “Testgelände”, “Totmannschalter” + “Das System Gewinnt Immer”, “2021”.
Rate: 8½.

video: Notstandskomitee concert 2. September 2021 Aalborg
Aalborg: The Working City was an audiovisual site specific concert reflecting on the industrial past and current transition of the Danish city, performed outdoors 2. September 2021. Being a former industrial workers city, Aalborg has to find its way so it still can function and stay attractive.
With transition comes change and not without effects on its citizens and the face of Aalborg. One doesn’t have to look into the writings of Richard Florida to know about the dangers of these processes such as gentrification but he also formulates what makes a city tick.
Malte Steiner works with these urgent topics of urban development in his artistic practice, the latest realisation is the art project The Big Crash he started in 2019.
For the event Aalborg: The Working City he creates a show with his electronic music project Notstandskomitee, founded in 1991. The departure point of this piece is the past of Aalborg, illustrated with Industrial sounds and realtime generated visuals with a custom software and historical pictures from a private archive, slowly transforming into modern Click’N’Cuts and IDM sounds. It is performed with a combination of prepared material, live modular synthesizer and metal percussion, not only illustrating the history of the city but also the development of Notstandskomitee itself, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
Organised by Brolandingerne and supported by Aalborg Kommune and Vigenstarteraalborgsammen
The all new tracks are going to be included in the next two Notstandskomitee albums for release, the start makes the upcoming CD album scheduled for January 2022.
