Found this gem on the World Wide Web the other day. It’s near the end of dead week here at UC Berkeley. Stress and sitting at a desk all day long to study make the challenge of good blood sugars even more difficult. But we can do this! We are smart, capable, and strong.

Starting this chapter this semester proved difficult between balancing a busy schedule and missing the schools Registered Student Organization deadline which would have given us access to classrooms for meetings and other tools to spread the word. Fear not!! We will hit the ground running after winter break and make this a fun, inclusive, positive group (who actually have meetings instead of just an instagram, haha!).

In the mean time, here are some tips, and good luck with finals:

•caffeine spikes blood sugar, curious why your number is high all day? Try bolusing for your caffeine!
•Stress spikes cortisol, which spikes your blood sugar. Make sure you find ways to de-stress. Whether that is cooking a nice meal, going for a walk, or watching some funny videos.
•sitting at a desk can make you insulin resistant, try going for a 5-10 minute walk after meals to get the blood flowing, and the insulin working! Better yet, exercise!
•my personal favorite: take a study break to do 100 jumping jacks, or 10 pushups, a few deep breaths and you’ll feel temporarily revived. I once got 20 people to join me in a quick exercise outside the library!

MOST IMPORTANTLY, you and I are only human. Don’t get too down on yourself. If you study hard and try your best, there’s nothing more you can ask for. One grade does not define you. Nor do 10 grades define you. I know it’s hard, but try to keep perspective. Tell yourself this:

**It is only life, don’t take things too seriously”

Good luck, study hard, and may good blood sugars be with you! Reach out if you need anything or want to destress, YOU GOT THIS.

We are slowly but surely building a fun community. Make sure to reach out to use so we can connect. This is meant to be a fun community to learn, fundraise and educate ourselves and others!

Meet our newest member Ravneet!!

“Hi everyone! My name is Ravneet, and I am currently a freshman at UC Berkeley. Originally, I am from California’s Central Valley, so living in the hustle and bustle of Berkeley has been exciting! I am not too sure what I want to major in, but I know it will be related to the biological/medical field. Also, I am super interested in research involving treatments for T1D and biomedical engineering, so I hope to be involved in the future. In my free time, I enjoy baking, reading, and watching Netflix shows.

I was diagnosed with T1D in January of 2018, in the midst of my Junior year of high school. Initially, it was really difficult to handle diabetes along with classes, clubs, and sports, but I believe the struggle has made me stronger.

I want to join the CDN chapter at Berkeley to connect with people who share similar experiences, and create a fun and understanding community!”

Hello Everyone!
Our community is slowly but surely growing, and I am looking forward to hosting our first meeting and getting to know you all!
Please spread the word across campus and within the east bay community. Although this is a largely college based community, support for T1D’s should have no boundaries and I welcome everyone in the area!

Please comment with your availability this week so I can try to find a time that works for most of us to meet up!
Thanks so much!

Meet our UCB founder: Maia Bickert

Hi all of you lovely humans! My name is Maia. I am currently a junior at UC Berkeley. As a freshman I met several other diabetics because we saw each other’s insulin pumps clipped to our hips. I really loved the immediate sense of connection and understanding. I decided freshman year I wanted to start a CDN chapter, but never got it off the ground because the stresses of Berkeley were overwhelming.

I was born and raised in Lake Tahoe, I love everything outdoors and try to escape the busy-ness of Berkeley most weekends. I am studying molecular and cell biology with an emphasis in immunology because **what is going on with our poor bodies!?!**.

I was diagnosed with T1D December 2015. I was in a clinical trial starting 2 months after my diagnosis, which sadly has shown no lasting effects. However, going through that trial and seeing the clinical side of things taught me a lot. This semester I will be volunteering as a lab assistant in the Diabetes Center at UCSF, hoping to get my hands dirty with some new insights to the future of life with diabetes.

I am really excited to meet more people and create a supportive community here at Cal where we can all help each other in all aspects of life. If you recognize me around campus please say hi!! (Currently taking a break from my insulin pump) I am a busy girl this semester, but will do my best to build up a fun community.
