Dear Berkeley donors, this Valentineโs Day, weโre full of adoration for you! Thank you for choosing to support Cal. ๐๐
GIVING THANKS: Yair F. โ24, Geophysics
When applying to colleges, I knew I wanted to study earthquakes. Iโd been fascinated by them since I was 8 years old. I had heard about earthquake research at UC Berkeley, and I am really happy that I made the choice to come here. Iโve had the opportunity to do earthquake research at the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory, and I recently worked on a research project with another undergraduate student. Throughout the process we essentially got to act as grad students โ working together, brainstorming, discussing and practicing what we presented, presenting our work, and so on. Through these experiences, Iโve found a love for research, especially for solving problems by analyzing patterns and observations.
During a high school tour through UC Berkeley, I got to speak to a group of high schoolers about my research as an undergrad, and one of them asked me: โHow does it feel to be doing what you always wanted to do since you were a kid?โ I had to take a second before answering because I realized that, for a good while, Iโd only been looking ahead and living in the present, keeping my mind busy with my research and the friends Iโve made through this and other activities. I replied: โIt really hasnโt hit me yet how far Iโve come and how incredible it is that I am here, but I really enjoy it and I am very happy that I get to do this.โ The science is exciting, but I think another role that is just as important is to help inspire people who are like me at their age, and to encourage them to follow their dreams.
Receiving this scholarship has given me an incomparable and irreplaceable ease of mind, and I am very glad that it has allowed me to focus on making the best out of my experience at Berkeley. This scholarship has held open the doors to my future throughout my time here, which gives me a glowing sense of hope. Thank you very much for making it possible for me to be at UC Berkeley. Your generosity is life-changing, and I hope that in the future I am able to give to a new generation, just like you have.

I grew up in a small town in Southern California. After I completed third grade, my parents decided that I would attend school in a different district so that I could have a better education. Even though my new school was thirty minutes away, my parents made sure I was never late to a class. Furthermore, they gave me the freedom in middle and high school to choose the classes I wanted to take and participate in the activities that I wanted to do. To this day, my parents inspire me to push myself in everything I do, from schoolwork to extracurriculars. I am very grateful to have a family that works so hard to provide for me and encourages me to do the best I can.
This scholarship has relieved a large amount of financial stress from my parents and me. It has also allowed me to pursue activities that I am passionate in, such as Cal Band โ the band is my family on campus, and I am thankful that I have the time to participate in Cal Band events and promote school spirit. This scholarship encourages me to do the best that I can during my time at UC Berkeley. I feel that I have been given an opportunity to do something great in the world, and I do not want to waste it.
After I graduate, I feel that my calling is to be a researcher working to solve many of the problems our society faces. I intend to minor in Food Systems, and would like to combine my knowledge of chemistry and agriculture within a laboratory setting, with a focus on hydroponics and other advanced methods of farming. I believe that our current food systems and farming methods are unsustainable, and I would like to work towards a solution to this that leads to a brighter future. One aspect of Berkeley that will always stay with me is to follow my passions, as those are the areas that I will truly excel in.
