The Blue Supermoon, lit up Deniá´s port as people enjoyed the night market and many restaurants on a beautiful warm August evening.

Supermoons occurs when a full moon rises at its closest point to earth in its orbit. A blue moon happens when there are two full moons within a single calendar month. As they are rare, they prompted the saying, “once in a blue moon” - a comparison to rare events like when dust in the atmosphere makes the moon actually appear blue. However, last night´s moon did not look blue: just bigger and brighter than usual!

The festival is in honour of the Holy Blood (Santíssima Sang) patron saint of Denia. Various religious celebrations are taking place with the most spectacular of these being the procession of the Holy Blood. On Wednesday, this was represented by the figure of Jesus Christ that was ceremoniously taken from the convent of Augustinian nuns and through the streets of Denia.

The procession of the Holy Blood had a sendoff from women representative of the Valencian fire tradition, known as “Falleras.”
