The Research unit ATILF (Computer Processing and Analysis of the French Language) offers a postdoctoral position in natural language processing (NLP).

Topic: Discovery of multiword expressions, their meaning and their linguistic properties in texts using large language models
Location: ATILF, Nancy, France
Starting date: from February 2024
Duration: 12 months (possibility to extend the duration for one more year)

Subject. The term « multiword expression » refers to a combination of multiple lexical items that displays irregular composition possibly on different linguistic levels (morphology, syntax, semantics, ...). They include a large variety of phenomena such as idioms (run around in circles), support verb constructions (take a walk), nominal compounds (dry run), complex function units (in spite of). They have been the subject of extensive research work in the NLP community over the last 50 years.

The goal of this post-doc position is to investigate new methods for discovering multiword expressions, their meaning and their linguistic properties in texts, in order to enrich an induced semantic lexicon with new multiword entries, definitions, argumental structure, and other properties. The emergence of Large Language Models (LLM) opens new promising perspectives for multiword expressions, not only regarding their semantic compositionality but also their linguistic characterization. The methods will be primarily experimented on French, but other languages are also possible.

Context. The position is part of the SELEXINI project (https://selexini.lis-lab.fr, 2022-2026) funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR). The goal of the SELEXINI project is to develop next-generation lexicon induction methods for natural language processing. The induced lexicons will not only cluster word usages according to their senses, but also contain multiword expressions, argumental structure, generated definitions, etc, combining the power of large pre-trained language models and existing lexical resources to address the lack of interpretability and diversity in current language technology. The hired researcher will be fully integrated in the project team.

Requirements. Applicants should hold a PhD thesis in computer science, in applied mathematics, in natural language processing, or in computational linguistics. Applications from PhD students planning their defense by December 31st, 2023 are also welcome.
The hired post-doc researcher should have the following skills:

expertise in deep learning for NLP and notably large language models
excellent programming skills
good linguistic skills
good knowledge of French would be a plus
team spirit

Call for Applications

UniDive COST Action is pleased to announce a call for Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM) applications.

The goal of the UniDive COST Action is to build a network of researchers, practitioners, and experts who take on an important challenge posed by the booming domain of natural language processing (NLP): to account for and foster both inter- and intra-language diversity. To this end, UniDive will be making available a number of Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) over its duration.

STSMs are funded exchange visits aimed at strengthening the existing research network and fostering collaboration between participants in the COST action. Scientists and researchers who are members of UniDive can visit an institution or laboratory located in a country other than their country of affiliation, learn new techniques and gain access to specific data, instruments and/or methods not available in their own institutions/organisations.

Candidates can find a host institution either through personal search or through the published STSM hosting proposals. Please note that applicants cannot apply for more than one STSM at a given host institution.

The duration of an STSM is normally from 5 calendar days to 3 months and should not overlap across two consecutive Grant Periods. For this round of applications, approved STSMs will end before early October 2024.

Please note that the financial support available via the STSM scheme is awarded to individuals and can be up to EUR 4,000 per grant. It is intended to contribute towards the travel and subsistence cost of a STSM but not to cover employment or all costs. Final decisions on the grants are based on the applicant’s request and reflect the costs induced by the duration and location of the STSM.

Applications are submitted via the e-COST portal using the dedicated forms available. The content of the application shall include a title, start and end date, budget requested by the applicant, information about the host institution and contact person as well as a description of the goals of the STSM, the work to be carried out by the applicant, expected outcomes and the contribution to the UniDive objectives. A confirmation from the intended host institution in receiving the applicant is required.

Please, note that a written report must also be submitted via e-COST upon the completion of the STSM.

Deri tani, në kuadër të projektit janë realizuar një sërë aktititetesh, si: ligjërata me profesorë vendas e të huaj, trajnime, konkurse studentore, shkolla verore, tryeza shkencore etj.
Jemi krenarë të pohojmë se falë përkushtimit të stafit të projektit, Moduli Jean Monnet po zbatohet cilësisht sipas objektivave të synuara, madje në disa raste duke i tejkaluar ato.
Për muajt në vijim janë parashikuar një sërë aktivitetesh, të cilat synojnë promovimin e studimeve europiane, duke u ndalur veçanërisht te shumëgjuhësia, si një aspekt rëndësishëm i BE-së.
