Black and white marble table clock 'pendule portique', end of the 18th century, Louis XVI of the period; the enamel dial with Arabic numerals, signed 'Folin l'Ainé à Paris', the mechanism with an anchor exhaust and a pendulum suspended from string, the sound mechanism with counting wheel, ringing once in the half an hour and the whole hour in an amalgamated silver bell. 53x37x15 cm.

Nicolas-Alexandre Folin

Unlike many artisans, Nicolas-Alexandre Folin was the rare individual who managed to prosper during the turbulent French Revolution. Although he was only accepted into the guild as a teacher in 1789, the year in which the revolution began, Folin had been active as a watchmaker for many years before. The records of the guild label it as a Trinitarian, a term applied to students who work on the grounds of the Hospital de la Trinité in Paris. Free of charge, the hospital taught the children a trade for eight years, the same duration as a normal apprenticeship of a guild. At the end of this period, young artisans had the right to be received in the guild as teachers without other formalities, such as the creation of a masterpiece.

Folin's business prospered during and after the Revolution, when Napoleon I ruled France.
