… هناك من يرى المشهد الكلي بعين أنهكها كثرة ما رأت، ينظر إلى أولئك وهؤلاء ويدركه العجز عن تحمل الأوضاع وعن تغييرها في الوقت ذاته يتألم لألم طرف من الأطراف ويصيبه الحنق لبلادة طرف آخر، ويُسقمه العبتُ الذي يتسيد الأجواء، وتحبطه قسوة الرؤية ويعمه فساد البصيرة، فيقرر عزل نفسه عن الجميع واعتزال فضاء التفاعل؛ يصنع قوقعته الخاصة ولا يستقبل من المؤثرات إلا ما يصطفي ويرضى. تلك عزلة قوامها ضيق ويأس وكآبة وجوهرها الاعتراض على ما هو كائن ربما يمثل هؤلاء المعزولين بنصف إرادة ونصف إجبار، شبان وشابات كثر، تصاعدت طموحاتهم وجاوزت الأسقف كلها، وانطلقت قبل سنوات إلى وسع السماء، ثم تهاوت فجأة من عل، دون أن ينتبه أحدهم إلى دلائل السقوط المروع، لأ عتاب إذا، وقد كان الحلم أكبر من التفكير في احتمالات ضياعه، لكن عزل الذات والانعزال لا يوفران البديل المناسب ولا يقطعان أشواطًا إلى الأمام.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐲 - 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬

… There are those who observe this scene with eyes wearied by seeing; as they watch they are gripped by a sense of their inadequacy either to bear it or to change it. They feel the pain of one of the sides and are struck with anger at the foolishness of the other, sickened by the absurd state of affairs, frustrated by the harshness and depravity of what they see, so they choose to segregate themselves from others and insulate themselves from all interaction, creating a private shell which accepts no outside stimuli but those which they have selected and approved. It is an isolation based on distress, despair, and depression, its essence an objection to the status quo. These people perhaps represent a half-voluntary, half- coerced isolation. Many young men and women, whose aspirations went through souls are imprisoned and do not feel or take pleasure in their freedom.

Job Announcement: Librarian / Archivist

The Librarian / Archivist archives, maintains and updates the library index sheets, follows up on and updates the Public Inter-Library Online Technology (PILOT) online catalogue, and develops public and semi-public programmes related to the CIC library and archives. They archive, maintain and update the physical and electronic archives of CIC’s programmes, events and facilities, and are responsible for books sales at CIC and book fairs. They also help facilitate access to the library and archive materials for the CIC team and visitors.

Job details
Working hours: 11 am - 7 pm. part-time, 3 or 4 days per week (60% - 80%)
Location: Contemporary Image Collective - CIC, 2 Etehad El-Mohamein El-Arab St, Garden City, Cairo.
Starting date: 1 December 2024
Duration: 1 year, renewable

Applications close today for the «Paper and Performance» programme!

«Case study of failed/faded institutions» The third workshop of the programme mixes between the modes of research and inquiry. Philosophical contemplation is situated in history, where the history of the subject might not be the topic, but the subject is never without its history. We trace this through studying stories and artefacts of institutions that are no longer running, or semi functioning. Through fictioning, we explore the tension between research methodology, and poetic interpretation. In the process of fictioning we find ourselves in the face of a failure and its different shapes. Where does the knowledge we gather take us? Are references stunting our movement or inspiring it?

The form and rendering of a creative work articulate its various interpretations and carry the seeds of its narration and performative potentials. During the second workshop of the «Paper and Performance» programme «Written to be Performed: Gal-ga-la» we explore a wide spectrum of writing and performing that accompanies diverse practices in art spaces, or alongside artworks narrating the cycle of dismantling and building on it.

The paper we refer to is a versatile medium that takes shape as artist statements, catalogues, labels, performance programmes, literature, scripts and drafts, but also addresses ephemera, historical documents, and legislative, artistic, or bureaucratic roles a piece of paper can play. It witnesses the beginning and finalisation of a project. It draws a dramatic yet fundamental contrast between text and speech.

