A WOWS fund raising campaign for KIDS with CANCER in Fiji
For the past three years, ‘Walk On Walk Strong’ (WOWS) has been operating as a fundraiser for The Tae Kami Foundation to support chi
ldren with cancer and raise community awareness of pediatric cancer in the Pacific. WOWS is the official Fiji committee of the Foundation. It works in partnership with the Fiji Cancer Society and in association with the Ministry of Health. This year 2012 WOWS is again inviting organisations and individuals to be part of its annual signature event, the Shave or Save (SOS) fundraising campaign. This is a unique and powerful way to contribute to a very worthy cause. We are particularly grateful to Nivea for Men for joining us this year as the main corporate sponsor of WOWS SOS. The Tae Kami Foundation
The aims of the Tae Kami Foundation are to fulfill the dreams of the late Tae Kami. As she lay dying, Tae asked her parents to commit themselves to a number of initiatives:
1. Setting up Resource Centres to support children with cancer and their families in Pacific Island countries.
2. Operate a Walk on Walk Strong Fund to support children with cancer and their families through their difficult journey with the disease.
3. Establish a scholarship fund for kids whose parents cannot afford school fees.
4. Build a hospital specifically for pediatric cancer (this maybe through a children’s facility in an existing hospital or a regional centre).
“Walk on Walk Strong” is the title of the song written and recorded by Tae as her message to all who are experiencing trouble and hardship. It provided the inspiration that led to the development of WOWS or Walk on Walk Strong campaigns that will help raise support at national and regional levels for children with cancer. WOWS Shave or Save: How it works
One of the more poignant images of cancer patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatment is their loss of hair. This adds a further layer of self consciousness and stress particularly in children. The Shave or Save campaign is the WOWS version of similar initiatives in a number of countries. It involves participants shaving their heads in solidarity with cancer sufferers, raising awareness of their plight and generating funds for support and treatment. The Shave or Save is designed to challenge people to be part of a community event with a very worthy and humane purpose. Remember that many children with cancer can live long, relatively healthy, productive lives, if they get the treatment they require in time. Individuals and organisations can participate in SOS. An organization can nominate a person from within their organisation to have his/her head shaved at a public event during the annual WOWS Walk on August 4, 2012. Staff of the organisation have to raise $1000 to “pay” for the haircut. (Ideally the volunteer could be a high profile person, but that does not have to be the case). The organisation is encouraged to match the staff’s contribution dollar for dollar to a total of $1000. More than one person in an organisation can be nominated. If the nominee wants to save their fine head of hair, they can match the $1000 that the group nominating them has raised to get a reprieve. If they successfully escape the trimming blade, they in turn can nominate someone else in the organisation to have their head shaved. Staff members are encouraged to attend the WOWS walk and cheer on their nominee at the shaving event, which will be conducted live-on-stage at the Vodafone Arena, by a volunteer team of professional barbers and hairdressers from some of Suva’s top spas & salons. We also welcome individuals and/or families who wish to raise their own funds to participate in SOS. We will provide Nomination forms and guidelines. We encourage organisations to join our efforts to help improve the lives of children with cancer in Fiji. If you would like to have a detailed presentation for your organisation, or if you wish to contribute in other ways, please contact the organisers through the contacts given above. All funds raised will be channelled directly into patient treatment and support. The benefits to your organisation
The intrinsic rewards of taking part in a truly satisfying activity are self-evident. Those who feel good about themselves are usually very productive. So the WOWS SOS is an ideal way for commercial organisations and staff social clubs to contribute to something to help children in need. The WOWS Save or Shave will be widely publicised on local media (radio & print) and through billboard advertising. A special feature of the 2012 WOWS fundraising will be a concert performance by the Vanuatu singing star Vanessa Quai Hoi. Your company will be publicly acknowledged for its contribution.
