A "makana" is a traditional shawl worn by the indigenous women of the Azuay Province. For generations, families have passed down age-old patterns and techniques for dying spun wool. Some of the most traditional shawls are large, with huge, knotted borders designed to display names of places or symbols like birds. 🤩🔝

Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience, but it can also be challenging. The University of Cincinnati provides a helpful tool called the Cultural Adjustment Curve to understand the different stages of this process. However, not all students will experience the process in the same way. 🛫🌎📚🏫 The staff of International Programs at CEDEI is here to help you navigate this process and make the most of your study abroad experience in Ecuador. 🇪🇨 Take time to reflect on what is happening to you and around you, and don't be afraid to ask for help.
Due to the unique beauty of this cantón nestled in the Santa Barbara valley and the welcoming character of its people, Gualaceo is known as the "Azuayo Garden". It currently holds the title of Cultural Heritage of the Nation and serves as a communication bridge to the Ecuadorian east. Its main activities are agriculture, handicrafts and tourism. Gualaceo is also recognized for its designs that preserve a millenary identity, in addition to the manufacture of footwear and other leather goods. 💐👞🧣
Another wonderful flashback to 2017 with our Stanislaus State nursing students at the Inti photo studio, a place they'd only read about in Judy Blankenship's riveting book "Cañar: A Year in the Highlands of Ecuador". And this year, we're thrilled to welcome another group from the same esteemed university, eager to relive the magic and create new memories together! 🥳💚
Learn a new phrase 🇪🇨😎
"One of my favorite components of this study abroad program is that the backbone is cultural exchange, truly assisting one's comprehension of the traditions and history of this country." - Martina Maya, a student of Salisbury University during the Fall Semester in the Andes in 2017. ⛰️🌲
