Impressions from a very successful first “Geopolitical Conversation in Addis Ababa”, launched last Tuesday at the Belgian Residence. The high quality of our 2 keynote speakers, Prof. Dr. Nina Wilen and Prof. Dr. Sven Biscop, both from EGMONT - Institut royal des relations internationales, and the active and engaged interaction with the numerous audience fulfilled all the expectations of the concept behind the geopolitical conversations. Other Embassies will take over the coming months.

Contributing to more common understanding in a world in turmoil.

Thanks to CDRC Ethiopia, the academic partner.

Working on a renewed partnership between Europe and Africa, a partnership based on an equal footing. Preparing a conducive environment by fostering dialogue, sharing ideas and working on common understanding.

Last week the Belgian Embassy contributed to this fundamental debate by organizing a very interesting lunch-talk with Professor Stefan Schepers and Professor Adeyinka Adewale presenting their book “Reimaging Africa - Lifting the Veil of Ignorance”. An honest and open discussion among the participants followed their presentation.

Grateful for the support of Koning Boudewijnstichting to promote these discussions.

Every year on 18th December, the world marks International Migrants Day, a day set aside to recognize the important contribution of migrants while highlighting the challenges they face.

In recent years, conflict, insecurity, and the effects of climate change, war and conflict have heavily contributed to the forced movement whether within countries or across borders. In 2020 over 281 million people were international migrants while over 59 million people were internally displaced by the end of 2021.

Regardless of the reasons that compel people to move, migrants and displaced people represent some of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in society, and are often exposed to abuse and exploitation, have limited access to essential services including healthcare, and are faced with xenophobic attacks and stigma fueled by misinformation.

On the other hand, many migrant workers are often in temporary, informal, or unprotected jobs, which exposes them to a greater risk of insecurity, layoffs, and poor working conditions.

The Embassy of Belgium in Addis Ababa strongly believes that strengthening the contribution of migrants to sustainable development requires collective effort to improve the governance of migration and addressing the challenges migrants face.

10th December 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, color, religion, s*x, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.

The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.

Available in more than 500 languages, it is the most translated document in the world.

However, the promise of the UDHR, of dignity and equality in rights, has been under a sustained assault in recent years. As the world faces challenges new and ongoing – pandemics, conflicts, exploding inequalities, morally bankrupt global financial system, racism, climate change – the values, and rights enshrined in the UDHR provide guideposts for our collective actions that do not leave anyone behind.

The Belgian Embassy in Addis Abeba supports the Human Rights 75th initiative, which aims to move the needle of understanding and action toward greater understanding of the universality of the UDHR and the activism associated with it.

International Human Rights Defenders Day is held on December 9th. it is dedicated to human rights activists, land and environmental defenders, trade unionists, affected community members, and civil society organizations who are at the forefront of protecting rights and civic freedoms.

This observance raises awareness of the abuses on the peaceful, non-violent human rights defenders’ experiences, including being prosecuted, convicted, jailed, intimidated, tortured, and sometimes killed by non-state actors.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre recorded 3671 attacks against HRDs since 2015. More than ever, states must ensure that human rights defenders have safe, open, accessible, and favorable environments to work in.

The protection of and support for Human rights defenders is a priority to Belgium!

Corruption is a complex social, political, and economic phenomenon that affects all countries. Corruption undermines democratic institutions, slows economic development, and contributes to governmental instability.

The 2023 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) seeks to highlight the crucial link between anti-corruption and peace, security, and development. At its core is the notion that tackling this crime is the right and responsibility of everyone, and that only through cooperation and the involvement of each person and institution can overcome the negative impact of this crime.

The Belgian Embassy in Addis Abeba believes that preventing corruption, promoting transparency, and strengthening institutions are critical if the Sustainable Development Goals are to be met.

States, government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officers, media representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, the public and youth, alike, all have a role to play in uniting the world against corruption.

Every year, on the 1st of December, the world commemorates World AIDS Day.

People around the world unite to show support for people living with and affected by HIV and to remember those who lost their lives to AIDS.

With communities leading the way , the world can end AIDS. Organizations of communities living with, at risk of, or affected by HIV are the frontline of progress in the HIV response.

On this World AIDS Day, the Belgian Embassy in Addis Ababa would like to emphasize that the day is more than a celebration of community achievements; it is a call to action to enable and support communities in their leadership roles.
