Our little ones will soon be back in school but so often their education is interrupted due to economic scarcity. They simply cannot afford to buy their materials so will often just drop out of school. We at UBECI hope to provide scholarships for school kits with essential supplies for learning and promoting developmental growth thus avoiding these school dropouts rates which can result in further hardship for the children and their families.

UBECI Objective: The UBECI foundation works in outdoor markets all throughout Quito with over 620 street children, aged 1-16, providing them with empowering activities covering education, health, and society that enable their academic and social development. UBECI is especially important for the young women we work with who are far less likely to attend school than males. With your support, we can increase the resources we provide to the community and continue our work with one of the most at-risk populations in Ecuador.

Objetivo de UBECI: La Fundación UBECI se empeña en trabajar en mercados al aire libre en la ciudad de Quito. La fundación se enfoca en más de 620 niños de la calle, de edades entre 1 y 16 años, proporcionándoles actividades de empoderamiento que abarcan educación, salud y sociedad, lo que facilita su desarrollo académico y social. UBECI es especialmente importante para las mujeres jóvenes con las que trabajamos, ya que tienen una menor probabilidad de asistir a la escuela en comparación con los varones. Con su apoyo, podemos aumentar los recursos que ofrecemos a la comunidad y continuar nuestro trabajo con una de las poblaciones más vulnerables de Ecuador.

UBECI is always looking for volunteers, and are open to people with all levels of skill. Our volunteers can choose between our Street Children Program, where you will help run recreational and educational activities for children, or Administrative Support, where volunteers help manage UBECI’s social media, apply for grants, and help reach fundraising goals. We accept volunteers both in country or remote.
Ecuador is a beautiful country with lots of options to explore on your days off, from the Amazon, to mountain trekking, to the Galápagos Islands. Volunteering with UBECI offers the opportunity to make a real impact in the lives of vulnerable children in Ecuador, and have the adventure of a lifetime.

At UBECI we plan all of our activities to help the children develop “habilidades blandas”, or soft skills. For example, organized games help develop listening skills, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. Crafts also help develop listening skills, along with problem solving skills, sharing, self confidence, and time management. Throughout our time with the children our team and volunteers use a variety of tools, such as positive affirmations, or individual attention, to help build self-confidence and emotional intelligence. All of these ‘soft skills’ are incredibly important for the healthy development of a child, and will set them up for success as an adult. Most of these children do not have many opportunities in their daily life to learn and practice these skills in a consistent way. For this reason, all of our activities are designed with these skills in mind!

At UBECI one of our daily activities with the children is reading a story. This is important to expand the imagination of the children, and to practice literacy skills. Story time is also a great opportunity for the children to get to know our volunteers.

Our workshops for mothers and women begin in a few weeks! We are currently speaking to women in the markets to raise awareness, and encourage more women to join the program. Our workshops cover topics such as women’s rights, parental rights, domestic violence, emotional development, and entrepreneurship. At UBECI we believe in an intergenerational approach to addressing childhood poverty, which includes supporting mothers and vulnerable women in the community. Many of these women never completed formal education, so in December the women will graduate and receive a certificate to recognize their commitment to educational and personal growth.

At UBECI every day starts with hand washing! Not only does this encourage good hygiene habits, it also gives our staff and volunteers an opportunity to interact one-on-one with each child. This is an opportunity to provide a positive interaction with each child to promote their individual self-esteem and self-worth.
Most of the children do not have consistent access to basic sanitation and hand washing facilities, so this important part of our programs helps contribute to the Sustainable Development Goal #6: Ensure availability of water and sanitation for all.

It is a great day for UBECI and our children!

Our little ones are back to school, many times their education is interrupted by economic scarcity, since they cannot buy their materials. UBECI, as support to avoid school dropouts, provides our children with the school materials necessary for their education. In this way, school dropouts are avoided, being a great help for families in the southern markets of Quito.

Our program doesn’t just benefit our children, it benefits the parents as well! We were picking up our children from their mother’s market stalls when we discovered that one of our little boys, had brought his little brothers with him.

We asked his mother if she would like us to look after all three children, and she was very happy to say yes! With three children to look after, she can neither give them the care and attention they need, nor do her job properly. With someone else looking after her little ones, she was free to sell her stock and hopefully bring economic benefit to the whole family.

Another way UBECI helps our children of the markets is by providing support and help to the mothers. It is important for both mother and child that the mother feels confident in her abilities and feels like she has the strength and knowledge to help her children. Not only knowledge, but it is important that the mother understands her rights as a woman, understands her own identity and feels emotionally empowered to be able to care for her children properly. UBECI helps mothers to empower themselves and take better care of their children.

At UBECI we celebrate International Right to Know day everyday, as everyday we go into the markets and disseminate knowledge to our children. Teaching them how to play, create and learn. Just as anybody else in the world, the children who work at the markets have the right to education and knowledge so we ensure the children get access to these basic human rights.

Not only do we ensure that our children have access to knowledge, we also run workshops with the mothers. Often the mums we work with lost the opportunity to study and can often feel like they don't have the 'know how' to help their children. UBECI is there to support and help the mothers feel knowledgeable and confident again.

UBECI aims to do our ‘little bit of good’ by striving to counteract the social injustice that our children face. Being children at risk they have less access to education and basic human needs. Here at UBECI we understand the importance of democracy, we listen to the opinions and ideas of the volunteers to determine new activities we run with our children.
We also strive to teach our children to respect each others thoughts and opinions and to listen to what each other has to say. We do this through collaborative learning and play. Our boys and girls learnt the importance of physical health by keeping active through recreational activities, such as dancing. Dancing is a good way for the children to have fun whilst also building muscular strength, flexibility and good motor skills. Here our children were enjoying dancing to one of their favourite songs with our volunteers.

“Let’s all do the limbo, na na na na hey! Na na na na hey!”

Did yo know...? Doing the limbo was a fun and interactive way for our boys and girls to not only exercise and increase flexibility, something that is really important when children are growing and developing, but also to interact and support each other. When all the boys and girls are experiencing the same challenge, it allows them to start to relate to each other and understand what the other might be feeling. As the limbo bar started to lower, our boys and girls were cheering each other on, supporting each other in their quest to clear the bar without touching it! Playing simple games like this one can help our children interact with each other, helping form bonds and build friendships, skills that are important for the children to develop to progress through their lives.

This week we teach children to play “frozen” – a very energetic game! The teachers were already tired, but which the children ran even faster!
At UBECI we try to teach the children useful things like fine motor skills, emotional intelligence, and social skills. But we never lose sight of the fact that one of our goals is to give them moments of normal childhood, where the aim is simply to have fun.

Many of our children are excited to grow up and be just like the teachers. They want to be teachers, doctors and many more options. Ubeci wants her children to have the opportunity to achieve and encourage their dreams.

Our volunteers and our teachers recently brought sunshine into the heart of our little ones. It was the birthday of some of our little ones, and they were very happy when everybody sang Happy Birthday! They were even more excited when the UBECI staff gave them a present. They ripped off the paper to find a favorite toy. Their face broke into a smile of happiness!

It’s very important for us to develop relationships between UBECI and families of our girls and boys, we hope to have a lasting influence on the children’s lives.

After finishing their learning tasks, ours girls and boys wanted to play soccer! We created a goal with our bags, and divided the whole group – volunteers as well! – into two teams. The game ended with lots of hugs, and laughter. It was a great moment of fun and relaxation after all our hard work.
