🐸 Let's protect the frogs 🐸

Frogs and other amphibians are an important part of our ecosystems, but their habitats are threatened by urban development. To protect the frogs, we make frog inventories to find out where they live and create new homes for them. SCALGO Live lets you find the frogs. 🐸

Student talks: "SCALGO Live is fast, easy and perfect." 👨‍🎓🎓

Meet Michał Wójcik, an Environmental Protection graduate from Poland who used SCALGO Live in his engineering thesis. He is one of over 5000 students that use SCALGO Live in their studies.

In his engineering thesis, Michał tried to solve the flooding issues in his hometown Rawa Mazowiecka. 💧

"I used SCALGO Live to see whether my solutions work", he explains.

"Blue-green measures should have the same weight in creating solutions as grey infrastructure." 💧🌱 We met with David Winter from Scottish Water, Scotland's national water utility that services 2.46 million households, to chat about their vision and strategy for surface water management.

To assess surface water on catchment scale, there is a need to model and understand surface flow and become better at finding surface interventions that can help reduce and even prevent water from entering the sewer system.

New nationwide land cover in Norway 🏡⛰️ We continue our land cover roll-out with a new land cover map in Norway! Land cover maps by SCALGO are developed using machine learning. We analyse orthophotos in detail, and with help from some additional data, we create maps with 10 land cover classes.

The project seminar presented new innovative ways to plan flood mitigation in municipalities! ☔ ⛈
150 surface water practitioners from Norwegian municipalities gathered in Bærum Municipality to hear about new possibilities in SCALGO Live for creating flood management strategies.

That was also the case when we created Canvas, a new extension to SCALGO Live. Canvas is the easiest way to start creating illustrative maps and plans together.

Meet Liza, our latest addition to the marketing and communication team. Liza, originally from Estonia, is doing the last year of her Master in Marketing at Aarhus BSS - Aarhus Universitet. She joined SCALGO in August this year.

Meet Esben Noer Lund, who started working at SCALGO in the Copenhagen team in August this year.

"With a Master's degree in Geoinformatics from Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen, my focus lies in GIS and Remote Sensing. I work with the tech team in Aarhus to create the land cover maps you see in SCALGO Live. I also function as the link between the Market Managers in Copenhagen and the developers, making sure our user's needs for new and exciting data are met."

We love to develop tools and analyses based on requests and ideas from users 💚

This year, we added new features to the Depression map. This update is, for example, useful when designing ponds and wetlands with focus on biodiversity. To attract different types of species it is important to create terrains with variations in water depths, slopes and more. 🌿 🐛

Here's what's new:
💚 The banded style visualizes volumes and areas in depressions in detail
💚 If you click on a depression with the point query tool, you get the depth in that precise point together with volume and area information
💚 With the depression map you can also describe depths, volumes, and areas in landscapes that you created

More lovely elevation data in Germany 🗺️ This year, SCALGO Live was updated with 1 m data for the entire Bayern.

We are updating SCALGO Live continuously as new data is being released in Germany. Governmental Data on water, transport, and energy supply, including DGM1, is being released as open data all over Germany. Each Bundesland is working to make this happen!

We had an interesting webinar on how to use hydrodynamic simulations and Modelspaces in surface water planning. 📽️
We were joined by two experts, Alun Roberts from Waterco and Thomas Rozario from .

Starting on 1st of January 2023, we made Modelspaces available to all municipalities as an inherent part of the standard SCALGO Live subscription. This means that municipalities can get much more out of the hydrodynamic flood simulations made by their consultant or water utility.

We have been working on perfecting the machine-learning model for land cover mapping. So far, we have developed detailed maps for Denmark, Sweden, and Finland 🦾

The method is very powerful and allows us to map land cover in very high detail and precision. We are working on rolling out detailed land cover in all countries where we have SCALGO Live, so stay tuned for more exciting land cover news in the new year.

France is the newest country in the SCALGO family and this year we had our first SCALGO Live webinar in French. We were happy to welcome Amélie Loubens from , who introduced how she uses SCALGO Live in her projects.
