Photos from Milky Way Biotech's post 13/06/2024

The day has finally come ๐Ÿ’ซ. We moved in the laboratory for the first time at DTU Skylab to perform our in-vitro study. This is one big step towards the development of gene therapy for lactose intolerance. ๐Ÿ”ฌ

On this mission we are having on board two wonderful DTU students with lots of experience and dedication to acquire proof of concept data. ๐Ÿ“š

Lucรญa Mompรณ Gisbert and Elisa Terenzi in collaboration with our science team members (Penille Jensen, Ioanna Chini, Angeliki Panetsou, Mario Alzamora, Patrik Szoboszlai) making enormous efforts in starting up our HEK-293 cell culture. We are all super excited to progress in the lab and make the cell culture produce Lactase enzyme as the main objective. ๐Ÿš€

We are going to update you regularly on the progress of our in-vitro study, so stay tuned. Thank you for the support for DTU Skylab, Jacob Martin Nielsen, Meat Tomorrow, and Thermo Fisher Scientific. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Let's discover together the 4 reasons that are responsible for this!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐‹๐š๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž ๐ˆ๐ง๐ญ๐จ๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž: The most common type of lactose intolerance. It occurs when the body produces insufficient amounts of lactase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose. Primary lactose intolerance is typically an inherited condition and is more prevalent in certain ethnic groups, such as individuals of African, Asian, Hispanic, or Native American descent.

2. ๐’๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ง๐๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐‹๐š๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž ๐ˆ๐ง๐ญ๐จ๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž: Occurs as a result of an underlying condition or injury that damages the lining of the small intestine, where lactase is produced. Common causes of secondary lactose intolerance include gastrointestinal infections, celiac disease, Crohn's disease, and chemotherapy.

3. ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐‹๐š๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž ๐ˆ๐ง๐ญ๐จ๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž: This is a rare, genetic form of lactose intolerance that is present from birth. Babies with congenital lactose intolerance are unable to produce any lactase and cannot tolerate breast milk or standard infant formulas that contain lactose.

In some cases, individuals may experience lactose malabsorption without exhibiting typical symptoms of lactose intolerance. While lactose is not fully digested, it is still absorbed to some extent by the body. This condition is often referred to as primary adult lactose malabsorption.

We often focus on the physical discomfort and dietary limitations of lactose intolerance. But have you considered its economic implications? ๐Ÿ’ฐ

For example, ๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž-๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ž๐ž ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ค can be up to double the price of regular milk in some countries. A liter of lactose free milk per week could add up to around $100 more to your annual grocery bill.

Over-the-counter ๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐š๐ฌ๐ž ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ can cost about $10-20 per month, totaling $120-240 per year.

Frequent ๐๐จ๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฌ to manage symptoms often add hundreds of dollars to annual healthcare expenses. By addressing lactose intolerance at its genetic root, we aim to eliminate the need for expensive alternatives and help individuals lead a more carefree life.
