Then you can complete your own recipe with our Salsa’s, Spaghetti Sauce, Enchilada Sauce, canned meats, canned veggies, and several different kinds of beans. Sweet Yellow Corn at Bernan’s Home Canned Foods!
Just sending out a reminder about our corn… We will be getting a shipment of delicious Yellow Sweet Corn from Cotacachi this week and you can still order some if you haven’t already …here is still time to add your order to my list. It will be available for pick up on Friday or if you want it delivered, Bernie can deliver it to you on Saturday.
Also, if there is anything else you would like, I can add that to your order as well. If you need a January Product list just send me an email and I will get one off to you right away.

Sweet Corn from Cotacachi
Bernie and I sure hope you had a Very Merry Christmas and are looking forward to a New Year that will bring us all back to a more normal and healthier 2021. We have stayed out of harms way keeping busy in the kitchen cooking and stocking and re stocking our pantry. Thank you all so much for keeping us busy and having confidence in our products.
We will be getting a good size shipment of Sweet Yellow Corn from Cotacachi around January 7th, so barring any problems we should have it available for you on the 8th. We love hearing all the reviews we get about this corn. It is the closest and freshest corn you can get here in Cuenca to any corn you have had in the US. When all our sales are complete, we will shuck, clean, cut, and can that same corn the following day and have it on our shelf in whole kernel and Cream Style corns. It’s fully cooked and ready to just heat and eat!
While it’s still Cherry Season we are still canning cherries as Pie Filling and just plain Cherries in Water. So far we have processed 3 cases but there will probably be another 3 cases in our future as well. We try to get all the pits out but just using a hand pitter sometimes we just can’t get them all. That comes with Home Canning. So be on the lookout or just check them as you use them in your recipes.

Thanks to all of you that have already ordered your pumpkin pies. I will be finishing my baking today and tomorrow so Bernie can deliver them on Tuesday. I won't be making extra pies to have on hand so please get your order to me by Tonight!.

If pumpkin pie isn't your favorite we also have all the fixins' for cherry, apple, and blueberry pies including the pie shells. I will not be baking the pies but have all the ingredients for you to bake them.

It’s Cherry Pittin time at Bernan’s Home Canned Foods!
Now that Cherry Season has arrived, we have been very busy at Bernan’s pittin’ and canning cherries! Today we are working on our second 22 lb. case and I have to say they this year they are very tasty! We have our very popular Cherry Pie filling available now for $4.00 a jar and just plain Cherries in Water for $3.00 a jar. We can just plain Cherries so you can use them in recipes that you don’t want all the sweetness in. One of our very good customers and friends just told me today that they like to put them in their oatmeal. I am making a cheese cake later this week and I will put some in it, or on top… Before this cherry season is over, we are hoping to have enough in stock to last throughout most of the year…. Bernie… better see about getting our pitter sharpened!!
Now that the rainy season is here as well, we are having lovely days but once that rain hits, it’s time to bring out the jackets! We did have a few really nice days and evenings and I hope to see more this year… but time is running out! In the meantime, our comfort foods are sure to hit the spot and warm you up. We have 6 different types of soup, beef stew, chili, (already made and a dry mix so you can make it yourself) and sauces to compliment any meal. After being a No Tell Rotel snob for so long, I can’t think of anything it wouldn’t taste good on. All those wasted years…

Hope everyone is keeping healthy and safe during this rainy season… Bernie and I are enjoying our time in the kitchen and also have some free time to get caught up with “other” things around the house. I thought it was about time to send a shout out that we are keeping the pantry full and if you don’t want to venture out… Bernie is still delivering on Tuesdays and Saturdays with Emilio.
We have gotten requests to bring back a couple of our “Special Order” items. The weather seems right so we will have these two items back on our regular list. The first is Pennsylvania Dutch Red Cabbage. The first time Bernie made this for me we were still in Phoenix. I had never eaten it before but the thought of hot red cabbage wasn’t something I looked forward to. Boy was I wrong. It’s the perfect blend of Red Cabbage, apples, and apple cider vinegar that had me asking for more. The other item is Borscht. Once again, I was the skeptic… I don’t like beets to begin with and beet soup made my face pucker… anyway a few years ago on one of our cruises we went to St. Petersburg and the tour took us to an Authenic Russian restaurant. What did they serve?... you guessed it! Russian Borscht. So I tried it and once again I was proved wrong. Your probably wondering just who requested these 2 items…lol Well it wasn’t me BUT this time I sure didn’t argue with Bernie when he suggested to put it back on our regular item list, I don’t mind having them in our pantry!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Family and Friends! Hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

