Hearing aid feedback occurs when sound that was supposed to go into your ear canal leaves your ear and jumps back into the hearing aid microphone. The sound then gets reamplified, and this causes your hearing aids to whistle.
Here's 5 reasons why your hearing aid might be whistling:
1.Poor fit
2. Volume too high
3. Broken tubing
4. Too much ear wax
5. Dislodged mircophones
If you're experiencing excessive whistling/feedback with your hearing aid it's always best to get it checked by your audiologist - usually the problem is solved easily!

Here's some tips on how to make the most of your travels with a hearing loss.

Before your trip ask your audiologist to make sure your hearing aids are prepared for the trip. While you're at it, ask about any assistive listening devices they might recommend. If you're going for a big opera experience, an FM system could improve your experience vastly

When you're packing, include extra batteries (or charger) and tubing, cleaning kit and travel case. If you're flying, bring them as carry-on in case your luggage gets misplaced. Going someplace hot or humid? Remember a dehumidifier.
During your trip have your printed reservations and tickets ready (or have them on your phone). This makes it easier to show them to airport staff for a smooth check-in.

Keep your hearing aids on, so that you don't miss important information. But do tell the staff or people around you about your hearing loss - this will make it much easier for them to help you not miss out on any important travel information.

Inform the front desk of your hotel about your hearing loss, so they know in case of emergency.

Get a map on your phone or a printed one. If you have a hard time hearing, it will be harder to understand directions if you get lost or can't find what you're looking for. A map makes it much easier!

If your ears feel clogged, there could be different underlying reasons – and different ways of getting rid of the clogging.
When your ears are clogged sound becomes muffled, just like it sometimes does when your plane takes off, or when you get water in your ears.

But if the sensation persists, it may not just be that plane ride or the trip to the public pool that blocked your ears.

There’s also a big difference between the kind of clogged ears that hurt and the kind that don’t hurt.

How do your ears feel?
If your ears feel clogged and it hurts then you could have an ear infection.

Ear infections are very common and can be caused by many things, including sinus infections, excess mucus, allergies, and even smoking.

Clogged ears from a mild ear infection usually last one or two weeks. If the problems are in the inner ear, this could last longer.

Mild ear infections clear up by themselves, and you can alleviate the pain with painkillers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, ear drops, or simply by applying a warm cloth to your ear.

If the pain and the clogging don’t stop after one or two weeks, you should go see your doctor.

Some more serious inner-ear infections could potentially (in rare cases) be followed by meningitis, a ruptured ear drum, or hearing loss.

If you ears feel clogged but they don't hurt then there’s a good chance you may have excess earwax.

Earwax essentially protects our ears from dirt and bacteria and makes sure that these things can’t get through the ear canal and harm our eardrums.

But if you have too much earwax, it could cause symptoms of an infection, tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo or a cough.

People produce different amounts of earwax for different reasons. For instance, for some people, swimming has been known to cause a higher production of earwax .

Hearing aids or earplugs tend to prevent earwax from falling out of the ear and could also cause a blockage.
So if you happen to produce a lot of wax, or you wear hearing aids or use earplugs a lot, make sure you get your ears cleaned once in a while.

We know it’s tempting to grab a cotton swab or the corner of your towel, but please don’t - this could just make it worse.

If you have clogged ears, the best solution is to get them checked by a doctor or a healthcare professional.

At Aberdeen Hearing Services we will check your ears for wax and can usually perform wax removal on the day if required!

Our free online hearing test is now available on our website!

Click this link to start now! https://hearing-screener.beyondhearing.org/TcjkZX/welcome

You will need a pair of headphones or earphones to do the test and it only takes a few minutes - while it doesn't replace a professional hearing test performed by an audiologist it can give you a rough idea of how your hearing is.

Hearing isn’t just about your ears – our brains play a big part in how we process and understand sound. Dr. Timothy Steele of Associated Audiologists explains the connection between hearing and understanding and how hearing aids can play a crucial role in this process for many people.

The effort required to hear a sound compared to the effort required to process it is exponential.

Difficulty understanding speech occurs even for people with “normal” hearing. If someone is concentrating on another activity, the brain may be too occupied in one area to assign meaning to the sounds we hear.

If someone has hearing loss caused by inner ear damage, or if the brain has particular difficulty processing sound, speech becomes even more difficult to comprehend.

This is where our audiologists at Aberdeen Hearing Services can help. In a soundproof room our audiologist, among other things, will assess your ability to recognize sounds and understand words presented with a comfortable volume. Following this hearing evaluation we will review your hearing aid options and answer any questions you may have.

If you'd like to make an appointment or if you would like to talk to one of our audiologists you can give us a call on 01224 637255 or send us a message.
