Tallinn Treff Visual Theatre Festival
Visual theatre festival in Tallinn, Estonia organized by Estonian Theatre for Young Audiences.
25th to the 28th of May, 2023 visual theatre performances from all over the world will be on the stages of Tallinn for the amazement and wonder of the audience.
Well well well!
Yesterday the board of the Estonian Theatre for Young Audiences Foundation elected Leino Rei, the head of Tallinn Treff festival, as the new head of the theatre.
"The decision was based on the idea that the Youth Theatre stands on strong foundations, which means that in the coming years we do not expect so much change as a continuation and completion of what has been done. Above all, we believe that the theatre needs creative peace and stability, which could be a breeding ground for new, good ideas," said Merju Künnapuu, chairwoman of the board.
According to Künnapuu the theatre has reached a very good creative form, achieved significant public interest, received recognition, and maintained a good internal atmosphere and work culture on a daily basis. "Leino Rei has been actively involved in all of this for years, so he has a good overview with practical skills to effectively continue the work," she explained.
Leino Rei sees his primary mission as theatre director as ensuring that the daily rhythm of life of the theatre continues in creative peace and with the same intensity. "At the same time, exciting challenges lie ahead of us in the near future, both in terms of visual theatre education and internationalisation. It is an opportune moment to take a deep breath and then continue this journey together with our very strong team," he added.
Leino Rei will assume the role of theatre director from mid-April onwards. Until then, the current theatre director, Joonas Tartu, will continue to fulfill the duties of the position.

In Montreal, Canada, the Festival International de Casteliers is taking place, bringing together puppet theatre performers and festival organisers from around the world.🌎
The Montreal area is home to nearly forty puppet theatres, and the second photo shows what a "puppet theatre market" looks like, where local theatres present their productions to festival organisers.
Whether Canadian productions will make it to Tallinn Treff first or the Baltic visual theatre will reach Canada before, only time will tell. Nevertheless, the director of Treff Leino Rei, with the support of Estonian Ministry of Culture, together with Louise Lapointe, the artistic director of Casteliers, have mapped out mutual expectations and possibilities at the festival, and there certainly is hope.
With the support of Estonian Ministry of Culture, Joonas Tartu, general manager of Estonian Theatre for Young Audiences, and Leino Rei, manager of festival Tallinn Treff, are exploring the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival.🎭
This is the largest festival dedicated to this art form in North America, lasting for 11 days and attracting nearly 14,000 visitors.
During the meeting with the festival's artistic director, Blair Thomas, the foundation for cooperation was laid, and it was agreed that the 2027 festival program will have a focus on the Baltic region! 👏

Tegemist on suurima sellele kunstivormile pühendatud festivaliga Põhja-Ameerikas, mis kestab 11 päeva ja mida külastab ligi 14000 inimest.
Kohtumisel festivali kunstilise juhi Blair Thomasega pandi alus koostööle, mille kohaselt on 2027. aasta festivali programmis Balti fookus! 👏

Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes will showcase the visual theatre of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania as one of its focal points in the programme of the festival taking place in 2025!
“We have been working for a long while towards the goal of bringing the programme of the Baltic visual theatre to this festival; and now we can say that the deal has been made in this respect. During the meeting with Pierre-Yves Charlois, the artistic director of the festival, it was established that the festival taking place in 2025 will include the Baltic states as one of its focal points, which is creating opportunities to take productions from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to the world stage,” said Leino Rei, manager of the International Visual Theatre Festival Tallinn Treff. Rei, who is currently participating in the Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes, led the organising of the Baltic Showcase, a festival presenting the Baltic visual theatre, which took place in May 2022 in Tallinn. The aim of the festival, which is organised jointly by the visual theatre networks of the three Baltic states, is to present the Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian visual theatre to the audiences of the Baltic states as well as to the organisers of international festivals; and by doing so, to open the door to the international stages for the Baltic theatre folk.
The next festival Baltic Showcase will take place in 2024 in Lithuania.

At some point, each of us has probably found an interesting object – for example, from a storage room or from a beach after a storm – and wondered what its story could be. 🧐
In this week’s one minute lecture, Taavi Tõnisson (actor at Estonian Theatre for Young Audiences) explains how random everyday objects are the main means of expression and play in object theatre. ☂️☕🧂🎱