If you are getting ready for Turkey day Bernan’s might be able to help you out a little. We have a Chicken Stuffing Mix similar to Stove Top. When I make it I will always add some sautéed onions and celery to it but it’s good by itself too, the seasoning packet has all the flavors that stuffing needs. We also have frozen precooked Pumpkin pies that are ready to eat. All you will need to do is thaw it out and Enjoy. I am asking that if you want a pie … PLEASE … have your order to me no later than Sunday Nov. 22nd. Last year I was baking on Thanksgiving morning and would much rather be watching parades! If you would rather make your own pies, we also have frozen pie shells.
What ever you are doing for Thanksgiving… we hope you enjoy yourselves.

If your Thanksgiving Holiday includes a Pumpkin Pie or pie shells from Bernan's, now is the time to get them ordered. Next week I will be spending a lot of time baking pies and freezing empty pie shells so get your order in soon. Bernie will be delivering orders on the 21st and 24th of November for Thanksgiving. Our Pumpkin Pies are fully cooked and frozen so all you have to do is thaw them out and enjoy.

A Holiday for Bernan’s
Bernan’s Home Canned Foods will be closed from November 4th and reopening on November 9th. We will be in full swing until we leave on the 4th to Puerto Lopez. Bernie will be delivering orders on the 3rd so if there is anything you would like just send me your order and it will be there before we leave.
With Thanksgiving coming up I will be making Traditional Homemade Pumpkin Pies. You can place your order for delivery or pick up. When I make my pies they are fully cooked and frozen. All you have to do is thaw them out and ENJOY! Last year I made approx. 30 pies for Thanksgiving.

Celebrating Oktoberfest? If you are, Bernan’s can help. We have been making Sauerkraut for almost 7 years now and along the way we just kept making it better. Unfortunately though, we can’t make it faster we do however, try to keep a good supply on hand. This is the time of year I like to make my “German Sauerkraut” with bacon, onions, and a little brown sugar to serve with just about anything. It’s easy to put together using our sauerkraut. It’s just plain sauerkraut with nothing added. We also have a lot of items that will make “your” recipes easier to put together.
I know this is not German, but for after dinner we have a couple of Adult Beverages that will warm you up with coffee or is delicious just to sip on. We have 750 ml. Kahlua (only 2 bottles left) for $17.50. Also by request we can make 750 ml. Irish Cream for $35.00, we only use Jameson Whiskey so it is the real deal! Our Irish Cream must stay refrigerated because of the real cream, that’s why we can’t keep it in stock.

What a difference 6 years makes!!

These days it seems like Mother nature isn’t sure what kind of weather she will give us. Days so warm you don’t even need a jacket but evenings so cold you have to turn your heater on…. On these cold evenings there is nothing better than some hot comfort soup or chili. We are known for our comfort food and ingredients that you can use to make your favorite dishes. We all have our very own favorites but they don’t have to take all day to make. Right now, we have plenty of Cream of Chicken and Cream of Mushroom Soup on hand, a variety of beans, sauces and don’t forget the dry mixes. We also have many items that all you have to do to eat them is heat them up. We even have a limited amount of canned yellow sweet corn (Whole Kernel or Creamed) from Cotacachi. We also have canned meats in jars. Have trouble getting your beef tender? Our canned Beef in Broth not only is delicious, but it’s fork tender, you can have delicious Beef Stroganoff in 20 minutes.

Customer Appreciation Sale At Bernan’s
Just a reminder that our Customer Appreciation Sale is still going at Bernan’s Home Canned Foods. We want to thank those of you that have ordered for making our sale a huge success! During the days that Bernie and Emilio aren’t delivering our foods, we are in the kitchen replenishing our pantry. It has been a lot of work but so far, we haven’t run out of anything except Corn and Sauerkraut. We are hoping to have those slots fully stocked again in 2 weeks.
We are often asked “How do you do it”?? … being semi-retired, and just the two of us… how do we manage to keep everything in stock?? Well I have to admit… Bernie is the main drive in the kitchen and he handles all the shopping and deliveries. He is up sometimes at 4:00 AM and starts cooking something. I’m up a little later, but my first stop is to see what he’s up to and of course my coffee… then it’s “Katie bar the door”! My main jobs are paperwork, writing the monthly flyer, taking and making sure orders are ready, constantly checking our inventory, and helping with whatever needs to be done with cooking, and clean up. After doing this for just over 6 years… we have a system that works for us and we even have days off! If we didn’t love what we do, that would make it a job… but since we do… it’s just what we do!

