2J have had a very exciting and wonderful start to the new year. We have kicked off with our new topic all about the Sensational Safari. We have been learning about Kenya, rivers, mountains, maps and the Big Five! In design, we have made a Safari moving picture. Using levers, wheels and pins we can create pictures that move as we tell different stories.

The Oakley College football teams had an outstanding season, going undefeated and winning every game. Their remarkable performance led them to secure the league title in both divisions. Demonstrating exceptional skill, teamwork, and determination, the players showed great sportsmanship on and off the field. Key highlights include their impressive defending, in which they conceded very few goals, and their fantastic scoring abilities consistently outperformed opponents. We are extremely proud of the players’ hard work and unity, which were pivotal in their successful campaign.

Year 1 enjoyed a visit to the Casa de Colón to explore the history of the Canary Islands with a focus on Christopher Columbus, who we are studying in our Significant Explorers unit in humanities this term. The children enjoyed an informative guided tour around the museum and they also had time to draw the Casa de Colon and the cathedral. Everyone enjoyed exploring history and had fun imagining what it would have been like to go on a great voyage!

For World Ocean Day, all of the children came to school wearing something blue. They learnt about why we have this day and the importance of the oceans to our world. Children enjoyed making sea creatures, learning about the different layers of the ocean and also thought about ways to keep our oceans clean and safe. It was a lovely day with an important message!

As part of celebrating 🌊 World Oceans Day 🌊, Y10 had the opportunity to go on a sailing trip ⛵ and spend the morning learning about and practicing this native Canarian sport. Students also focused on the importance of recycling ♻️ and keeping the oceans clean 🌍 by collecting some of the rubbish found during our time sailing.

This past week the primary school took part in our annual Sports Day at Oakley Park! It was an amazing week with a wonderful atmosphere created by the children, parents and teachers. There were so many different sporting activities in which the children took part in. Some of the children’s favourites included the fancy dress relay, the football golf target, three legged race and many more! It was brilliant to see so many parents take part in the fiercely competitive and fun parent egg and spoon race, there were a few questionable techniques!! Thank you to everyone who came and supported the wonderful athletes this week! We can’t wait for next year.

Year 4 have been learning about settlements in school and have recently spent the day exploring the settlement of Sioux City. We were able to compare the settlements of the Native Americans to those in Europe, along with some of the animals that the people would have needed during those times. A highlight of the day was having the opportunity to feed some milk to goats and piglets. The shows in Sioux City highlighted what daily life would have been like during these times, which was a fantastic experience for all!

Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory, but is there any evidence to support them? In History lessons, Year 9 are currently investigating whether Lee Harvey Oswald could have assassinated President John F. Kennedy or was he a patsy, as he claimed? Students are gathering evidence and starting to form their own conclusions based on this evidence, an important life skill.

Our year 7 students have been studying Contact and Non-contact forces, and they had the chance to use a Van de Graaff generator. It’s a cool device that produces static electricity! Needless to say that we were buzzing with anticipation to spark curiosity and explore the shocking science behind it. “There is nothing like the electrifying experience of hands-on learning!”

Owls and Rabbits enjoyed a fun and sunny day at Park Juan Pablo today. They used their senses walking around the park, stopping to listen, smell and see the signs of spring. Afterwards, they used their gross motor skills and strength to explore and climb on the park equipment and play games with their friends.

On Thursday, Y5 had a fabulous morning out at the Caldera de Bandama, complementing their learning in school about the topic of volcanoes. The guides, Eloy and Loli, were very knowledgeable and taught the children so many facts. The children hiked down 200m, and along the way learnt many facts about all the varied plant life that grows on the Caldera. Hiking back up 200m was hard work.... but surprisingly easier than descending!
