Today we introduced DaVinci Resolve 16 Public Beta 4 which features performance and stability enhancements based on beta feedback from editors, colorists, VFX artists and sound editors.

For editors, DaVinci Resolve Public beta 4 enables Rec. 2020 tagging on video monitoring outputs, adds support for frame.io line and rectangle annotations and improves stabilization behavior for rotated clips. In addition, DaVinci Resolve Public Beta 4 enhances the way clips are resized on the edit page after Fusion effects have been added, fixes issues with undoing actions when in cinema mode, and allows you to add a description, set the visibility and define a category when uploading video to YouTube.

Colorists will find that alpha channels are now handled better in color managed workflows, data burn overlays now show the correct duration, color trace reliability is improved for custom frame rate timelines, the render cache is now refreshed correctly, and copying and pasting node attributes without keyframes is more accurate. In addition, DaVinci Resolve Public Beta 4 addresses issues with interactivity in the classic stabilizer, film grain tools when using Resolve Live, Dolby Vision metadata, simultaneous HDR and SDR monitoring, and more!

The Fusion page has been improved with faster performance with multi stroke paint, improved temporal effects, more accurate masks from EXR files, correct placement of on-screen polygon controls and more.

Sound editors can now create audio crossfades on the Fairlight page and apply presets to Fairlight buses for equalizer, dynamics, plugins and channel setups. DaVinci Resolve Public Beta 4 also addresses an issue with the behavior of audio unit plugins on Macs with the Fairlight Audio Accelerator, improves playback and monitoring performance when deleting unused tracks, correctly reflects changes in the bus format dialog, and fixes the layout of audio meters and track controls when using a large number of channels.

In addition, DaVinci Resolve Studio Public Beta 4 improves accuracy, performance and stability with broadcast wave files, Panasonic AVC-Intra 50 clips, HDR metadata, and the rendering of timelines with transitions or adjustment clips.

Public beta 3 adds support for dragging and organizing smart bins into folders, lets you copy retime and scaling attributes between clips, improves elastic wave alignment for dialog replacement work, adds new timecode output in the Fairlight page for driving external audio applications and more. Compositing compound clips that contain gaps is now more accurate, performance when selecting multiple clips on the Edit page has been improved, as well as H.264 and H.265 encoding with AMD hardware. We’ve also added support for keyboard shortcuts for both clip and timeline actions in the cut page.

On the edit page, there have been improvements to dynamic trimming with synced multi-channel audio, compound clip editing, and more accurate clean up behavior when flattening unused clips. In addition, speed changes now correctly ripple the timeline, audio waveforms now display properly when using stacked or tabbed timelines, keyboard shortcuts are more reliable, text rendering has been improved, clip colors are refreshed correctly and much more.

For visual effects, Fusion now correctly handles undo changes for certain node parameters, the icons for aux channels now reflect the current state in the viewer, OpenGL rendering of aux channels has been improved, improvements have made to CUDA processing with the fast gaussian blur, and overall stability has been greatly improved.

Colorists will find that third party OpenFX plugins are now more stable, timeline wipe actions now display correctly in the GPU scopes, and histogram backgrounds are now displayed properly when viewing the timeline node graph.

Multiple issues have been addressed on the Fairlight page. These include B-Chain setup, foley sampler accuracy when detecting the fundamental frequency of a sample, VCA grouping states and more accurate bus loudness history when zooming on the Fairlight timeline. Control room volume now persists across application restarts, loudness values are now calculated correctly for surround channels, and relinked media now displays the correct waveforms. In addition, automation controls have been improved and overall audio quality across fades.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K ‘Balloons’

Andreas Neumann discusses in depth his experience using the new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K for the first time. ‘Balloons’ is Andreas’ extreme lighting test as he constantly shoots directly into the sun, wide open. ‘Balloons’ documents the camera’s performance from 5am in the morning into the height of the midday sun.

“I shot the ‘Balloons’ camera test at Temecula in California, where we could really push the dynamic range of this new 4K camera. I have shot balloons in Kenya before, so I knew it would make a really great test shooting from dawn until midday. When you’re in a balloon it is super bright, which is challenging to get the right exposure. So this was going to be a very good test of the power of this camera.”

“One of the briefs was not to move the camera around too much, because Blackmagic Design’s CEO hates shaky handheld footage. So that immediately triggered me to constantly break that rule and move the camera around all of the time! In fact, this is where the idea to use a steadicam came from. I agree with him, footage on smaller cameras can look like a tourist shot it.”

“However, my plan was to put the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K into a MoVi so I could go whizzing around the balloon on a Onewheel electric skateboard. Just like I was a super charged human dolly! Balloon setups can be pretty boring, especially when the launch is from a parking lot. I know from shooting balloons before, that you have to be able to move as the balloon moves. So movement and speed is everything, which you could do with a camera this size. If you don’t move super fast you’ll end up with a bunch of scenes that just look like stills shots.”

