The tenth Exposition Universelle was organised in Paris in 1889, from the 15th May to the 6th November, and it was for this occasion that the Eiffel Tower was built..
Attractions and celebrations overlooking Paris
Already festive,
the Eiffel Tower lit up every evening with the light of hundreds of gas lamps protected by opal glass cases. A tricolour beacon, housed in the campanile, sent out three signals of blue, white, and red light over Paris (using two mobile projectors mounted on a circular rail at the top). Lastly, the opening and closing of the Exposition were announced every day by a cannon shot fired from the top under the direction of a certain Mr. Chobert, the "harquebusier" of Paris, in his capacity as "qualified associate and medal-holder at the Exposition Universelle".
All sorts of boutiques (sale of souvenirs, photographersâ booths, binocular rental, refreshments) and restaurants opened up on the monument.

Eiffel built hundreds of metal structures of all kinds, all around the world.
Bridges, and in particular railway bridges, were his favourite field of work, but he also won renown for his metal structural work and industrial installations.
His career was marked by a large number of fine buildings, among which two of the most outstanding are the twin edifices of the Porto viaduct and the Garabit viaduct in the Cantal region of France.
Equally outstanding are certain other structures in which the pure inventiveness of Eiffel's company was allowed free rein, such as the "portable" bridges sold around the world in "kits", the ingenious structure of the Statue of Liberty in New York, and of course the Eiffel Tower itself.

The already famous Pont des Arts is once again in the spotlight since the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. Now nicknamed Aya's Bridge, this Parisian landmark is sure to be the talk of the town, especially as crowds are now flocking to imitate her performance on the bridge.
Located between the Louvre and theInstitut de France, the Pont des Arts is an iconic Paris landmark. Built between 1802 and 1804, it was the capital's first metal bridge.
The bridge was commissioned by Napoleon to equip the capital with a new technology: cast iron. It owes its name to the Palais des Arts, the name given to the Louvre when it was converted into a museum during the Revolution. The Pont des Arts was listed as a historic monument in 1975.

TOWER OBSERVATION POINTS
There are number of sites around Paris that offer exceptional views of the Tower. We consider three of them must-see spots for the best possible souvenir of the Iron Lady.
Closest to the Tower is the Champ de Mars, where you can relax and stroll through the vast park. On the Palais de Chaillot side, the TrocadĂ©ro terraces also offer a stunning panorama of the Tower in its entirety. For an unobstructed view with the Seine in the foreground, visit Bir-Hakeim Bridge, where youâll also find the Renaissance France statue.

Aerodynamic studies
On the day after the Towerâs very inauguration, Gustave Eiffel installed a meteorology laboratory on the 3rd floor.
He also had a passion for aerodynamics and carried out a series of observations on gravity (leading to the installation from 1903 to 1905 of gravity instruments).
He imagined âan automatic system that would slide along the length of a cable stretched between the Towerâs 2nd floor and the ground.â
He had a wind tunnel built at the foot of the Tower, and from the month of August 1909 to December 1911, he carried out five thousand trials. Additionally, Gustave Eiffel encouraged numerous scientific experiments on the Tower: Foucaultâs Pendulum, the mercury pressure gauge, physiological studies and radio contact (1898). In the end, it was to be the Tower's role as an enormous antenna that would save it from destruction.

The elevators at the time of constructionđ
Between the ground floor and the second floor: The four pillars were equipped with one or two cabins.
In June 1889, five hydraulic elevators went into operation. This initial elevator technology was further modernized a decade later by Gustave Eiffel for the Universal Exposition of 1900.
Between the the second and third floor: An "Edoux" elevator was put into service, a hydraulic machine that was the only one of its type in the world, with jacks 80 meters long. (It was dismounted in 1983).
North and South pillars : "Otis" elevators carried the visitors up and down until dismounted in 1910.
East and West pillars: "Roux-Combaluzier" elevators were in service until 1897. "Fives-Lille" hydraulic elevators were installed in 1899, modernized in 1986 and 1987, and revised in 1992, 1995 and 2005.
In 2008, the major project of totally replacing the West pillar elevators began, with the intention of coming back to the original and simple functioning machines imagined by Gustave Eiffel in collaboration with the Fives-Lille company in 1899.

Letâs look beyond the Eiffel Tower, and discover the Gustave Eiffelâs most surprising, little-known works and inventions.
According to ADGE (Association of the Descendants of Gustave Eiffel), Gustave Eiffel built over 500 works in 59 years, in 30 countries, on 5 continents!
In 1864, Gustave Eiffel started to work independently and created his own company, Gustave Eiffel et Compagnie, based in Levallois-Perret. The Eiffel workshops specialized in metal bridges and viaducts, iron piles and frames, port towers and lighthouses, railways, cranes and lifting equipment.

