Yesterday was the Spring Equinox, a time for new life. With that in mind, here is some helpful information for any pregnant ladies out there:

Pregnancy has a huge impact on the human body but did you know how much it affects the feet? Throughout pregnancy and after the birth our feet can swell, ache, cramp and become itchy due to hormonal changes and natural weight gain.
The main causes of foot pain during pregnancy are swollen feet and ankles and pain in the arch and heel. Relaxin is an ovarian hormone which increases during pregnancy and causes the muscles and ligaments to stretch and soften. This in turn makes the feet more prone to ankle and ligament strains.
As with many foot problems, footwear can also be a factor. Podiatrist’s recommend a shoe with a heel height of approximately 3cm (1.2inches) as this helps to reduce any pain or discomfort by shifting the weight further forward on the feet. A supportive, wide fitting shoe will minimise any discomfort and help to avoid any long term problems. Shoes with straps can help the shoe to stay in place but towards the end of the pregnancy, it’s advisable to avoid shoes with fiddly straps.
If high heels can’t be avoided, occasional wear is a must. Save them for occasions where you won’t be on your feet for too long. Choose a supportive shoe for everyday wear.
Feet can swell during the day and as such, shoe shopping is best done later on in the day. It’s a common myth that shoes can be worn or broken in. If they pinch or rub in the shop, they will be just as uncomfortable when you get them home. A shoe with a round or square toe is recommended. Shoes with a pointed toe can cause much discomfort. When shopping for boots, take into consideration that your calves may also swell during pregnancy. Choose a boot with a side zip fastening to make it easier to get them on and off – something you’ll be very grateful for as the pregnancy progresses.
To reduce the risk of cramps and swelling it is recommended that you keep active. Before starting an exercise program do consult your GP or midwife.
If you do experience arch pain or general foot pain, help is available from your Foot Health Professional.

To support National Feet Week last week, the founder of Calla Shoes http://callashoes.co.uk/ had a lovely chat with Claire Forbes, registered podiatrist and owner of clinic, Forbes Feet, based in Jersey.

Many of us have spent more time at home than usual over the last year and without knowing it, we may have been damaging our feet.

Listen to experienced podiatrist and biomechanical specialist, Claire Forbes, tell you how to take care of your feet at home and when you might need to seek out a professional.

A relaxing bath, shower or foot soak at the end of the day takes some beating —but don’t stop there. Moisturise your feet well afterwards and then slip them into some plush socks to lock in the lotion.
Some of us have very dry skin and may have areas that need a little more attention. Try an exfoliating product, readily available in may shops. If you fancy making a simple one, take some fine salt and add a few drops of oil – olive, coconut, almond. Slowly massage in and then wash off well with a gentle soap and water. OR a simple, good old fashioned pumice stone, gently used on wet skin.
When you finally emerge from the shower or from soaking your feet, the first thing you should reach for is a soft towel to pat your feet dry. If you struggle to get down to your feet, or feel they are never really dry, take a sheet of kitchen paper, or a cotton handkerchief, scrunch it up lengthways and weave between your toes. Leave it there for 5 minutes to absorb all the excess moisture. This tip helps to prevent athletes foot. The next thing you should grab is a hydrating, oil-free moisturiser or foot cream. Really slather it on and massage it in.
Then slide those soft, slick feet into a pair of cotton socks before you slip under the sheets for a good night’s rest.
That said, many of my patients don’t like the idea of putting creamy feet in socks or into the sheets. And here in Spain, there is the added risk of cream skating on our wonderful tiled floors.
So here is another idea. Many of us have a favourite TV show – it may only be the news – but we can’t miss it. All pre-show preparations are made: nip to the loo, make a drink, sit down, feet up and relax. How about picking up that foot cream before you sit down? How about this –
 nip to the loo, make a drink, grab the foot cream, sit down, feet up, massage in the foot cream and relax to your favourite programme?
By the time it is finished, the cream will have done its job and you can forget about it. Ta da!

WET FEET

My Google feed tells me we in the SE corner of Spain could get some wet weather over the next coming days. And March is renowned for being a wet month here.
Whilst I don’t imagine for a moment that any of us will get trench foot – immersion foot syndrome – it is worth bearing in mind that we may need to take a little extra care of our feet and shoes should we get a good soaking over the next few days.
We have all had wrinkled feet after a good soaking in the bath, the sea or the swimming pool. But when water seeps through your footwear, your feet can become waterlogged here too, causing those same wrinkles. But trapped within a shoe, they may even smell due to bacteria that can be residing in your shoes. YUCK! The longer your feet are wet, the greater the potential damage to your skin, including tears and the formation of blisters and fissures - deep painful cracks. Depending on where they are located on the foot, these injuries can be uncomfortable at best. If you have underlying conditions affecting circulation, such as diabetes, this may be more sinister.
Wet shoes may also harbour fungal spores and the warmth and dampness can lead to Athletes foot. The fungal infection is called athlete’s foot because it’s commonly seen in athletes. Athlete’s foot isn’t serious, however, if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system and suspect that you have athlete’s foot, you should get advice on treatment as the skin can split, breaking the protective barrier and leaving an opening for other infections and complications.
Nobody likes a pair of wet shoes, throwing them into the tumble dryer is not a good idea - you could end up shrinking your shoes and damaging the dryer. Instead, stuff and wrap the outsides with newspaper. It works fast and won’t harm your shoes. For the best results, wrap a few rubber bands around the newspaper to keep them in close contact with the shoes. The newspaper will absorb the water quickly, but depending on how drenched your shoes are, you may need to change newspaper once or twice. If the insole is removable, that may speed up the process too.
If you know you are going to be getting wet and won’t have chance to get home to dry off, take some spare shoes and socks with you, a towel and some talcum powder. Wear wool or moisture wicking socks – Socks provide an important layer of protection, particularly during the winter. Avoid cotton or synthetic blends as they trap water against your skin. Opt instead for merino wool or moisture wicking materials. Try these few tips and hopefully that way, your feet will thank you for not getting wrinkly, and have a chance to recover. And you can deal with your shoes later when you get home.

Many of us can now get back to the gym. Yay! If you routinely work out, here is some advice for keeping your feet dry and fungus-free.
After a workout, if you’re not going to hit the showers right away, at least bring a fresh pair of socks to slip on as soon as you’re done.
Even better, generously apply some talcum powder before exercising to minimalise dampness

Our poor, load-bearing feet. We ask so much of them and give so little in return. Do you ever wake up with aching feet? Or do they ache at the end of the day when you finally kick off those shoes?
You might be surprised to learn that stretching and strengthening your feet is as important, if not more so, than any other part of your body. And you can do it at home with items you probably already have. You don't have to go to the extreme fitness levels in the photos.
Towel scrunches are one of the best all-around exercises for your feet. All you need is a hand towel and a straight-backed chair. Have a seat and place the short end of the towel just underneath your toes. Then scrunch your toes repeatedly to pull the towel toward you. Do this 5 times.
You can also simply stretch out your legs, with your heel on the ground. Now point those toes to the floor as hard as you can, and relax. Repeat this 5 times.
If you have a tennis ball in the house, this next one is perfect for you. The tennis ball roll is as easy as it sounds. Place the ball on the floor, have a seat and then roll it back and forth on the bottom of your foot. A couple of minutes for each foot should do wonders. No tennis balls around? Use a water bottle.
