Hard on the outside, harder on the inside. This is the hardest candy known to man. So hard, it is 100% inedible.

We know it looks good. Delicious, even. But it’s not for nibbling. Not even the edges (they are actually quite important bits). Every colour is a different flavour of paint, which range from the disgusting to the despicable and everything in between.

But beautiful it is, and a sweet treat befitting the most regal of wrists. You’ve heard of wrist candy before, but this is the hardest kind known to man.

Three years, seven months, twenty-six days, and four hours…

Anders looked out of the window. There was nothing there. In fact, there was so much nothing, it felt an awful like there was very much something there. But that’s just the feeling one gets in the absence of all things. The brain doesn’t like to be alone. It makes up something (often anything) so we don’t have to countence for one single second the possibility that the best company we might be able to hope for is — shudder — our own.

Ghosts. Made up. The Bogeyman? Total nonsense. Monsters under the bed? You should be so lucky… There’s a lot more nothing on Earth than humans are generally comfortable with; there’s a hell of a lot more nothing in Space, which is where we find the unshaven hero of this tale.

Anders Copernicus Brandt, designer, watchmaker, and intergalactic fugitive, wanted across three galaxies for, as the sobbing police officer termed it, “gross, gross indecency”...

In the heart of the forest, shielded by trees as old as the earth beneath them, stands a cauldron the size of a school bus. Guarded by a trio of trolls who dwell in this shady enclave due to the protection from the deadly sun it affords them, the cauldron bubbles and hisses endlessly.

It must be fed. Should it boil dry, the consequences would be dire, and not just for the trolls whose duty it was, on pain of death, to protect and preserve the fizzing soup within.

Hourly, the trolls replenished the mix. They would take it in turns to stalk the forest in search of fuel. Anything living would do. Mushrooms. Dear. Lost hikers. Anything and everything that could be reduced to a thick gloop with enough heat and time.

But nothing was preferred more than apples. Sweet, juicy, plump, ripe, green apples. There was an abundance of them nearby (which was good news for mapless wanderers) and the trolls would do what they could to keep the soup as appley as possible. Why? Because it smelled beautiful and tasted a damn sight better than boiled boots!

The bells, the bells! Oh, how they ring! Their terrifying cacophony spills throughout the city by night when its denizens want nought but to sleep. Who is that man that rings them so? What is he? A cruel, twisted, wretch, whose screams amount to but a whisper as they catch in his gnarled throat. He has but one way to share his pain — through the incessant (and inappropriately timed) ringing of bells.

Is he a monster or is he a messenger? Perhaps Old Klingili is somewhere between the two. Feared and revered by the people who live and work within earshot of his towering abode, perhaps one day he will descend to the streets and tell us all his tales of woe and wonder. Until then, we have but the bells. Oh, how they ring…

At the very edges of the known universe, where no creature we would recognise as such dares to tread, multi-coloured plumes of space dust, so thick and heavy they form cliffs and valleys through which rivers of cosmic juice flow, are populated by squishy Deep Space Worms, known for their interstellar shenanigans...

As you know, team Arcanaut likes to travel through space in search of tales anew. On one such deep space jolly, the trio happened upon said worms, who quickly became fast friends with our intrepid travellers (even if James ate one or two of them before he realised they were sentient).

And so team Arcanaut created a dial in their honour. The many cosmic blue divets on this dial recalled the wormholes created by our slippery friends when they burrow from one part of the universe to another.

A lot of what we do behind the scenes isn't obvious when you have the finished watch on your wrist. The rounds and rounds of prototyping can be a lot of fun, but also intense, draining, catastrophic, and, ultimately (when it does go well) euphoric.

What you see here are some of the 3D prints for the Tiger Sh'arc Glowpatch case back. The deeply engraved medallion will be hand filled with colourful Super Luminova, and protected from harm by a gasketed crystal. Once it's sealed up, it's sealed for good, so nothing can damage your glowing case back display!

We've had more than one handset in the past (we started with our "classic" pointer hands but quickly moved on to our current "Grand Paw" set), but for the Experimental line, we wanted to try something new.

Even though our hands are made from laser-cut steel, we decided not to heat blue them, but rather PVD coat them in an ethereal shade of "Ocean blue" that would be impossible to achieve via traditional means.

We think this colour will look great against the lume, which presents as white during the daytime but glows a marine-inspired teal at night.

While we design everything to work without colour (as many product designers do), its effective and sensitive application adds a finishing touch that can make or break a project.⁠

Given how seminal this model is for us (as the first model with a non-steel case), we have the feeling we're going to be looking at this Glowpatch for many, many years to come, so it had to work!⁠

The Tiger Sh'arc is and the Bonehead are our most ambitious models yet. We can't wait to show them in real life!

Experimenting with a new case and dial material, while also developing new hand treatments and the Glowpatch case back is a lot for a single release, but it has been rewarding and enriching, and we're thrilled to be able to send it out into the world.

The first thing we needed to do when it came to the development of the Tiger Sh'arc model was figure out exactly what the case material was going to look like (and how much it was going to cost us).

The short answers to both questions? "Awesome" and "a lot."

We were lucky to have the right contacts in the alloy industry, but still, finding the right mix that would be machinable, stable, and give us the right visual effect we had in mind was not easy.

Luckily, with watchmaking's foremost materials alchemist on board, we found a way.

Unsurprisingly, James knew a thing or two about creating new composite metals with titanium, having worked with a few in his ring-producing days as Black Badger.

He told us there was a particular blend we could modify that would yield a subtle, irregular wave pattern that could be finished to look like the skin of a tiger shark, with the pattern seeming to lurk just beneath the surface of the material.

A moment after the word "shark" escaped his lips, a smile broke out across them: that's what we'd call it. The Tiger Sh'arc. With that established, the journey began in earnest.

Anders turned our attention towards the case and, specifically, its material for the first time. If we weren't going to experiment with the dial, what could we do with the case instead?

We love titanium, but that wasn't quite wild enough (and far too easy to guarantee). James (Head of Materials Development) is never more than 28 metres away from Damascus Steel, so that was on the table but felt a little overdone.

But what about something that was both and neither? What about Timascus? That would be weird enough, right?

Something's looming beneath the surface...

The Tiger Sh'arc concept was born from the ashes of a previous model line we considered making central to the catalogue as early as September 2022.

During a "passionate debate" between Anders (Chief Designer) and Rob (Head of Brand Development) on a Gothenburg hotel balcony in March 2023, the idea for the Tiger Sh'arc started to take shape.

Rob was desperate to see a quieter dial in the well-known Arcanaut case shape but Anders was adamant (and right) that it wasn't Arcanauty enough...
