Superb!

I just finished Q & A by Vikas Swarup and loved it without reservations.

The story is simple enough, which is probably why it became a successful movie, Slumdog Millionaire. Ram Mohammad Thomas, a teenager from Mumbai's slums, is a contestant in the quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati? (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?). He wins against all odds, but was he cheating? Police think so and arrest him until a lawyer manages to free him and learns how Ram's life provided the correct answers to all the questions.

What's impressive about this book isn't that all the horrors of growing up as an unwanted orphan in modern-day India provided the right answers to twelve questions. It's the fact that Ram Mohammad Thomas maintains a positive outlook on life despite the hardships he has to endure, the brutality, robberies, and violence he has to face. A mere eighteen-year-old, he comes in contact with the worst specimens of the human race, those who mutilate young ones only to make them more profitable beggars, killers on hire, brothers who turn their sisters into prostitutes, mother's who let their sons die like rabid dogs, fathers who abuse their daughters. Yet, nothing shakes our hero's belief in a better future, in himself mostly. In Ram's own words, "As I said, luck has got nothing to do with it.' [...] Because luck comes from within.'"

It's the aha moment at the end of the book that clinched it for me, so I give it a 5-star review and recommend it to everyone who is fed up with the corruption of our times and has lost all hope in humankind.

I just finished Q & A by Vikas Swarup and loved it without reservations.
