HEALING FROM LOSS AND PREVENTING RISK of ALZHEIMERS & OTHER DISEASES LIKE PARKINSON’S, ALS and BREAST CANCER. This is my first article on FB in a long time yet it’s an important subject with what is going on the past few years.
Healing from the loss of my father 4 years ago after Covid started, I was no longer allowed to see my mom who had deteriorated quite rapidly with late onset of dementia/Alzheimers and Parkinson’s. At that time, she was privately sequestered from me as she no longer was the mother I knew and loved. Dealing with the loss on my own and other interfering factors like Covid, I took care of me working fulltime outside the home where I had the social support and physical/emotional excercise I needed while I healed. Four years ago this occurred and time is an excellent healer. It essentially lead me to go internally to heal, grow and connect with those who were like family and make new friends/acquaintances going through similar grief/losses. Excercise/ alone time was additionally healing to process and heal this loss. Working in social jobs by day meeting all types of people and connecting to a few friends/loved ones in my inner circle who experienced similar loss was a way of cathartically healing for me and working thru the challenge. Though certain immediate family/cousins and siblings were not there for me, it was the aid of real friends and loved ones at a distance and coworkers that served as my support system -not those who were only around me in good times, yet those who showed real friendship outside of social media. Time is the greatest healer of all and having photos of happy memories/family events of good times has kept me strong and healthy. Yet everyone handles grief differently. That is why it’s important to not take it personally and to respect the quiet solitude of those who have experienced a loss. Some friends I’ve met through work have had heavier family circumstances dealing with the grief/loss of someone close. For example, I recently lost a good friend who was like an older brother to me. He was a really good person, a private person, yet to heal, his family and the people who loved him all grieved and expressed themselves in very different ways. Some preferred new memories away from anything associated with that person ( as it was just too painful to see familiar places/faces associated with that person). For example, I could empathize with my friend that seeing me may remind her of losing him, as dealing with my mom the one time I saw her after my dad’s funeral she cried saying the things I was talking about reminded her of my dad and it upset her. She was stressed too that she couldn’t remember neighbors names or walk much. With her dementia diagnosed, I respected my eldest sister’s wishes and let her preserve my mom’s privacy and dignity as my mom had wanted. I only wish people in this Michigan community the past few years would have respected that as this experience had me empathizing with the intrusion that many of my celeb interviews in LA experienced and a few healing clients go through with stranger’s intrusion/probing and asking personal questions at inappropriate times.

During this process of grief, these are just a few examples of how people handle grief differently. Some prefer the social support of others while they grieve and others prefer to grieve alone. Some display their loved ones “ for show” with tubes up their nose as they are dying while others I know are more private and discreet respecting their loved ones wishes and privacy. This is one of the many reasons I am not on Facebook often to see this…Yet grief goes in cycles and with some families estranged and or experiencing trauma, they may feel they are alone yet they are not. That is when a good therapist is advised to work through the grief. Other times, a family members disease or health challenge is a lesson in self education and how to take preventative measures yourself to prevent the disease if possible.
For example, my friend who passed away was a young man and he had early onset Parkinson’s and Dementia like my mom developed late in life. However, my mom’s onset was rapidly triggered when my dad passed away four years ago. Roughly 1 in 10 men get Alzheimers or Dementia after the age of 45 whereas 1 in 5 woman get the disease and are doubly at risk. It is also statistically higher in Latino and African populations over White populations like my mom and friend who passed away. Therefore, this is everyone’s concern, especially in the United States where fast food/processed foods are most popular and where diets high in red meat, sweets, pastries and other processed meals like tv dinners loaded with sodium are often consumed and contribute to people’s cognitive decline. Eating fresh and clean, staying mentally and physically healthy in your lifestyle with minimum alcohol and zero to***co can dramatically help reverse or heal the starting stages of late onset dementia/Alzheimers. It can also ease symptoms in some ALS/Parkinson’s patients yet there is still much research going on to determine if other factors cause the disease. For now, early detection in a person genetically predisposed to carry this dreadful disease is a start.
