I attended our regional Public Health Annual Event titled 'Politics and Prejudice'. Yes, you heard me clearly. Why Politics in a public health event?



Our health is determined by where we live, grow, work and play and everything in between which these are largely politically driven. In other words, the building blocks of our health are politically influenced and decisions to improve them are political.

Today made it 11 years when I swore the oath of becoming a medical doctor not knowing what life will bring but holding unto God who knows the future.

I had weird dreams of what I would have become by now but God also had His own plan and following His steps can be very uncomfortable but there's peace and contentment in doing so.

Where will I be in 11 years time? I have stopped worrying about that and totally trusting in God to take the lead. He sure knows the plans He has for me, so I rest easy because He is an extraordinary master planner.

I recently participated in the 6th Joint National Conference of Christian Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria in Abuja, Nigeria. This in my opinion saw the largest gathering of Medical Doctors and Students as well as the spouses of these Christian professionals.

One of my light bulb moments from this awesome conference was reconnecting with my colleagues are are doing many great stuffs in Nigeria. One of which is Dr Oluchi Okafor Ugwunne. As I was hurrying to join one of the sessions, she called me from behind and handed over this book to me and said, 'this is your own copy' and I am the author.

In my usual believe of there's no free food anywhere even in free town, I asked how much is this fine book? And she goes, it is sold at N500 but I am giving it to you at no cost. I thanked her and went back to my hotel to devour this piece. My eyes were glued on this book and I couldn't stop reading because of how interesting and relatable the contents of the book was.

Penetrating the job market abroad can be very difficult due to not having local experience.

It was a hot afternoon in a busy emergency department of the oldest mission hospitals in Nigeria when I first sighted this asampete (ask for an interpreter if you don't know what that word means).

The only thing I can remember after that was the wow sound I made that attracted the nurse colleague who was working with me that afternoon.

The nurse goes:
Dr Kalu it seems like you like this babe o. Do you want me to arrange a meeting for you to meet her?

I shyingly (if there's anything like that in the dictionary) said no with a capital NO. The truth though was that at the moment, I had already fallen in Love with this total stranger but was not sure how best to proceed. At this point, me that previously didn't believe in love at first sight became an instant victim (who wouldn't? nwa ahu mara mma nke ukwu)

So, God decided to help my destiny by divinely orchestrating a series of meetings where we came in contact with each other (don't ask me how He did it. Lol). But one thing led to another and we became friends. The whole friendship became sweeter, then we decided to move the ministry to a permanent site.

That woman has now added another year to her life today and I am so blessed to call her my wife.

You have to pass 5 difficult professional exams to graduate as a medical doctor in Nigeria. One of these is arguably the most critical because your outcome in it determines whether you progress into higher classes or are withdrawn. In my opinion, the most critical of all is the 2nd professional exam which takes you from basic to clinical medicine classes. This writing is not about undergraduate medical exams though.

Permit me to celebrate Dr Osinachi Ukpai whose birthday is today who was all there for me during this destiny deciding 2nd professional exam. He became everything to me - room mate, chef, laundry man etc.

Dr Osinachi further became family afterwards and climaxed to becoming my bestman during my wedding. He is in short a great man.