Just a short reminder that from today through Sept 11th we will be discounting our regular items 15%. This Customer Appreciation Sale is for all of you! It’s just our way to say “Thank You” for trusting and continuing to support our love of cooking and canning. Some days in the kitchen are more hectic than when we worked at our “real jobs” but that’s what makes us appreciate the not so hectic days.
What better time than now to check your pantry to see if you have any bare slots that need filling? Bernie and I will do our best to keep our pantry full of all of your favorites. He will be delivering but our delivery slots are filling up fast. It’s all good though because our friend Emilio said he will be happy to help if we need extra delivery days.
Some of your favorites include our peanut butter. It has become a top seller along with the best sauerkraut in Cuenca. It is consistent and I love to add a few things to it for one of my favorite side dishes. Cornbread Mix, a variety of pickles, canned meats, baked beans, No Tell Rotel…there are just way too many items to talk about here but if you need a new list I will be happy to send you one.

Customer Appreciation Sale -- Sept 1 – Sept 11
2020 will absolutely be a year to remember... Many of our friends and customers are always thanking us for "doing what we do". We are always grateful to hear how much you like our foods and how you use them... we can't thank you enough! All of you have given us not only something to do... but a purpose in our retirement. During our lockdown we were so busy some days we were working from dawn to dusk. Our busiest day was canning 98 jars... we barely found places to put them while they cooled! So now Bernie and I would like to say "THANK YOU" for trusting us and being the loyal friends and customers you are. We truly appreciate you and like Bernie likes to say " As long as we are enjoying what we are doing, and are able to keep on doing it... we will".
When Bernie and I came back from Vilcabamba in the begining of August...we decided to try to beef up our inventory so that we could have a Customer Appreciation Sale in September.. So starting September 1st and continuing for 11 days, through September 11th...we will be discounting all of our regular items 15%. We will fill all orders on a first come first served basis so if you plan on ordering please do it soon. Delivery options will be the same but you are welcome to come up to the pantry anytime. This sale does not include "Special Orders" or discontinued items because they just aren't readily available.

That's our stew on the cooling rack. Also that morning while Bernie was at the store shopping, I made 12 pie shells for the freezer.

We are back home and have a full pantry! After making sure there were no empty spots on our shelves, we were off to Vilcabamba. We had the most restful and enjoyable week away from our kitchen. We saw some of our friends while we were there… some we knew were there but most were total surprises. Izcayluma is a beautiful place to stay if you have never been. We will definitely be going back.
But until then it’s back to business! We are taking full advantage of our comfort foods right now that warm us up on these cold evenings. Our newest additions are our Condensed Cream of Chicken and Condensed Cream of Mushroom soups. They can be used just like the cans we all had on our shelves feeding families and making all of those wonderful concoctions that include creamed soups in the recipes. I like to experiment with them because you just never know when something works or REALLY works!

Bernie and I are having the absolute best time with our friends Pete & Leslie at Izcayluma Resort in Vilcabamba! 1 week is long enough for us to recharge but I will be ready anytime to come back in a moments notice. If you haven't been there you should try to go at least once!

Today we are off to "Izhcayluma" in Vilcabamba. Thanks for all the well wishes. We will be back all rested up and in the kitchen working on August 3rd. While we are gone I will be checking our email every evening and I will answer you even while on vacation.