«Paper and Performance» programme begins with «Newsroom» a workshop that is designed to expand on the various significations and representations one single topic can instigate, and the opportunities this presents to change our position or perspective. It introduces tools of journalism paired with a news event that is used as a starting point. We wonder, how can a history of journalism be a mirror of a socio-political sphere of conflict? Exploring notions of urgency, field work, speculation, and creative representation.concluded with a presentation through print.

الـ(زين) مطبوعة مصنوعة بشكل مستقل وبتكلفة منخفضة وعدد نسخ صغير للتداول وليست محدودة بحجم أو نسق أو محتوى محدد. يمكن أن تأخذ أي شكل يعجبك وتحمل محتوى متنوع من السياسة أو القصص الشخصية أو الفن التجريبي.. إلخ.

أحد الأشكال الأكثر شيوعًا للـ(زين) هو استخدام ورقة واحدة يتم طيها عدة مرات أو قصها لتكوين صفحات.
الصورة لـ(زين) يوضح الأشكال المختلفة الممكنة من طي A3. الطباعة بالبرتقالي الفلورسنتي بالريزوجراف واللون الأسود بالزيروكس (تصوير المستندات). تم تصميمها خلال التحضير لورشة صناعة الـ(زين) في يوليو الماضي.

A zine is an independently made, low circulation and low cost publication that follows a do-it-yourself approach, that’s not limited to format, size or content which suggests easy distribution. It can look any way you like and feature anything from radical political writings, personal stories to experimental art.

One of the most common forms of zines is made from a single sheet of paper that is folded or cut in various ways to create pages.
The image shows a zine demonstrating the different folding possibilities of an A3 sheet. The fluorescent orange print is done using risograph printing, while the black was produced with Xerox (photocopying). It was designed during the preparation for the Zine-making Workshop last July.

We work with a choice of different papers, including archival paper, and print on roll, which allows for large size printing up to a maximum width of 110 cm.

شكرًا لكل من شاركنا في النقاش بالأمس في «مر هذا اليوم: لقاء مع الفنانات والفنانين». تطرق الحديث إلى محاولات تجربة التفكير الجماعي نحو بناء سياق عرض مشترك، ومعنى أن تكون الأعمال المعروضة في حوار داخل مساحة العرض. كذلك، تناول النقاش الاهتمام بالعمل مع وعلى التاريخ والأرشيف في اللحظة الراهنة في المؤسسات الثقافية المحلية المختلفة، ومساءلة اسباب النظر إلى الماضي وعلاقة الفن بالمجال العام.

الـ(زين) مطبوعة مصنوعة بشكل مستقل وبتكلفة منخفضة وعدد نسخ صغير للتداول وليست محدودة بحجم أو نسق أو محتوى محدد. يمكن أن تأخذ أي شكل يعجبك وتحمل محتوى متنوع من السياسة أو القصص الشخصية أو الفن التجريبي.. إلخ.

أحد الأشكال الأكثر شيوعًا للـ(زين) هو استخدام ورقة واحدة يتم طيها عدة مرات أو قصها لتكوين صفحات.

عندما نقوم بطي الورقة نصفين، يظهر أمامنا ثلاث صفحات أو أسطح: صفحة أمامية وخلفية وداخلية. لن تتمكن من رؤية الصفحات كلها في آن واحد ولكن يمكن تجربتها أو اكتشافها في تسلسل زمني، ما يتيح اقتراح رتم للقارئ (مثل مسرحية في أربع فصول) استعانة بالصور أو النصوص أو الملمس، لنصل إلى تصور شامل للتلقي.

خلال الورشة ندعو المشاركين للتعرف على أساليب مختلفة للمناورة مع ورقة A3 لإنتاج (زين). نستعير من تاريخ فن فلاكسيس „إيفنت سكورز/مدونة الحدث“ كنقطة بداية أو إطار للعمل والإنتاج.

