Chuck's Rigging

After years of telling people I work 5 days a week, from 11 to 5, unless there is rain forecast or a national holiday in the way, I have slowly got round to actually doing it.
Chuck's Rigging is now oficially closed. It is now june (6), I will be available again in November (11) through until the end of May (5) next year.
Until then I have a life to live and intend on doing so. Have a good summer season.....

Maiden voyage.

Having rearranged transportation, European cars being small enough, the SUP finally made a trip to the water off El Toro beach, Pt Adriano.

It floats which is good, even with me on it…

The surprise to the many who came by to see was that it is made of “Wood”, that around here is a one off, as in most of the yachting world.

Stability is unknown as I have no reference to what it should be, but between myself and the board we stayed upright inspite of a few wobbles, so I guess it is as can be expected.

This is a major workout, calf muscles are definitely not as they used to be and I will have to build up gradually… but what is fun without pain..

So the first of hopefully many wobbles around the bay before I start cruising further offshore.

Now that work has started coming in, there is a bit less time for the fun things in life. I can’t believe over a month has gone by since the last update on my build. Weather has also been changing and interfered with week end play time.

Hopefully this will be the final update before launch date. Wind and weather permitting…

The deck and hull having been bonded were then left to cure, followed by trimming edges and full sand down. The deck motif was fine tuned and a veneer “Wind rose” inlaid on the foredeck. Once happy with the overall deck, the whole board was fiber glassed (3,5Oz cloth).

After fitting the fins, I returned to the hull and stained it, the topsides and the “Covering board” with a mahogany sort of stain. The whole board then received two more coats of resin, with plenty of sanding going on in the mean time and followed by two coats of Varnish for UV protection.

The finish off was completed with brass inserts along the covering board (under deck gussets having been placed before joining deck to hull) to take whatever accessories I choose to fit, possibly a beer cooler, and also to hold the carry handle. The breather tube fitted and finally, a non skid area replicating the “Wind rose” was laid up, covered with black and white sand and varnished over.

It has been a couple of weeks since my last update on the SUP...

The deck was fitted today now that work has been done and the sun has returned, albeit for only a short while.

Clamps are a thing for professionals, builders leftovers, pot plants and a few reels of line do the job perfectly.

Whilst rain interrupted things, I got on with other essential “Works in Progress”. Using some of the left over ply and scraps, it was time to think about propulsion… also known as a paddle.
A gradual buildup of layers, roughly cut to some shape and epoxied together. Final shaping and possible alterations to come before it will be acceptable, but onward we go.

Also putting into the works, some of the personal touches, a decorative “Windrose” to be inlaid on the foredeck, made up of various veneers supplied by Nº-1. Fiddly but fun…
Which is what it is meant to be. (The fun part more than the fiddly…)
