On the 9th of September 2024, Apple announced that a software update on their AirPod Pro 2, will allow a “clinical grade” hearing aid mode for mild to moderate hearing loss; an over-the-counter hearing solution.
 
Of course, AirPods won’t be suitable for all types of hearing loss, but they’ll be a first step solution, an icebreaker towards making hearing health a more accessible reality on a global scale. It’ll allow people with milder hearing loss to hear better “when needed,” and my hope is that with these first-step hearing aids people will also realize the importance of having their hearing checked by a professional - The cost of untreated hearing problems can be devastating to memory and cognition, but also, the first signs of other related conditions like dementia, or rare diseases that first present with symptoms of hearing loss, could be diagnosed earlier.
 
So, as the Founder of Deafmetal, I needed to react on Apple’s news on the ’OTC pods’ for their safety. Style, but especially safety, is a function that we provide to all hearing device users. I didn’t even have to design a new jewelry holder for the AirPods: Our Holster for hearing aids fits directly to pods - as they also fit any other earphones or buds. So, with our existing Holster and jewelry, you can keep wireless pods safely attached to your ear while wearing them for music listening or hearing, jogging or just having them for hanging off your ears for a short, naked ear silent moment.

It was really cool to stumble onto 'Deafmetal' while reading a mainstream tech review on Apple's move into the OTC hearing aid market by SoundGuys 🙌🏻 (One of the last places we expected to find us, thanks guys!)

An over-the-counter hearing aid option like this move from Apple is a really helpful tool to address the gigantic portion of people who either don't realize they have hearing loss, or feel inhibited or unable to do anything about it. It's a part-time or 'situational tool' for milder loss, and it isn't going to have us trading in our pro hearing devices.

But, this announcement isn't just opening up the OTC market, it's driving conversations on stigma, accessibility, better understanding and, not least, personalizing your hearing aids on all sorts of unexpected platforms.

And we, of course, don't think any hearing device should have to look like a mass-produced factory preset...

“I’m Amy, I live in the UK. I’m a hard of hearing, spicy Leo who also pole dances and navigates raising two small humans.”

What's up with your ears?

"I have been hard of hearing for the last 8 years. I have a genetic condition called cookie bite hearing loss (mid- range hearing loss). It means I find it hard to hear middle frequencies. My hearing loss became noticeable with pregnancy and became worse with each child. I wear a hearing aid in each ear and have done for the last 5 years. It can make being out more challenging as background noise makes hearing a bit more tricky. Lucky (for some), I can lip read.”

What inspires you in others?

“People who think outside the box and aren’t afraid to be their authentic self. People who show their passion, kindness and positive energy! It rubs off on others and creates a better environment to be in. This is why I love Deafmetal! Whatever you do in life, just do it with all the above.You never know what life will throw at you. What's your own superpower?

“Communicating. I do love to talk! For me, this comes in so many formats - verbal, nonverbal, music, dance. Part of my job is to look at how people communicate - verbal and nonverbal - to help them, and I love it. I am always meeting new people as part of my jobs, so communication in any form is key.”

Just like a lizard that can drop and regrow its tail, we've created a new safety chain that instantly adjusts its length. It uses a sliding ball mechanism to move and lock the second jewelry clip in place. So, you can wear your chain tightly secured behind the ear (perfect for active lizard-ing) or lengthened to something a little more dangly (perfect for lazing about, or a night out).

What does Mia have?

Last year, we made customized Deafmetals for the newly crowned Miss South Africa, Mia Le Roux.

Using 'Prohibition' and 'Duifie' (a name that means little dove in her mother tongue), Jenni made asymmetrical sets to wear with asymmetrical ears.

Mia is profoundly deaf with a one-sided CI that was implanted when she was two, and, after two years of intense speech therapy, she said her first sentence at the age of four, "kyk daar, wit wolke," meaning, "look there, white clouds."

It put a huge smile on my face reading that. To think that two little doves (with an Afrikaans name) flew all the way from Finland to nestle on the ears of a girl who was born with her head in the clouds.

After all, that's where heads should be. That's where they keep the crowns.

Who are you?

“I’m Oona. I have cochlear implants in both ears, and I use the MED-EL Sonnet 2. I communicate in two native languages: Finnish Sign Language and spoken language.”

What's up with your ears?

“My ears and I are doing very well. I was born deaf (Connexin 26 gene mutation). I underwent cochlear implant surgeries when I was 3 and 9 years old. The best part is that I can freely choose when I want to listen and when I don’t.

But my deafness wasn’t noticed right away: it was only detected later when I was 1-2 years old. My parents wondered why I didn’t react to loud noises. As a child, I was social and followed others’ examples, which many people were surprised by. They didin’t believe I was deaf because they thought I could hear but couldn’t understand or produce speech.”

What inspires you in others?

“Courage and positive attitude. Also, I am inspired by people who show their hearing aids instead of hiding them, and even personalize their devices. Raising awareness about hearing impairment and advocacy work are also very close to my heart.”

What's your own superpower?

“I feel that my superpowers are my deafness, bilingualism and cochlear implants. And choosing when I want to listen and when I don’t.”

What symbol would you draw on your flag?

“If I were to design a flag related to hearing impairment, it would include symbols of hearing aids, bilingualism and equality.”

Styling Olympic torch bearers since 2014 🖤

Before Jenni got her hearing aids in 2018 and 'accidentally' created the first Deafmetals for her own personality-lacking aids, she was a stylist and accessories designer.

She's styled celebrities at the American Music Awards. Her creations have been worn at the Golden Globes and Oscars, and she's made one-of-kind pieces for some really wonderful personalities... like Uncle Snoop!

If you wonder where Snoop Dogg got that endearing nickname, it's from being a music industry peacemaker. He's like that "cool ass" uncle you call when you need advice or support, and he just manages to calmly settle any difference.

Who are you?

 I’m Emma, I’m an 18-year-old student with hearing loss. 

What's up with your ears?

Doctors noticed my hearing loss when I was 13. They couldn't find any reason for it, though. Getting a hearing aid was a big shock for me because I hadn’t even noticed that my hearing had declined. At first, I was ashamed of wearing hearing aids and I always wore my hair down to cover up my ears. Now, I have been using hearing aids for five years, and I can finally be proud of my erilaisuusesta (difference/ uniqueness).

What inspires you in others?

Positive energy and kindness. I appreciate people who are honest and helpful. I like people who say what they think rather than lying to get a better feeling.

What's your own superpower?

My superpower is maybe my positive energy. I’m always positive, and I’m always trying to see the good sides in everything. 

What symbol would you draw on your flag?

I would probably draw a heart because it describes love, kindness, and also happiness.

Finally in bloom! Meet Lida's Orchid and our creeping Orkidea 🖤

Lida's Orchid was created from a design competition held in Cape Town, with our South African distributor Southern ENT. Lida is the audiologist who was part of the team that implanted the very first CI in South Africa in 1986. She retires in 2024, after 38 years and 1000 implants, and Lida's Orchid is a celebration of her groundbreaking life's work.

The design represents, not only her love of these enduring blooms, but how much can grow from labors of love and compassion.

Orkidea was created as soon as Jenni held the flowers in her hands. They grew into curious creepers instead of a cascade, and bloomed a Finnish name.

Our 'first edition' harvest of these beautiful flowers is really small. The Orchids have a 6cm detachable safety chain that can attach to any of our fasteners for hearing aids, cochlear implants or BAHAs, while the Orkideas clip directly to the Deafmetal Holster around your hearing aid or CI.