“I wanted to get every interesting opportunity there was. So I was trying to hover around the balloon as fast as I could, trying to catch every bit of action. It is a lot to coordinate having a 4K camera on a gimbal and balancing on a Onewheel. But I could do all of that because of how light this camera is. And that’s how I got the girl doing the ballet pose, which was something that just happened.”

“This was all shot very early in the morning just after 5am. I was using my Rokinon 24 Prime T1.5 lens, so I had to be very careful with the focus. I wear reading glasses as well, so I decided to mount a Blackmagic Video Assist 4K as a second 7” monitor to the rig. I shot those scenes at F4 using ISO800, and with a polarizer. When you are moving fast like this, I hate it when I have too much in-focus. It can sometimes work against you, but then again, that’s how you get beautiful shots! I was mostly shooting these scenes at 23.98 and then 60 for the slow motion stuff, which was then played back at 24fps.”

“The camera Blackmagic Design supplied for the test came with Olympus Micro Four Thirds lenses, but I used my own Rokinon Primes because I wanted it all manual. I also have a vintage set of Leica Primes I converted to EF mount, but I decided not to bring them in the end. When I first looked at the camera, I kept thinking to myself, why do a small camera with a micro four thirds sensor instead of a bigger sensor? However, I soon found the results of this camera in 4K were so good! The 4/3 mount is truly great, because you can so easily go from EF or even PL lenses with an adapter, which is another phenomenal thing about this camera.”

“There were four of us in the basket for the flight, so it was an incredibly small space with absolutely no place for a tripod or any sort of rig. Everything had to be shot naked. Because we were all so close I used my Rokinon 85 and 50 to do all of the intimate stuff. I was also trying to catch some of the other balloons in flight in the background, so these were all super challenging shots because of how bright it was up there.”

“What I found was that the range of this camera is truly phenomenal. I was totally amazed at what that micro four thirds sensor could handle. I think it was the same quality as the URSA Mini Pro with the full sensor! I was shooting 60fps in the air with the lens right open. This is a challenging environment for any camera, because I was constantly shooting into the light, or with the sun directly behind people’s faces. The results were incredible. You can actually see all the detail in their faces, including the sweat on the pilot, while still seeing all of the detail in the background. I love shooting directly into the light, and with this camera you could safely do that.”

“My wife was wearing these very reflective Chanel glasses. When you look at those shots you can actually see reflections off the ground, the balloon above, and the sky in the background. This was an interesting one, because I had to light on her and hope the background would not blow out. There is so much detail there. The camera really did capture everything I was seeing.”

“I was also very surprised at how well the back screen performed in that bright sunlight. After my assistant adjusted it to super-bright, it was really very good. I could see all of the detail. The OS too was super easy and much the same as the URSA. You can change things very easily and quickly with this camera. One of the really nice things is how you can slide for ISO and aperture, which is a great improvement. Having the same size touch screen on this camera as my URSA, was also another surprise.”

“While we were in the balloon basket, I used a monopod with a very good fluid head. This is a really good marriage for this camera because it takes full advantage of its small size. I found that I could quickly jump around, getting some really nice shots this way. A good fluid head makes it easy to get great movements as well.”

“My background was originally shooting TVCs where I had a team of five assistants and a 35mm Arri camera. But with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, I can easily achieve everything I had then, with just one assistant! I have never liked small cameras before, because I love really big cinematic shots. I found by building a rig around this camera, I could shoot it like a big camera. Then when you put it on a steadicam it becomes incredibly powerful. You can easily glide it through the air because it’s so lightweight and small. You can now put everything you need in a 1510 Pelican Case and you have a whole film system in one box!”

“It will be a very good camera for interviews and low light situations as well. I know I wasn’t there to test the low light abilities, but it was truly phenomenal. I did test it at my house at 3am and I was amazed at what you get with 25600 ISO. Although the camera looks like a DSLR and will shoot stills, it never felt like a DSLR to me. I respected it as a 4K camera, like a smaller version of Blackmagic Design’s URSA Mini. When you are shooting on the go you have a powerhouse in terms of capabilities with this camera. I was shooting using Apple ProRes 422 HQ, so you can only imagine the quality if I had shot in 4K RAW!“

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K ‘Nature’

Mark Wyatt discusses in depth his recent experience with the new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. ‘Nature’ is Mark’s test of the camera’s 4K performance in the extreme lighting conditions of rainforests and ravines.

“The camera tests I wanted to do were in the forests located on the outer West Coast of Canada. This area has one of the warmest yet rainiest climates in Canada and has some extremely rare temperate rainforests. I was most interested in seeing how the new sensor in the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K would handle the harsh lighting conditions of a sun-lit forest. Although the shots I was doing are quite basic, the dramatic difference between the low-light of the forest floor and sun light can be very challenging for any camera.”

“Even though I was moving in and out of darkness and then into shafts of sunlight, I found that I didn’t need any bounce or fill, which I think really shows how good the dynamic range of this camera is. I also found that by underexposing slightly to save some highlight detail, there was lots of clean shadows to bring back up in post.”

