"Heraldo de la Armada"
(Harbinger of The Armada)
33 x 26 x 3 cm.
Pencil drawing on old papers in an old frame.

The 5th of 6 pieces for the "Tide and Ties" Spanish Armada show.
This piece tells the poignant story of a shipwrecked man from the Spanish Armada, discovered washed ashore at Ballygally, Northern Ireland. The artwork features St. Patrick's Church, where locals laid him to rest in an unmarked grave. Years later, a tree grew at the burial site, symbolizing life emerging from tragedy.
A crow perched on the gravestone represents the Morrígan from Irish folklore, a figure associated with war and fate, often foretelling doom and death. The salamander, originally a pendant found from the wreck of "La Girona," symbolizes resilience and magic. Crafted from gold and rubies—materials sourced from far-flung lands during Spain's imperial height—this mythical creature is linked to the belief that it could survive flames. Those who wore it likely sought luck, though tragically, the wearer met a grim fate in the shipwreck.

This piece is part of my contribution to the "Tides and Ties" exhibition at the Hamilton Gallery. It tells the poignant story of a soldier who washed ashore at Ballygally Beach. Discovered by local residents, he was brought to St. Patrick’s Church and laid to rest without a gravestone.

Years later, a sweet chestnut tree, known as "The Spanish Armada Tree," began to grow at the very spot where he was buried. Legend has it that the soldier carried seeds in his pockets to ward off scurvy. From this humble beginning, a magnificent tree emerged, symbolizing the cycle of life and death, and marking an important chapter in our history.
