Today, we share with you some of the most surprising secrets of the Gothic quarter of Barcelona:

1 - The holes in the façade of the church dedicated to Sant Felip Neri, attest to the sad story that took place january 30, 1938 in which more than 40 people were killed, most of them children seeking refuge in the basements of the church.

2 - At number 6 Carrer Sant Domènec del Call you will find the oldest inhabited house in Barcelona. It is known that the building has been inhabited since at least the twelfth century, that it housed a brothel during the post war period and that it was renovated in the year 2000 to serve as a private home. This almost millenary construction also managed to survive the severe earthquake of 1428, which tilted its facade.

3 - The Greater Synagogue, one of the medieval buildings in Barcelona whis is still standing. Located on Carrer de Marlet, number 5, it can boast of being one of the oldest synagogues in Europe (despite being documented since the eighth century, archaeological works place it in the third century of our era, in full Roman age).

4 - Saint Eulàlia herded geese in Sarrià and legend has it that at the age of 13, she was sentenced to 13 martyrdoms (one per year) for refusing to renounce the Christian faith in the middle of Roman times. In this way, the number of her geese reminds us of the age at which the co-patron died and the amount of punishments she suffered for her faith.

5 - The secret of Calle del Timó. It is an alley where at the end there is a door whose history dates back to the 13th century. It was built by the Knights Templar to enter and exit their command of Barcelona without having to cross the city walls.

6 - Carrer Petritxol on first glance seems like just another narrow twisting street full of shops and cafés. But it is actually one of the most famous streets in Barcelona, known for its delicious and authentic hot chocolate. Is a necessary Barcelona stop for all chocolate lovers.

The Gòtic Quarter is the oldest core of the city and its old town, and is where most of the buildings and streets with historical significance in the city are located. Over the centuries it has assumed the role of a center of political and institutional representation.

The Gòtic neighborhood is made up, at the same time, of different historical neighborhoods that retain their own personality: the Call, Sant Just i Pastor, Santa Maria del Pi, the Cathedral, Santa Anna, the Mercè and the Palau.

The historical urbanization axes of the neighborhood correspond to the Roman cardo and decumanus in the highest part of the ancient Táber mountain (Plaza de Sant Jaume).
