Hi! My name is Ada, and I did my internship at Mayan Monkey Mijas Chocolate Factory for 3 months (Sept - Dec 2023).
Looking back on this period, where my project focus was the company’s social media and doing research on spider monkeys to share awareness about all they do for our cacao (moot point: would we even have chocolate if it weren’t for them?).It has been both very educational and very inspiring.
A cool journey: learning and sharing about these amazing animals, and also developing my skills in photography, writing and communication!

one of the comments on a recent post was that we are overpriced. I asked for clarification and the lady commented that supermarket chocolate is much cheaper. And of course, the lady is correct, supermarket chocolate can be much cheaper. This was my response.

There is a huge difference between overpriced and cheaper to buy in the supermarket.

When we first started the business we purchased all our cacao from the ivory coast in Africa. 70 percent of all cacao in the world is grown there. It's extremely cheap at around 2000 euros a tonne. We don't purchase from there though any longer and our raw materials from the Dominican Republic and Ecuador cost from 7000 euros a tonne to 13,000 euros a tonne.

So why do we purchase cacao which costs so much more money? Does it taste better? Somewhat yes, but honestly not enough to justify the huge difference in costs. The answer is that in 2014 we learnt that sadly the farmers in Africa are hugely abused with ten million of them earning a daily salary of just 54 cents. and that's in a country where you need a couple of dollars to not be considered living in abject poverty. And that's a best case scenario. worse case is you are one of the two million literal child slaves working there today. These are children, average age of 9, that have been sold into slavery for around 150 dollars and trafficked thousands of miles from home. They are locked away at night and beaten or worse if they don't work. They are unpaid.

When we learnt of this abuse we considered closing the business as we didn't want to profit from slavery and so ended up choosing to purchase ethically sourced cacao.

We also use zero palm oil in any of products. Palm oil is twenty times cheaper than cacao butter but of course the cost to the environment is huge. We have approximately twenty years left of orangutans before they are extinct due to humans destroying their habitat.

I'm terribly sad to give you another fact. Mayan monkey Mijas is the only chocolate factory in the whole of Spain recognised by the NGO www.slavefreechocolate.org . This has to change.

And another, in 1971 the average price of cacao in Africa was 2700 dollars. today it is 2000 dollars. adjusted for inflation the price should be around 14000 dollars but the huge conglomerates such as Nestle and Kraft foods keep the prices artificially low and the only way it's possible is via the abuse of humanity.

Please, I urge everyone to watch the documentary on YouTube or on our website "the dark side of chocolate". the film was a project by a journalist who was murdered in the ivory coast when he started investigating modern child slavery there. It's an eye opener.

Hilary, I'm sorry if you feel our products are overpriced. It would be so much easier for us financially to revert to using cacao from the ivory coast, drop our prices and we would sell multiple times the amount that we currently do so. The first two years of our business were financially incredible compared to nowadays. But I cannot do that, my conscience won't allow it. Sincerely, Jason.
