ON ESSENTIALS — A CONVERSATION WITH JULIEN RENAULT

For industrial designer Julien Renault (), it’s about creating objects that bring together practicality and aesthetics, merging his pragmatic approach with a deep sensitivity for colour and materials. Renault’s distinctive design perspective is shaped by his diverse influences, extending beyond the confines of traditional design. As a photographer, he draws inspiration from everyday observations, details, behaviours, and global experiences.

Hailing from a background that traverses both French and Swiss design influences, Renault brings a fresh perspective to the field, favouring Swiss efficiency and sobriety over the romantic and sophisticated tendencies often associated with French design. His commitment to simplicity aligns with the principles outlined by design luminaries like Jasper Morrison and Sori Yanagi, emphasizing the beauty of anonymous objects and the pursuit of perfection in form and function. As Renault continues to garner recognition, including his recent nomination as Belgium’s Designer of the Year 2023, his work stands as a testament to the enduring impact of a design ethos rooted in essentialism and humility.

NOTES FROM THE NORTH — A FINAL RETURN TO ELLESMERE ISLAND

“One of the pure benefits of coming up here is that I get to come with my graduate students and colleagues and spend quality time with them. Because we live together. We get to know each other pretty well. A thing about aging in these ‘Alex families’ that I’ve really liked is the way that as I get older, I feel more comfortable imparting a little bit of wisdom to the younger generation. And that’s kind of a neat change.”

“I’m going to miss every single plant out there that I’ve come to know. I’m going to miss watching the birds, the seals, the bears. The science. The people, the laughs, and the sense of community every field season. The midnight sun and the ever-changing landscape. All of the adventures. I wish it didn’t have to end. But I’ve got it in me. In my spirit.”

Greg Henry, a tundra ecologist from the University of British Columbia, has dedicated his life to researching the effects of climate change in Arctic ecosystems for 44 years. But now, after over 40 summers and almost 10 cumulative years of incredible research and endless adventures under the midnight sun, he’s retired. It’s the end of an era.

This is the story of Alex Fiord, of a rich and relatively unknown regional history, of game-changing ecological and climatic research, of a passionate and charismatic scientist and mentor, and of his final goodbye – not only to his life’s work but to a place he’s called home.
Captured and documented by Jakob Gjerluff Ager () and Sofie Agger ().

"I aimed to build upon the traditions I encountered at Oxford while adapting them to a modern context. I believe that, as a foreigner, one must respect and embrace existing customs and traditions, yet also take the responsibility to reinterpret them in a modern context. Failing to do so could result in what I consider the least desirable outcome: a mere imitation, a melancholic replication of bygone eras."