“The colors and dynamic range of this camera reminded me a lot of the URSA Mini Pro, which is a great thing! There were a lot of similarities between the two cameras, such as the OS, the screen and the fact I could use my Transcend 128GB 650 CFast cards.”

“For these types of nature shots, I like them to be as smooth as possible, so I used a DJI Ronin-M to glide the camera through the landscape to get that fluid look. This camera is nice and light and was a joy to use with a gimbal. I also had an iFootage Shark Slider with me, and I found it super easy to move the the camera between the slider and the gimbal.”

“I used a couple of my own EF mount lenses, the Sigma 18-35mm and Rokinon 50mm. I paired these with the Metabones Speedbooster to Micro Four Thirds and Firecrest Ultra ND’s. This setup worked well giving me the options to get wide shots but also allowing me to get the closeups of foliage with a very shallow depth of field. I shot raw at ISO 400 at 24fps, with some overcranked at 30 and 60 fps.”

“For the next test, I travelled to a nearby ravine and waterfall. I chose this scene as I knew it had some great colors, but also some very challenging lighting conditions where I could really push BMD’s Micro Four Thirds sensor. The interior of the ravine was quite dark but some areas where the sunlight would sneak in, was blindingly bright.”

“By increasing the ISO to an impressive 1250 and 2500, it allowed me to capture the dark moss-lined walls and unique emerald color, yet also hold onto the highlight detail of the top of the waterfall and sky. I feel most cameras would likely struggle with this scene.”

“I had some time left on the second day, so I quickly grabbed a few more shots of the nearby ocean while I still had daylight. I shot all of this footage at 60 fps to test the slow motion. Looking back at this footage now, I wish I had spent more time filming the ocean, as I feel the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K really captured the blue of the water in an intriguing way.”

“I had the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K for only a few days, but overall I was really impressed by it. The weight of the camera is very liberating, especially when you are used to using larger camera systems. The screen is big and bright enough to use in daylight, which I found great for judging focus and exposure. And, the colors too on the screen, were also nicely represented. In fact, I would argue it is Blackmagic Design’s best screen yet.”

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K ‘Models Walking at Night’

The second in a series of three test shoots, John Brawley discusses in depth his experience with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K shooting ‘Models Walking at Night’. In this test, John was specifically checking out the camera’s higher dynamic range and color accuracy.

“This camera test was about keeping it very simple in terms of lighting and to focus on the dynamic range. I had the camera naked for these scenes using just a small dolly for the camera moves. I was using a Micro Four Thirds Olympus Pro zoom 12-100 F4 to change the focus length and a remote follow focus setup. Because we were shooting late into the afternoon, just before sunset, I had a couple of SLR Magic ND filters in front of the glass with a Hudson Spider LED daylight softbox behind the camera. I think the ND filters were 1.2, which is a 3 or 4 stop ND filter. And that was pretty much as complicated as it got. I set it up just like a photo shoot.”

“What I wanted to achieve was to test the dynamic range, but to still come up with some really great looking images. When you look at the first scene of the blonde girl, you can actually see the direct sun hitting a white building in the distance, out of the window. All of the detail is there without anything clipping! You can see all of the details in her top and into the folds of what she is wearing. You can definitely see as much in the shadow areas of this shot, as anywhere else.”

“I think this shot truly shows off the potential for what the dynamic range of this camera can handle. In the later shots, you can actually see that the sun has gone down a lot from the first scene. You can now see that the levels in the window have come down by quite a bit.”

“When you look at the highlights around the desk lamp, you can see how good the dynamic range is. The colors aren’t bending as it goes into near clipping, as you get with some other cameras. Where you get clipping the highlights start to become less natural looking as they go off the scale. But you can clearly see with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, that we are holding onto all of that detail really well!”

“And when you think that I am only shooting in ProRes HQ, which is a 10 bit format, you can only imagine how it would look in RAW. But to get all of this from a ProRes codec I think is really amazing and shows what great shots you can get with this camera.”

“Having that higher dynamic range and a reasonably high bit depth file, means you have a lot of wriggle-room to correct anything that needs to be balanced. In this case, I had the tinge of green coming through the window tint in the glass. This extra range lets you manage and massage the image to get you into a really nice place. You’re not fighting the codec or the dynamic range of the camera.”

“The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K gives you a ton of options. If you want to take it warmer, darker or cooler, you now have so much latitude in terms of dynamic range and depth of color. When you’ve got this much room to move with your grading, you can have softer lifted blacks, or put a bit more contrast with more saturation, which is my personal taste. With this camera you just have so much extra choice because you can take the image wherever you want. And that’s the truly great thing about having such a vibrant and high precision image!”

“One of the other things I really love about this camera is the size and weight. With it stripped right back, I found it very easy to shoot hand held. I really liked operating that way as it becomes a far more instinctual way of shooting. What I also found with this camera, is it picked up on the different skins tones, perfectly. All of the skin details are there and it doesn’t look pushed at all. This camera captured everything it was supposed to - and then some more!”
