Stéphane Gautier a adopté l’ours, à moins que ce ne soit l’inverse. Qui de l’animal ou de l’artiste a pris l’autre pour totem ? Le plasticien a entamé son voyage dans les terres universellesdu souvenir et de la mémoire avec pour guide la plus évidente, narrative et fantasmagoriquereprésentation de l’enfance : un ours. Bien qu’objet d’amour total, l’artiste a cependant voulu pousser « son expérience régressive via plantigrade » jusqu’au bout. Afin de s’assurer la totale empathie de son observateur, il n’a pas opté pour un ours ordinaire mais pour un ourson en gélatine alimentaire, élément conducteur universel de nos émotions infantiles... Alpha et oméga de toute la démarche. Avec ses fabuleux bonbons « Happy Bears » rassemblés parfois sous les mêmes bannières, transformés, relookés, génétiquement modifiés, logotisés voire brandés, l’artiste pénètre des espaces de réflexion de notre enfance en invoquant ses symboles et ensuggérant sa sacralisation. Ours refuge, ours miroir, ours carte postale, ours de Proust ou ours étendard, la petite friandise est devenu porte-drapeau de la créativité affutée, étincelante etsingulière d’un garçon de son temps.

The bear as a refuge, a mirror or a postcard, the bear of Proust or the bear as aparadigm, the little sweet has become the standard-bearer of the honed creativity, both brilliant and unique, of a boy of his time.