Some of the tests/theories that cause dementia/Alzheimers range from pesticides like Paraquat found in Roundup and using aluminum foil to other environmental factors a person may experience early on, yet its more complicated than that depending on your genetics and your gender.
For example, some women with late Alzheimer’s who have had estrogen replacement post menopause after having kids is another area that is still being examined/tested theoretically by physicians as hormone replacement does not necessarily “ ward off” or help prevent it. A good way to determine if you carry the gene is to get tested by your physician. A test for ApoEs can reveal much about your genetic predisposition. For example, A person can have two EpoEs: they can carry EpoE2, EpoE3, or EpoE3 and EpoE4 - if you have one or two EPoE2s it can actually protect you and your brain from developing Alzheimer’s/dementia yet the risk gene associated with Alzheimers is carrying the EpoE4 gene which increases your risk of developing Alzheimer’s by 3-5 times. Though men and women carriers are quite different, it is good to test to see if you carry the gene ( especially after 50 years of age) as eating clean and cutting out these unhealthy practices and eating habits can not only reduce risk of late onset Alzheimer’s/dementia, it can also reduce the risk of other related diseases ( Parkinson’s / ALS, etc).It can also cut the risk of breast cancer in women. Healing to all and stay healthy 🙏✌🏻❤️☮️

I have not posted on here in over three years working fulltime in the food and retail industry. I am not working as a healer for several years with Pals closing as a nonprofit in 2018, yet enjoyed volunteering again reading /educating children with educators a few times a month at the start of 2023. Coming out of Covid, the libraries I’ve worked with in Los Angeles are supportive as are my employers and librarians the past few months in Michigan at Panera Bread until I can soon relocate to a home.
Coming out of lockdown, my approach to working with 3rd to 6th graders is quite different than it was in my early days when I initially started my story time with multicultural children. We ( the librarians and teachers in LA and France), who contributed to my two Pals children’s books authored after my decades of story time Wednesday and Thursday’s after my fulltime work is what made Pals books a success. And those cities and after school programs who included us yet who could not get us funding with budget cuts, we thank you too. All these co-educators couldn’t get Pals as a nonprofit funded, yet they believed in my volunteer story time and these books I co-authored with Al Margolis, Jean Louis Boyer and an amazing international crew of children , guests of all different cultures, developers, interns, web artists and volunteers. At the end of lockdown, the approach this year is quite different. Instead of focusing on reading and comprehension, I personally will be evaluating/observing and facilitating the children’s socialization and critical thinking skills to bring their own unique perspective to the table. A key factor needed in today’s world to broaden children’s understanding of their peers and to engage in active listening as well as dialogue while covering our chapter books. I may or may not have a book club in the future …yet it will have to be books I find that are morally uplifting and educator, parent and child approved. I’m always recommending/ discussing and how we need to assess them from a place/ref. point in history that may sting compared to the present time, yet must be learned/discussed and examined without erasing history.
Books take children places… though funding never came from anyone who lent a name or endorsement to Pals Around the World, I will personally give back with my time when I relocate. Not being able to have children with my path this lifetime, I paid for my program/books from my automotive career in Project Mgmt /International Management consulting yet I do not want or need to repeat this path. This entailed many working hours while achieving multiple degrees (three undergraduate, a Masters in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, multiple medicinal /healing/healthcare studies and certifications , including reinstatement of my Project Management degree in 2015 and selling my car to fund it so I had not a penny of student debt. These were from respected four year Universities and Colleges in person and part of “ my unique path” not YOUR path or YOUR lineage and you too will find what moves you/resonates with you personally, professionally and educationally…Whatever career you choose, choose wisely by checking in with yourself. Take the time and career tests to validate who you are and what via psychological testing you can find what your suited/interested in doing and than jump to the end result by interviewing /shadowing with those mentors in careers you’re personally suited for.. this will prevent you from spinning your wheels or wasting your time or money. It can help you know you, instead of following or trying to be someone else’s story /career track who you are not… finding your chosen career/educational path to make a strategy that works for you personally and professionally. Happy and healthy New Year and God bless you and your families! 🙏💗💕💗☮️😘