THE STRUCTURE FOR THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
Built in 1881 for the statue designed by Auguste Bartholdi, this iron frame is 151 feet high. It is one of the Eiffel workshopsâ most ingenious creations. It is literally designed like a bridge pile to resist the wind, with a secondary trellis structure added to serve as a support to attach the outer sheets of copper. And indeed, it has successfully resisted the storms and hurricanes that have swept New York since 1886.

The Towerâs shape represents a garter belt or the letter âAâ
Some have suggested that Gustave Eiffel was in love with a woman whose name began with the letter "A" and that he gave the tower its shape in her honor, or that the designing engineer wanted to depict an upside-down garter belt. Romantic as they may be, these interpretations are not true.
The only things they considered when giving the Eiffel Tower itâs shape had to do with ensuring minimal wind resistance, for the best possible stability

The Tower sits on hydraulic jacks, or directly in the Seine river
How can a 1083 feet high tower weighing over 10,000 tons stand upright?
Many of the legends seek to answer this question. The first answer would have us believe that the Tower sits on hydraulic jacks that allow it to bend in strong winds and rain. These jacks did exist, but they were a temporary arrangement while the pillars and first floor were being built.
Furthermore, the Tower does not have its feet in the water, as other people often claim. In fact, it rests on masonry foundations that are anchored in dry ground, and have no contact with the Seine.

Where can you see the best views of the Tower lit up?â„ïž
Our number-one advice is to visit the Eiffel Tower in the evening. You will enjoy an exceptional experience in a unique atmosphere, bathed in the monumentâs golden lighting, particularly in the stairs. To make the most of the sparkles, head to the second floor and look up, admiring the sparkling spire of the monument. A magical atmosphere captivates the entire Tower. Youâll lose yourself in the collective excitement created by the lights! And if the beacon intrigues you, head to the top to discover how it works, once again by simply looking up.
If youâre not at the Tower, the advantage is that you can see the Tower lit up from many places in Paris and the Paris region! TrocadĂ©ro esplanade and Champ de Mars remain unbeatable spots to watch the show of the Eiffel Tower lights turning on at night.

Getting around the esplanade
To take a lift, head to the EAST or WEST pillars of the Tower.
Visitors with tickets should join the queues with a green flag for direct access to the legâs entrance. Visitors without tickets should join the queues for the ticket office (yellow flag).
Ticket offices are generally open at both pillars.
Visitors wishing to take the stairs should head for the SOUTH pillar, where they can buy tickets for the stairs up to the 2nd floor, or stair + lift tickets to the top (blue flag).

Getting to the esplanade Eiffel Towerâs
There are two entrances in the gardens to reach the Eiffel Towerâs esplanade: the entrance 1 (South) and the entrance 2 (East). You will pass through the first security checks at these entrances, and they also give you a chance to explore the recently landscaped gardens.
Tip: to save some time, please prefer the entrance 2 (East) in the gardens, which is often less crowded.

The metal from the Eiffel Tower set in the Olympic and Paralympic medals is derived from parts of the monumentâs structure removed during renovation works during the 20th century.
It is called puddle iron, an almost pure form of iron with excess carbon removed through a process known as puddling, and was produced by the Pompey forges and blast furnaces in Lorraine.
A 0.6 oz piece of puddle iron is set in the center of each medal, in its natural color and reshaped into a hexagon, a geometric form which represents France.
At the heart of the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics
With the installation of the Olympic rings, the Eiffel Tower has become an even more integral part of the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics: it is included in the Olympic and Paralympic medals, on the podium design, in the opening ceremony, and is also located at the intersection between certain stadiums and essential Olympic sites (Parc des Champions, Champ de Mars Arena, IĂ©na Bridge).
Itâs even on currency: from June 2024, the Tower will be displayed on 24 million commemorative âŹ2 coins, released into circulation by the Paris Mint.
Come and admire it decorated with the Olympic rings, in color during the day and lit up in white at night!
95 feet wide and 43 feet high, the Olympic rings were designed and made by the company ArcelorMittal.
The operation to install the rings was a true feat of technical prowess at over 200 feet off the ground. It involved months of meticulous preparation with SociĂ©tĂ© dâExploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE).
In collaboration with the experts from ArcelorMittal France, Paris 2024 undertook all the feasibility studies required to ensure safety and preserve the monument: placement on the structure, attachment points, weight distribution, etc.
The entire operation was supervised and validated by the competent inspection authorities (technical experts and inspection body).
The final operation required immense precision, using spectacular cranes - two 500-tonne cranes and two 100-tonne cranes - to lift and attach the rings between the first and second floors. It took place during the night between June 6 and 7, 2024.
