This day commemorates the entry of Brigham Young, the second president of the Church, and the first group of Mormon pioneers into Utah's Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. The Latter-day Saints left their homes in Nauvoo, Illinois, and traveled westward, seeking refuge from religious persecution.
The pioneers traveled across the plains of the United States and over the Rocky Mountains of Utah. They lost many who became ill and died during the winter months. When they reached Utah, the desolate valley was a pleasant sight to them. By the end of 1847, nearly 2,000 members had settled in the Salt Lake Valley.
A pioneer is someone who goes before, paving the way for others. How fortunate we are!
