Automotive history for your wrist... The Arc II — Fordite series features dials handmade from "Motor City Agate". A byproduct of the automotive industry, Fordite is layers and layers of over-sprayed car paint that have cured together to form a rock-hard substance that is popular for its aesthetic properties. There are three types of Fordite dials crafted by Arcanaut: The “Groovy” variety seen here, cuts straight through the layers, revealing inimitable patterns of paints fused together. All of our Fordite watches are powered by Swiss-made automatic movements by Soprod, which are regulated in-house by our watchmakers in Copenhagen. One day, a little dizzy after breathing in the solvent-based paint vapour, James thought it would be fun to spray a few cars with the Mutagen to see what happened. Born to do it. Some people are just interesting. Take Anders. He's very tall and has extremely tetchy eyebrows. And Rob. He's very small and walks with all the elegance of a brick making its way through a lawnmower. And then there's James, AKA @blackbadger. Standing just over 93 cm tall, almost perfectly spherical, and covered in thick, glossy fur, the Badger has become something of a watchmaking myth in his own right. People speak of having met him as if they're not quite sure if they did in real life, or whether while experiencing the raddest DMT trip ever. Some people say he smells of roses; some mention a whiff of tar and regret. Some remember him as being as muscular as peak Arnold; others claim his clawed paws dangle from the end of limp noodles. One man swore under oath that Black Badger had turned up at his house (uninvited) sitting astride an old Indian motorcycle, yelling obscenities through his window before making off with his TV and wife; the judge, however, interpreted the testimonies differently and decided it was more likely the Badger arrived bearing freshly baked gifts and cotton candy, before furnishing his host with a wind-up radio and a pristine, unthumbed Playboy calendar from 1976. I guess we'll never know the truth (or how many truths about this mysterious furball there are), but one thing is sure: he is someone people want to meet so they can experience the legend firsthand. The old ones are the best. @blackbadger (one of our very own "old ones") explains that despite a decade in the watch industry, his position as the go-to collaborator for brands looking to spice up their materials offering was not always so assured. In fact, as a "non-watch guy", his entry into an industry he knew very little about came to pass through the good graces of others who believed in his previous work. But the Badger did what all good badgers must to survive... Badger-sitting. Is it preferable? Is it even possible? Rob's role as Head of Brand Development means he's responsible for managing the oftentimes unpredictable explosions of creativity emanating from the Badger Den in Gothenburg and moulding them into some kind of cohesive story. Having a lot of strings to your bow is almost always a good thing, but it can sometimes be hard to know which ones to draw on when you're tasked to perform a role right on the edge of your wheelhouse. There's no shortage of creativity in the Arcanaut team. It's the trait for which we're perhaps best known as a trio of watchmaking #pirates. However, it's essential that the daily grind is taken care of in the process. The day-to-day housekeeping of the brand and all aspects pertaining to its growth have to be overseen and managed even if it's not quite as exciting as blowing things up or grinding them to dust.