News from Bernan’s Home Canned Foods
Hope your all staying warm on the cold evenings and mornings, once that sun disappears, I don’t know about you but I start hunting for sweats and a blanket, and something to warm me from the inside… A lot of our products do just that! I wouldn’t recommend these for breakfast but in the evenings, there is nothing better than a hot bowl of our soup or chili. You can make it from your recipe with a little help from our products or just heat up some of ours already to heat and eat!
Next Monday we will have a few items on our shelf that have been missing since our lockdown started. We will have plenty of Canned Creamed Sweet Corn and Canned Whole Kernel Corn. We canned our entire delivery of corn this month and we were told that we would get our next shipment in September. Whole Ears of Sweet Corn in September … mark your calendars! I will remind you when it gets closer. In the meantime, remember we will have it right here canned. Also, in place of our Salsa Verde we now have Green Tomato Salsa… We still can’t get tomatillos so when we were asked to make some using Green Tomatoes, we decided to give it a try. This morning Bernie picked up some very green tomatoes, this afternoon he did his magic and made Green Tomato Salsa with them. Yumm!! We will be selling 500 ml jars of this new salsa for $4.00.
Now for the last bit of news… I know everyone has gone through the same lock down that we have, well almost… Since it all started, we have been the busiest we have ever been. Sometimes scrambling to find jars, lids, and even some of the ingredients we needed to fill orders so you could keep your pantry stocked. Bernie and I decided it’s time for a little break… What better time to go to Izhcaylumba Hosteria in Vilcabamba! Bernie and I have never been there so we are going with our dear friends on July 25th for 1 week. We can warm up and just do nothing and relax. Bernie relaxing will be something for us to see… that is a rare occurrence indeed! I think 1 week is just what we need to get rid of Cabin fever and just warm up!
Our Condensed Cream of Chicken and Mushroom Soups have been great sellers. They are so versatile you can add almost anything to them and use them for your favorite casseroles. I do love having them on my shelf!
We will be keeping the pantry stocked and Bernie will be delivering on Monday and Friday next week. If you will be needing anything for this month be sure to send me your order and we will have it to you before we leave! Or if you prefer you can come by our pantry and shop! We have gotten a lot of calls and emails from friends wanting to know if we are open. I’m happy to say the answer to that is yes, Absolutely! Bernie and I have been very busy keeping our pantry as stocked as possible and delivering our products twice a week. Our Condo Administrator has lightened up a bit and once you pass through the spray station our guard will let you come up to shop. Last week we purchased another 12 kilos of beautiful Hatch Chilies from Linda Chase and spent all day Saturday Roasting, Peeling, De seeding, Dicing and Canning them. Now these chilies are on the shelf and ready to go. They are the real deal… Bernie and I would cook with them when we lived in Phoenix, AZ and I can’t tell you enough... how good they are. Getting them ready to sell was a lot of work but so worth it!

Our delivery days until further notice are still Mondays and Fridays. Having set delivery days makes things much easier on us and gives us time to make sure your order is complete. Our Condensed Cream of Chicken and Cream of Mushroom soups have been flying off the shelves. With the weather being as cold as it has been lately, you can easily make all your favorite casseroles. You may have to improvise and tweak your recipes a bit but not with these soups!

Baby it’s COLD outside!!
After living in Phoenix AZ for 40 years this cold weather still chills me to the bone! So, this time of year one of my favorite things to do for dinner is Chili! I love making a pot of chili using all of our chili fixins with our Chili Con Carne Mix… pair that up with some of our corn bread and a cool evening… comfort food doesn’t get any better than that! Now that we have hatch chilies, you can always add in a jar of them too.
Bernan’s has been known for comfort foods, things we grew up with and just can’t get here. Some of our best sellers include foods that all you have to do is heat and eat…Sloppy Joes, BBQ Pulled Pork, Ham & Beans, Baked Beans, Beef Stew, and any one of our Soups. If you feel like cooking, we also have foods that will make cooking your recipes a lot easier… our dry mixes, beans, sauces, tomatoes, vegetables, and even meat in jars that’s fully cooked and fork tender. If you feel like baking, we have some canned fruits and even frozen pie shells.
Most of our items were requests from you so we have you to thank for making our pantry shelves so full. When ever someone asks us “Can you make” something… we try. Some items didn’t turn out as well as we hoped but most have and are available to you in our pantry. We always enjoy a challenge! All of our foods are natural with no chemicals and you can even pronounce everything that goes in them!

Bernie and I have been very busy keeping our pantry as stocked as possible and delivering our products twice a week. We purchased 13 kilo of beautiful Hatch Chilies from Linda Chase and spent a whole day Roasting, Peeling, De seeding, Dicing and Canning them. Now these chilies are on the shelf and ready to go! They are the real deal… Bernie and I would cook with them when we lived in Phoenix, AZ and I can’t tell you enough... how good they are. Getting them ready to sell was a lot of work but so worth it!
It looks like our delivery days until further notice will be Mondays and Fridays. This all depends on the driving restrictions and when Emilio can drive for us. He has been such a huge help to us … We can’t thank him enough! Last Tuesday he and Bernie went out on 17 deliveries and made it back in 3 ½ hours…
