🦋Wituk, is a cherished fruit of the Amazon, traditionally used by indigenous communities for its natural dye properties.
✨Beyond its vibrant hues, wituk holds deep cultural and spiritual significance. It’s more than a beauty enhancer; it’s a symbol of connection to nature and ancestral wisdom. For many indigenous people, using wituk is a way to honor their heritage, embrace their identity, and maintain a harmonious balance with the natural world. 🍃💚
🍃Today, we visited Pakarina, an expert in wituk, who has been working on her project for many years. She taught us the process of how this natural dye is extracted from the fruit 🍈

At her center, Doña Pakarina offers traditional spa treatments and teaches arts and crafts with the aim of preserving Kichwa cultural knowledge. Together we made some ceramics and partook in a river bath with choco-therapy and medicinal flowers and herbs 🌸🌿

🔴Achiote holds cultural and symbolic significance for the Huaorani people. 🎭It might be used in rituals, ceremonies, or special occasions as a way to connect with their ancestral traditions and honor their cultural heritage.
🎨Among their beliefs is that of using the color red to mark their faces and weapons for hunting animals🐆. They believe that the color red is good luck and keeps evil spirits away.✨

Inti Raymi - Fiesta del Sol ☀️ is one of the most traditional festival celebrations in the Ecuadorian Andes.
🌾This time coincides with the harvest season and the end of an Andean agricultural cycle. This tradition is a way of giving thanks to the sun and asking it to come to Earth during the summer.
🍂The Inti Raymi festival also focuses on giving back to mother earth or "Pacha Mama". This is a show of gratitude for the great harvest, and to encourage her to start a new strong agricultural circle👩🏽🌾
✨Gratitude is celebrated with the presence of music and dance, and a cultural show.🎭

✨Today it’s the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, it holds a great significance as it raises awareness about the threats of desertification.
🍂There is an urgent need for sustainable land management practices to restore degraded land and create a greener future🍃

🛖The Kichwa indigenous people is the most populous ethnic group in the Ecuadorian Amazon region, they tend to be farmers and healers.
🍂We want to introduce you to some our longest partners:
👨🏽🌾Clemente: he is an expert in the chakra, agriculture, ancestral traps, plant medicine and traditional food and drinks preparation.
👸🏽Flora: she is a kichwa midwive that works with Amupakin (traditional birthing centre). She specialises in natural, vertical births using traditional tools and techniques, including plants and chants.
🍃They all are experts with the use of medicinal plants and fruit trees along with the planting and harvesting of products like yuca, guayusa, banana, coffee and cocoa.

🧐What do you know about Guayusa?
🌿Guayusa is a sacred plant that has been consumed for more than 1,000 years by the indigenous people of te ecuadorian amazon as an energizing and antioxidant drink.
🛖Waysa Upina is the ceremony that the indigenous people practice. They get up at dawn to prepare the guayusa drink, the whole family gathers around a fire where they share their dreams. The abuelos tell stories and transmit their cosmovision and knowledge to the youngest.

🍃She came from the US for the Climate Change internship :) As part of the training days, we took her to Amupakin so she can learn about the chakra, the medicinal plants the mamas have there and use for the care of pregnant women and new born babies🤰🏽
✨We ended up the day with a limpia and of course a delicious lunch in the market🐟

🌊Nothing better than spending a hot day in the river.
🧖🏻♀️We found natural clay of many colors and turned the moment into an Amazonian Spa. There are multiple benefits of clay for skin and hair, this time we wanted to detoxify our skin and make it smoother.
🍃The best part? Completely free, an amazing view and good company
🪵Our interns visited a Huaorani family in the Huao territory.
🍃There, they learned about their daily lives, medicinal plants, ancestral medicine, cosmovision, their history and how they were affected by the oil companies.
🧍🏽♂️Thanks to Carlos, who took them to walk around the jungle in this amazing Huaorani territory.