إيفنت سكورز(مدونة الحدث) هي سلسلة من التعليمات أو الإقتراحات لأفعال مستعارة من الحياة اليومية والبيئة المحيطة يتم إعادة تخيلها في شكل عرض أدائي أو اقتراح لحدث. قد يقوم الفنان بكتابة وأداء التعليمات أو تركها لتوظيف أو قراءة أخرى لفنانون آخرون من المجموعة أو من الجمهور.

الورشة متاحة لكل من يهتم بالنشر وصناعة المطويات ومتحس للتجريب ولديه بعض الخبر في الكتابة أو صناعة الصورة مثل الفوتوغرافية والرسم أو كولاج.

يعود كل مشارك بصحبة ١٠ نسخ من الـ(زين).

A zine is an independently made, low circulation and low cost publication that follows a do-it-yourself approach, that’s not limited to format, size or content which suggests easy distribution. It can look any way you like and feature anything from radical political writings, personal stories to experimental art.

A common way to make a zine is using one sheet of paper that is folded multiple times and then scored/cut to make pages.

When we fold a sheet of paper in half, we are left with three surfaces: a front, a back and an inside. These surfaces cannot be viewed simultaneously but can be experienced in time by turning the page or unfolding. The act of unfolding and turning is a tool to pace the reader (like a play with four acts) using images, texts and textures to create a comprehensive landscape in view ready to be experienced.

During the workshop participants will learn different ways to maneuver an A3 paper to make a one page zine, they are asked to follow an event score as a guide or a prompt to produce content for the zine.

Event scores are a set of instructions, a proposal for certain actions that borrow from our everyday life and objects (environment and surroundings) that are reimagined as a performance or as a suggested happening. The instructions can be carried out by the artist who wrote them or left to be repurposed by other artists ( from the group attending or the public)

This workshop is open for individuals interested in DIY modes of publishing and zine-making. This workshop welcomes anyone eager to experiment and has some experience in writing, image making like using photography, drawing or even collaging.

Each participant will go home with 10 copies of their zine.

This workshop is one day and limited to 5 participants.

حين تُشفى الروح من سمومها (تداوي ايميلي روته)، المستند على كتابات، مذكرات وخطابات ايميلي روته، المولودة سلامة بنت سعيد بن سلطان (١٨٤٤-١٩٢٤)، أميرة عمان وزنجبار، كما وردت في كتاب “أميرة عربية بين عالمين: ذكريات، رسائل العودة، تكملة للذكريات، عادات وتقاليد سورية” لـ إمري ڤان دونزل، الذي نشر عام ١٩٩٣.

دعاء علي منذ ٢٠٠١، اعتمدت دعاء علي في ممارستها الفنية على استكشاف مفاهيم الجنون والتجلي كأدوات لاختراق مناخ القسوة والعنف من خلال العمل على النصوص التاريخية والأدبية واستخدام وسائط فنية مثل تصميم الرقص والرسم والتصوير والنحت والفيلم.

‏Only when all the poison has gone (The healing of Emily Ruete) is based on the writings of Emily Ruete, born Salamah bint Said bin Sultan, Princess of Oman and Zanzibar (1844-1924), as introduced by Emeri van Donzel in An Arabian Princess Between Two Worlds: Memoirs, Letters Home, Sequels to the Memoirs, Syrian Customs and Usages, published in 1993.

‏Doa Aly Since 2001, my practice explores the concepts of madness and manifestation as tools to pe*****te the atmospheres of cruelty and violence, mostly through adaptations of literary and historical texts, using the mediums of choreography, drawing, painting, sculpture and film.

«This morning, this evening, so soon» is an exhibition and public program on text-based practices and historical studies. It is open daily (except Fridays) until Saturday, 6 June, from 12 to 9. pm.

«بحثًا عن لقطة تأسيسية»، محمود يوسف، تجهيز فيديو على قناتين، ۳۳ دقيقة ٤۰ ثانية، صور فوتوغرافية، نص، ۲۰۲٤

يتأمل العمل في علاقات الذات مع المكان والآخر والمساحات المشتركة، يستخدم النص والفيلم الوثائقي وصور أثناء التحضير للفيلم ولعملية الترميم. يجرب العمل تداخلات مختلفة للذاكرة في سردية للذات وسردية للمكان محاولًا إيجاد نقطة تأسيسية داخل مساحات عتبيَّة متقاطعة. يفكر المشروع في علاقة اللغة بالصورة، وفي ماهوية الفرد والعلاقات الاجتماعية.

محمود يوسف مهندس بحري ومصور سينمائي وفنان بصري يقيم ويعمل بين الإسكندرية والقاهرة. يتسكشف في أعماله جوانب مختلفة من المساحات العامة. درس صناعة الأفلام في مدرسة جيزويت للسينما وشارك في برنامج بهنا للفنون البصرية، وحصل على منحة آفاق للفنون البصرية في ٢٠٢٣. و على منحة إنتاجية من مؤسسة أضف .xyz لمشروع «بحثًا عن لقطة تأسيسية».

«Searching for an establishing shot», Mahmoud Youssef,Two channel video installation, 33 min 40 sec, photographs, text, 2024

The work contemplates the relationship between self, space, and other, and common spaces using a text, documentary, and images of a site visit while preparing to film and in the process of restoration. It experiments with various overlaps in memory, in a narrative of the self, and a narrative of space, trying to find an establishing point within liminal and intersectional spaces. The project contemplates the relation between language and image, and the essentialism of the individual, and social relations.

Mahmoud Youssef is a naval architect, cinematographer, and visual artist, lives and works between Alexandria and Cairo. His work tends to explore various aspects of public spaces, he studied film making at Jesuit film school, and took part of Behna visual arts program. He received the AFAC Visual Arts Grant in 2023 and a production grant from the ADEF for his project «Searching for an establishing shot».

دعوة لحضور لقاء مع فنانات وفنانين معرض «مر هذا اليوم»، آية صبري، ودعاء علي، وإيمان عفيفي، ومحمود يوسف، وتسنيم جاد في حوار مع منسقة المعرض بتول الحناوي. المعرض ختام برنامج تطوير المشاريع الذي استضافه مركز الصورة المعاصرة ويسرته دعاء علي منذ فبراير الماضي عن الممارسات الفنية المبنية على نصوص ودراسات تاريخية.

سنشارك أسئلة حول الأعمال المعروضة والكتابات المحيطة بها لاستكشاف عملية الإنتاج في حوار مع الجمهور. خلال جلسات البرنامج ظهرت موضوعات مثل مفهوم الإدراك والمادة الفنية ومواقع العمل والوقت ومحاولات البحث عن الشخصية الرئيسية للعمل الفني. ما هي الأشكال المختلفة لاستخدام الأدب والنصوص كأدوات لتفكيك أو بناء السرديات؟ كيف يمكن مشاركة العمل على مشاريع فنية أن يكون إشارة للزمن التاريخي أو خطوط زمنية وسياقات متعددة وما يليها من فهم مواقع التفاعل مع الحاضر والمستقبل؟

We invite you to join us for a talk with «This morning, this evening, so soon» exhibition artists Aya Sabry, Doa Aly, Iman Afify, Mahmoud Youssef, and Tasneem Gad in conversation with exhibition curator Batool Elhennawy. The exhibition is the result of a studio program facilitated by Doa Aly which ran at CIC from February 2024 exploring unfinished long term projects related to text-based practices and historical studies.

The artists will ask each other questions from the exhibited works and writings surrounding them, taking the process back to a conversation with the audience. During the studio sessions, themes related to modes of perception, materiality, sites of work, time and to trying to find the subject of the work emerged. What different ways do we approach text and literature as a tool of deconstruction or narrative building? How can working together on different projects be a testament to a historical time or multiple timelines and contexts, and a potential interaction with the present and future?
